Art on Palm Announces Spring Show

For one day only, artists and makers will exhibit work at Art on Palm, Saturday, June 18, 2016; 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in Altadena’s secluded and storied Wildwood Park, at 1421 E. Palm Street, Altadena.

The juried show and sale features work in ceramics, collage, glass, leather, metals, mixed media, photography, print making, textiles, watercolors, and woodworking. The participating artists will be announced on April 4, 2016. In addition to distinct work, the event is dog and child-friendly and showcases the folk-rock band, BULLFISH.

Art on Palm takes place under towering oaks and along the drives and paths of two homes, one renovated by and the other designed by Henry Greene in a local canyon known as Wildwood Park. Once part of a hunting lodge, Wildwood holds a stone amphitheater, outbuildings, and an old growth forest with one that is at least 650 years young – one of the oldest in the San Gabriel Valley.

Coffee with a Cop in Altadena Tuesday Gives You Chance to Chat About Community Issues

CHP Altadena is sponsoring Coffee with a Cop this Tuesday, March 22 at the Coffee Gallery, 2029 N. Lake Avenue in Altadena.

Coffee with a Cop is an opportunity for law enforcement to discuss issues related to peace and order with the community.

During past Coffee events, issues discussed include how to start the Neighborhood Watch Program. This time, recent crime trends and how to safeguard your property will be discussed, as well as the impact of film companies on neighborhoods.

Deputies from the Altadena Sheriff’s Station will be side by side with CHP to answer any questions about policing the community, crime trends and prevention.

Community members are encouraged to stop by for coffee or just to say hello.

Coffee with a Cop is from 6 to 10 a.m.

6:30 AM – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 2300 block of N. Altadena Drive. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle via unknown means. Stolen: black Dell laptop, black leather bag, notary stamp, black nylon computer bag, miscellaneous keys.
7:45 AM – An assault with a deadly weapon (plastic sign) occurred at Five Acres, 760 W. Mountain View Street. Suspect was taken into custody.

Altadena Public Library Continues Second Saturday Series with Verdugo Swing Society in the Main Library

Saturday, April 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the Reading Court of the Main library, the Altadena Library District will continue its Second Saturday Series with the Verdugo Swing Society.

The Verdugo Swing Society has been bringing back Big Band memories since 1986. Originally formed by members of the Glendale College Jazz band we now have local musicians from Aerospace to Academia.

In 1988 VSS was named the official band of the City of Glendale and has played a concert and dance series for the city every summer since.

June of 1992 saw the band play as ambassadors at the Seville Expo in Seville Spain.

The Verdugo Swing Society plays for City, Church, School, Charitable and Veterans organizations and has played over 500 such benefit shows.

Decadent desserts will be available from Sweeter than Honey, The Altadena Ale & Wine House will be pouring from its excellent selection of craft ale & fine wines, and El Patron will be serving up dishes hot off the grill.

Altadena Heritage: Historic Preservation 101

Can You Benefit From L.A. County’s New Historic Preservation Ordinance and the Mills Act Program?

Altadena Heritage’s March “Third Thursday” presentation features a panel of experts who will inform us about the recently adopted Los Angeles County Historic Preservation Ordinance and the Mills Act, which grants property tax reductions to certain qualified historic properties. (One example is Altadena’s Woodbury house, pictured above, built in 1883.)

Join Altadena Heritage on Thursday, March 17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Altadena Community Center (730 East Altadena Drive) to hear insights from:

Tim Gregory, an architectural historian (“The Building Biographer”) and a founding Altadena Heritage board member who was involved in initiating the community-wide historic architectural survey that became the foundation for AH’s architectural database, and;

Phillip Estes, a principal planner with the L.A. County Department of Regional Planning who leads community planning efforts in unincorporated areas, including the successful implementation of the County’s first-ever Historic Preservation Ordinance and Mills Act;

Cameron Turner, Writer, Journalist, Public Speaker and Mentor, Dies

Cameron Turner, well-known Altadena-based writer, journalist, broadcaster, and public speaker, has passed away.

A John Muir High School alumnus, Turner graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Communications degree, and went on to work with print, radio and television outlets in the greater Los Angeles area.

As a journalist, Turner wrote news, feature articles and opinion pieces for Pasadena Now and a variety of other print and online media including Top Agent, the Pasadena Journal, EURWeb.com and TheFix.com.

Turner was a commentator and news panelist on NBC 4 and wrote scripts and hosted radio programs for DMI Music and Media Solutions. He was a well-known public speaker and served as keynote speaker, master of ceremonies, and panel moderator for several community organizations, civil agencies, schools and churches.

Turner also did a lot of volunteer work with the John Muir Alumni Association. From October 2013 up to his untimely death, Turner served as media specialist and mentoring programs coordinator for John Muir’s Mentoring and Partnership for Youth Development (MPYD).

Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries

As residents prepare to change their clocks on Sunday, March 13, for daylight saving time, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reminds everyone to change the batteries in every smoke and carbon monoxide detector in their homes.

When properly installed, working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors can mean the difference between life and death.

“A working smoke detector in your home greatly increases your chances of survival during a fire,” says Fire Captain Keith Mora. “The device can alert sleeping family members and provide them with critical seconds to escape.”

Carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal; symptoms include severe headache, dizziness, mental confusion, nausea and fainting.

California law requires the installation of carbon monoxide detectors outside of each sleeping area in a home. For maximum protection against carbon monoxide gas, the Los Angeles County Fire Department also recommends installing a carbon monoxide detector inside each bedroom.

Sunday, February 28th

1:15 AM – Julius Johnson, 29 years old of Altadena was arrested in the 2100 block of N. Lincoln Avenue for battery.
10:00 AM – A residential burglary occurred in the 3300 block of Bellaire Drive. The suspect(s) entered the residence by cutting the window screen. The suspect(s) also vandalized the victim’s vehicle by shattering the window. Stolen: black Sentry safe, credit cards, currency.

Monday, February 29th

12:30 PM – A burglary occurred at Healing Arts Center, 1911 N. Lake Avenue. The suspect(s) entered the garage by cutting the padlock. Stolen: teal green Leander chiropractor table bed, duffle bags containing yoga equipment.

Tuesday, March 1st

3:30 AM – An arson occurred in the 2100 block of Marengo Avenue. The suspect(s) threw a Molotov cocktail igniting a flowerbed located to the front of a residence. No major damage.
11:38 PM – Luis Rebollar, 25 years old of Alhambra was arrested in the 300 block of Acacia Street for ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

Altadena Public Library Presents Teen Program: “Making the Most of Your College Visits” with Ashley Sim

Monday, April 11th at 7:00 p.m. in the Barbara J. Pearson Community Room of the Main Library.

Visiting colleges effectively before applying to them is essential for success in the admissions process. Please come join Ashley Sim, former admissions officer for Caltech, as she explains how to get the most out of your college visits. She will discuss how the college visit fits into the admissions process, the types of visit opportunities offered by colleges, and how you should go about conducting them.

This free college counseling workshop is the third one in a series being offered by the Altadena Library District this school year as part of its teen programming. “Altadena Library is excited to host Ashley Sim’s workshop. We are committed to providing free, informative programs that prepare community teens and their parents for their college journey.” – Teen Librarian Carrie Wilson
