Altadena Mountain Rescue Team Assists With Vehicle Crash
This past weekend the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team was participating in search and tracking recertification with the Mountain Rescue Association in Barstow, Calif. As the team was returning to Altadena just south of Hesperia on the 15 freeway at 6:45pm traffic came to a stop and the team saw a crowd of people standing outside their vehicles.
Team members saw a shoe on the freeway, approximately 100 feet south of the crowd of people. Knowing this is not a good sign, the team rushed to the crowd and saw a motorcycle rider splayed out on the roadway.
The rider, a 22-year old man residing in Moreno Valley, was complaining of difficulty breathing and multiple abrasions and contusions on all four extremities.
Bystanders in the crowd were saying the motorcycle passed at a high rate of speed and may have struck a slower moving car. California Highway Patrol and local fire department took over the scene and treatment of the motorcycle rider’s injuries.

The AHS board meets on a monthly basis, at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday, and directors often serve on committees and assist on AHS projects and programs. The board currently numbers nine men and women. We are seeking an additional three or four members.

Teen Tech Week at the Altadena Library
Local teens will be tuning in at the library as Altadena Library District celebrates the annual Teen Tech Week™ from March 6-11. They join thousands of other libraries and schools across the country who are celebrating this year’s theme, Be the Source of Change, to raise awareness about how Altadena Library District creates a space to extend teens’ learning beyond the classroom where they can explore, create, and share content.
Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) aimed at teens, their parents, educators, and other concerned adults.
Kate Shumaker, Teen Librarian, feels that “Getting teens into libraries is essential. Offering gaming, access to computers, and online homework help is important, and letting them know that we can help educate them on how to use these resources will get them in the door. Once they’re in the door, we can show teens that with technology at the library, anything is possible.”
From maker spaces,

Supervisor Barger Seeks Full Risk Assessment of County Dams and Spillways in Light of Oroville Dam Emergency
At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Kathryn Barger will introduce a motion directing county agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine any potential threats to public safety in the county’s system of dams, spillways and other water collection and diversion assets.
Barger, who represents the district with highest number of dams and other drainage facilities, said, “the Oroville situation reminds us of the need to proactively evaluate our county’s risk with regard to dams and other facilities which may be prone to failure from storms, earthquakes or other foreseeable events.”
Additionally, Barger’s motion will instruct the Department of Public Works to work with other county agencies as well as State and Federal partners to develop a list of priority infrastructure projects by district.

Injured Hikers Rescued
Two hikers who twisted their ankles while hiking at different locations in the area of Eaton Canyon were rescued by members of the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team (AMRT) and Los Angeles County rescuers Sunday afternoon.
A post on the Altadena Sheriff’s Station’s Facebook page said the team received the first call at about 2:15 p.m. about a 26-year-old woman who had an ankle injury as she hiked with a 28-year-old man on a dirt trail near Coyote Canyon.
The team couldn’t immediately determine the victim’s exact location because of poor cell phone reception, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department helped in the search.
About 30 minutes later, the AMRT members located the victim and found she had twisted her right ankle during the hike and could not walk out of the canyon. The team attended to her injury and then drove her and her companion to the Eaton Canyon Nature Center where they had parked their vehicle.
The victim said she would seek medical treatment at a later time.
