Snow Closes Mountain Roads

Two mountain highways were closed Monday morning due to snow at higher elevations.

The unplanned road closures were initiated at 7:30 a.m. and will continue while snow and
ice conditions persist.

The closed roads are:

Angeles Forest Highway, between Aliso Canyon Road and Angeles Crest Highway/SR2.
Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road, between Angeles Forest Highway and Angeles Crest Highway/SR2.

Other roads could potentially be closed due to current winter weather conditions.

Alleged Woman Gang Member Caught with Loaded .357 Caliber Handgun

Pasadena Police officers arrested an 18-year-old female alleged gang member Thursday night after she was reportedly found with a loaded .357 caliber revolver at her feet while inside a car in Altadena.

Police Lt. John Mercado said the suspect was identified as Leilani Washington, a Pasadena resident and alleged member of the Pasadena Denver Lanes, a local gang.

Mercado said Washington was arrested at a traffic stop near the 700 block of New York Drive in Altadena at about 6:40 p.m.

“Officers conducted a traffic stop … she was a passenger of the car,” Mercado said. “When they [the officers]  walked up on the car, they saw in plain view the revolver lying on the floorboard at Washington’s feet. She was arrested without incident and taken to jail.”

The Pasadena Denver Lanes, with numbers ranging around 300 to 400 members, is considered a spin-off of the Los Angeles Denver Lanes gang.

The gang has also expanded into parts of Altadena under the acronym ADL,

Altadena’s Crime Blotter for the Week of Saturday, February 27th

Sunday, February 21st

12:08 AM – Domingo Nieves, 62 years old of Pasadena was arrested in the area of Lake Avenue and Washington Boulevard for possession of a controlled substance.
3:31 PM – Kevin Eldridge, 53 years old of La Puente was arrested in the 200 block of Altadena Drive for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
8:45 PM – A shooting at an inhabited dwelling occurred in the 2100 block of N. Lake Avenue. No injuries.

Monday, February 22nd

12:05 AM – A residential vandalism occurred in the 300 block of E. Sacramento Street. The suspect(s) shattered the living room window.
6:03 AM – An armed robbery occurred at Arco AM/PM, 1880 N. Lake Avenue. The suspect was described as a male, Black, 508-510, 170-180, wearing a black mask, black hooded sweatshirt, and black pants. The suspect proceeded to the rear of the counter, opened the register and demanded more money. The suspect fled then fled the location.

Altadena Public Library Presents Free 3D Printing Workshop for Teens

Beginning Friday, April 1st at 4:00 p.m. at the Main Library. Teens are encouraged to register for Altadena Library’s first free workshop to learn the basics of 3-D printing. Experience is not required. This workshop is designed for beginners, but more advanced users are welcomed as well. Registration begins March 7th and closes March 25th. Attendance on April 1st is mandatory to participate in April 2nd and April 8th workshops. The workshops are for teens ages 12-19.

At the first workshop, teens will be introduced to 3D printing technology. Altadena Library has just acquired a 5th generation Makerbot and 2 Makerbot minis, and workshop participants will be able to select and print designs from Thingiverse, where 3D designs are shared with the community. Participants will learn to design their own 3D objects with 123D Design,

Mountain Rescue Today Continues Record Streak

Altadena Mountain Rescue Team members, joined by the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, rescued a 32-year-old man who was stuck in Coyote Canyon Tuesday morning, adding another incident to the record number of seven rescues the team has conducted since February 21, 2016.

The man was visiting from Michigan, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Paige said.

“At about 8 a.m., the Sierra Madre Police Department was notified of a hiker stranded in Coyote Canyon, on top of a dried-up waterfall,” Paige said. “The Sierra Madre Police notified us.”

Both the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue and Altadena Mountain Rescue Team were activated.

Paige said it took them several hours searching at the canyon before locating the stranded man.

Rescuers reached him and lowered the man on a rope down the canyon. The man had to be treated for scratches on his elbows and knees.

“He started off his hike at about 7 in the morning before the nature center opened and he was on a trail run,” Paige related.

Los Angeles County To Honor Firefighter Heroes in Pasadena

The Los Angeles County Fire Department will honor more than 100 people at the 2016 Valor Awards, to be held at the Pasadena Convention Center Tuesday, March 1, 2016, starting at 7:00 p.m.

The Valor Awards is an annual ceremony that recognizes extraordinary members of the Department and other first responder agencies and civilians alike for their exceptional heroism and exemplary service.

This year, four personnel will be given the Medal of Valor, the highest honor bestowed upon a member of the Department.

Fire Captain Daniel McKeen and Fire Fighter Matthew Prasch were part of the U.S. contingent that responded to the devastating earthquake Nepal in April 2015. The pair was sent on a search and rescue mission to a remote village in the Himalayan nation, where they endured strong aftershocks and dug a 30-foot tunnel – with their bare hands and a few tools – to rescue a woman buried underneath three stories of rubble.

Fire Captain Mark Roberts and Fire Fighter Leo Harris will be awarded the Medal for Valor in recognition of their heroic effort when they dove into a blazing building whose roof had collapsed and trapped four firefighters.

Free Household Hazardous Waste Roundup for Altadena, 3/12

There will be a free Household Hazardous Waste & E-Waste Recycling Roundup for Altadena area residents on Saturday, March 12, at Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Fleet Maintenance Yard, 252 West Mountain View Street, in Altadena from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Safely dispose of household hazardous waste such as antifreeze, unused pharmaceuticals, car batteries, used motor oil, paint, pesticides, home-generated sharps waste, e-waste, and more. It’s a free and easy way to safely dispose of items that are too toxic to trash.

Altadena Public Library Presents “The Art and Delight of Water Harvesting” with Leigh Adams

On Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m.  in the Barbara J. Pearson Community Room of the Main Library, join Altadena Library for an invigorating evening with local artist, educator, and water conservationist, Leigh Adams.

Leigh has reconfigured her Altadena yard to capture and hold as much water as possible. She utilized resourceful measures to turn an arid hillside into an oasis of fruit trees, herbs, and edibles. Leigh will explain water capturing techniques you can try at home; such as bioswales, hugelkultur, French drains, grey water, and more. She will also speak of conservation measures that have worked for her…and the enjoyment she has experienced along the way.

Leigh Adams’ love of art and children and her commitment to doing public art with children have resulted in a variety of differing art installations and activities. Although most of her work is done in the Pasadena, California area, Leigh has traveled and worked with children in Mexico, China and Central America for many years.

Los Angeles Man Rescued After Falling 40 Feet in Eaton Canyon

A 24-year-old man is currently being treated by hospital staff after suffering injuries from 40 foot fall from a canyon wall in Eaton Canyon on Thursday night. Fortunately, his hiking partner witnessed the fall and called 9-1-1 for help.

At 5:45 p.m., the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team was activated to assist the Los Angeles County Fire Department in rescuing the man who had lost his footing during a climb and had fallen 40 feet, landing at the base of the lower Eaton Canyon Waterfall in the Angeles National Forest. Altadena Mountain Rescue crews, along with Los Angeles County Fire Engine 66 and Squad 11, reached the hiker After hiking for approximately 25 minutes.

The injured hiker was bleeding from his head and complained of back, hip and head pain. The hiker was awake and alert, but due to his injuries, a fire department helicopter airlifted the injured hiker to a local hospital for treatment. Stolen Car Found, Driver Arrested in Altadena

On February 21, 2016 at 3:00 p.m., Altadena Deputies arrested Kevin Eldridge, 53 years old, for Grand Theft Auto (487(d)(1) PC in the 200 block of East Altadena Drive in Altadena.

Eldridge was a named suspect when the owner of the 2001 maroon BMW, 325i reported her car stolen to Los Angeles Police Department officers.

The two passengers were found to not be involved in any criminal activity and were allowed to leave. (The Altadena Drive address was not related to the suspect or victim of the stolen car, it was merely the location where the deputy made the traffic stop, officials said.)
