Bruce Springsteen Tribute Band to Perform at Farnsworth Park

The Rising Bruce Springsteen Tribute Band is performing a free concert at Farnsworth Park Saturday September 10 at 7:00 p.m. Farnsworth Park is located at the top of Lake Avenue at 568 E. Mount Curve Ave. As the lights go down, and seven silhouettes take the stage to calls of “Bruuuuce”; when the stage ignites in light and sound and you are swept up in one of the undeniable hit songs from one of rock’s greatest artist; you will witness the embodiment of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, and the “spiritual healing”, that can only be supplied by a great rock n roll band, and that band is The Rising.

The Rising is a brotherhood of friends, some with ties that date back nearly two decades. Much like Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, they take the stage more like a gang, than a band. They collectively roll up their sleeves and go to work, night, after night. They were all cut from the worn denim of blue collar towns,

The Altadena Library Card – Your Access to Inspiration, Information, Education and Entertainment

Today’s libraries are about more than books. They are creative educational spaces for learners from birth to high school and beyond. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Altadena Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all – a free library card.

Librarians provide important resources to families whose children are at the earliest stages of development, by teaching parents and caregivers the components of early literacy which help children develop the basic tools for school readiness. As of 2010, libraries in the United States offered more than 2.3 million children’s programs, which account for nearly two thirds of all library programming.

Older students can access high-speed Internet, digital tools and the opportunity to work with trained professionals on how to use them. Libraries also provide equity of access to digital tools and media, which has become increasingly important in high-poverty areas where students are less likely to have a computer or internet access in the home.

Altadena’s Crime Blotter for the Week of Saturday, August 27th

Sunday, August 21st

3:13 AM – A commercial burglary occurred in the 2300 block of E. Washington Boulevard. Suspects described as a male White, 16 – 20 years old and a male Black, 16 – 20 years old. Suspects entered the location by shattering the front door. Stolen: cash register and currency.
5:16 PM – A vehicle was reported stolen from the 2400 block of Olive Avenue. The vehicle was recovered in the immediate area after reports were made of a traffic collision. The driver of the stolen vehicle was not located.

Monday, August 22nd

12:43 AM – A fire occurred in the area of Mount Curve Avenue and Marengo Avenue. A motorhome was damaged by fire as a result of an electrical malfunction. No injuries.
5:08 PM – David Alcorn, 51 years old of Pasadena was arrested in the area of Maiden Lane and Morada Place for possession of a controlled substance.

Cal State Los Angeles Chemistry Professor, Local Resident Recognized as Minority Access National Role Model

Cal State LA Chemistry Professor Krishna Foster is set to be honored as a Minority Access National Role Model in recognition of her exemplary achievements in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Foster will be acknowledged during the Minority Access Inc.’s 17th Annual National Role Models Conference, which is scheduled to be held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC.

“I am truly humbled and honored by this award, which acknowledges the effort I have invested in realizing inclusive excellence in STEM for Cal State LA students,” said Foster, who resides in Altadena.

The National Role Model Awards identify leaders in various disciplines who can inspire others to succeed and increase the pool of scholars and professionals who will find cures for illnesses, solve technological problems, or address social disparities in society.

Foster’s work to ensure student excellence in chemistry serves as an example for other professors. She has a distinguished record as a scholar with numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national conferences.

Map Your Neighborhood Disaster Preparedness Training to be Held at Altadena Country Club

The community is invited to attend the upcoming neighborhood disaster training on Sunday, September 11, 2016 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Altadena Town & Country Club (2290 Country Club Drive, Altadena) hosted by Altadena MYN Committee. Emergency personnel nationwide are encouraging all citizens to evaluate their disaster supplies and level of preparedness now! They have rolled out a local training called MYN – Map Your Neighborhood. The training is informative and will provide locally relevant information and basic disaster planning goals beneficial to everyone!

A Disaster (opposed to an emergency) is a situation in which 911 is overwhelmed and unable to answer or respond to calls for help. In such a situation, individuals and neighborhoods need to be prepared and able to help themselves and each other medically and mentally for a length of time – possibly two weeks. Do you have enough water, food and medical supplies for your family and pets? Do you know the resources (skills and inventory) in your neighborhood?

Over Two Dozen Rescuers Retrieve Injured Hiker Who Fell “Over the Edge” Off Shortcut into Poison Ivy

A 51-year-woman required a helicopter rescue after a hiking accident Sunday night in the Inspiration Point area of the Los Angeles National Forest. There has been a significant rise in rescues like this one over the past few years.

The woman, who had fallen in poison oak leaves after taking an off-trail shortcut, was heard crying for help by another hiker who contacted authorities around 8:20 p.m., according to Dan Paige, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy who is a part of Altadena’s Mountain Rescue Team, a volunteer group that helps save hikers in danger.

“We lowered a paramedic down within 30 minutes of the call to who we thought was the victim. We found someone yelling and waving at us with a flashlight, but ended up actually being the informant,” Paige said. “We could still hear the victim screaming out there, but didn’t know where she was. After about an hour and a half, we spotted her. She was in a very precarious spot, about 100 feet over the side of the trail.”

A paramedic then hoisted her out via a helicopter and they started treating her for various injuries.

Monday, August 15th

12:00 AM – A theft from an unlocked vehicle occurred in the 2600 block of Lake Avenue. Stolen: black Tom Tom, brown Michael Kors sunglass case and brown Michael Kors sunglasses.
5:02 AM – Pedro Orozco, 22 years old of Altadena was arrested in the area of Figueroa Drive and Olive Avenue for robbery. Suspect Orozco was armed with a knife.
12:47 PM – A battery occurred in the 2200 block of Fair Oaks Avenue. Suspect described as a black female, 25 – 30 years old, between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 5 inches. The suspect was last seen entering a grey Jeep Cherokee being drive by a black male.

5:00 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 3400 block of Chaney Trail. Suspect(s) entered the location via the garage door by using bodily force. Stolen: weed wacker, grinding machine and a welding torch.

$20,000 Reward Offered to Help Find Killer Who Gunned Down A 4-year old Boy in Altadena Last Month

L.A. County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau investigators made a public plea Thursday in front of the house on the 300 block of West Figueroa Dr. in Altadena where Salvador Esperanza III was killed, asking for help in locating the suspects who fatally shot and killed the 4 year old boy in the front yard. A $20,000 reward has been offered in exchange for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the suspect responsible.

“We don’t have much of a description right now. That night, there were quite a few people on the street so we were told that a few people saw what happened, just no one has come forward to help identify that individual,” explained L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. Homicide Detective Lt. John Corina.

Four year old Salvador Esperanza III of Monrovia was with his parents on July 5 visiting a friend’s home on the corner of Olive and Figueroa in Altadena when and unknown suspect fired numerous rounds in the direction of the house killing Esparza and injuring a 27 year old black male,

Altadena Library Board Position Vacancy

With the resignation of Trustee Meredith McKenzie, the Altadena Library Board of Trustees is accepting letters of interest from anyone who would like to serve on the board for her unexpired 2016/2017 term. Those applying must be at least 18, a resident of and registered to vote in Altadena. The board will interview potential candidates at the next board meeting at 5 pm on September 26. The applicant selected must agree to be willing to run in the 2017 election for the 4-year term for this seat which expires in 2021.

Interested parties should submit a letter of interest, resume, and completed supplemental questionnaire (on library’s website) to the Library Director by 5 pm on Friday, September 16, 2016.
