Mount Wilson Observatory Under the Lens at Altadena Historical Society Program

Mount Wilson Observatory Under the Lens at Altadena Historical Society Program

Christopher Purcell Presents Free Program Monday Oct. 26

The history of the world-famous Mount Wilson Observatory will be given at 7:30 p.m. Monday Oct. 26 at the Altadena Historical Society by retired aerospace engineer Christopher Purcell, from the Mount Wilson Institute.

The program will be at the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Drive, and is free and open to the public.

Founded by astronomer George Ellery Hale in 1904 with funding by the Carnegie Institution, the celestial observatory is located on top of 5,710-foot-high Mount Wilson, above Altadena in the San Gabriel Mountains.

It was at the Mount Wilson Observatory that famous astronomer Edwin Hubble was able to prove that the universe extends beyond the Milky Way Galaxy, and to the subsequent view that the universe is actually expanding.

Chris Purcell spent nearly 40 years in the aerospace industry, much of it related to spacecraft launch, trajectory analysis, and orbital control. He has a bachelor’s degree in astrophysics from UCLA and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from USC.

College Trustee Board Candidates Gather at PCC Election Forum Tuesday

College Trustee Board Candidates Gather at PCC Election Forum Tuesday

By EDDIE RIVERA, Community Editor

Following a tumultuous few years in which a troubled “porn professor” resigned after being threatened with firing, a Superintendent President was asked to resign at a cost of $403,000 to the district, and Pasadena City College was placed on probation by a regional accreditation review board, six candidates who have emerged to run for two vacant trustee board seats in the upcoming November 3 election.

Pasadena City College was placed on probation by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges in July for failing to comply with its own ethics, planning and communication policies. It has until October of 2017 to rectify its problems, or the college faces losing its academic accreditation entirely.

The six candidates appeared at Pasadena City College Tuesday evening for a candidates’ forum, hosted by the PCC Faculty Association.

Three of the six candidates — social scientist Martin Enriques, businessman and adjunct professor Tom Selinske, university professor James Osterling — are vying for the seat of resigned 30-year veteran Jeanette Mann in Area Two,

LA Sheriff Search and Rescue Teams Prepare for Potential Swift Water Rescues During Possible Rainy El Niño Season

LA Sheriff Search and Rescue Teams Prepare for Potential Swift Water Rescues During Possible Rainy El Niño Season

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s 8 search-and-rescue (SAR) teams are training and planning for the anticipated El Niño storms predicted for L.A. County. Last weekend 36 SAR specialists trained for swift-water rescue response. The focus was land-based operations which primarily deal with how to rescue a victim safely out of a fast flowing river or channel without having to enter the water. Upcoming future training will certify these SAR team members as Swift-water Rescue Technicians. Many current SAR team members already possess this certification, which deals with how to rescue a person trapped in a river or channel by entering the water and making contact with them. Swift-water rescue responses are the highest level of risk to the public safety agencies who respond. One-third of all swift-water deaths are rescuers who attempt to save someone from a river or channel.

The 8 SAR teams consist of team members who live in the immediate area and they will be pre-identifying likely areas prone to flooding.

Altadena’s First Best Fest Was a Hit

Altadena’s First Best Fest Was a Hit

Video and Story by MONICA TERADA | Click headline to see video

“Are you ready?” said Gerry O’Rourke, as he prepped his T-Shirt Canon for blast off.

“Three, two, one…”

Rourke’s canon shot out several t-shirts this Saturday morning at the Altadena Best Fest and was the hit attraction amongst kids.

“It’s so cool. I really want one in my bedroom,” said Scott Jameson, dripping in sweat from having run around trying to catch one of the shirts.

The festival took place on Mariposa St., where a section was blocked off from traffic, and several stands, food trucks, and even vintage trailers and campers came out for the “beautiful day,” as pointed out Johnny Agnew from Funky Junk Farms.

Agnew was one of the vintage trailers and campers exhibitors. According to him, it was a “great crowd” and he was “glad to be a part of it.”

The trailers ranged from big to small,

The Best of the Best: Best Fest Takes to the Streets

The Best of the Best: Best Fest Takes to the Streets

You don’t have to be a millionaire to experience the best Altadena has to offer. This year’s Best Fest offers a sampling of the town’s very top art, food, music and retailers. The festival expanded from the grounds of the Altadena library and has now taken to the streets.

“It was only artists initially. It was just an art fair and it was only artists. And then we had a food booth. And then we added a few community things. So we just ran out of space,” said Dale Lacasella, a festival organizer. “Last year we had 45 booths and it was just too crowded. So we decided to take it to the street.”

This year Best Fest has over 90 vendors, live music and activities for all ages.

Best Fest grew out of an annual art show on Mariposa Street and now includes everything from vintage cars to pet adoptions and live music. The art show, formerly called Art on Millionaire’s Row,
