Altadena Chamber of Commerce Names 2015 Citizen and Business of the Year

The Altadena Chamber of Commerce and Civic Association (www.altadenachamber.org) has named its 2015 Citizen and Business of the Year.

The Citizen of the Year is Dr. Jane Brackman, President of the Altadena Historical Society and nationally-known scholar on the interaction of dogs and culture. The Business of the Year is Two Dragons Martial Arts, Shelene Hearring, CEO.

The honorees will be recognized at the Chamber’s annual installation event at the Altadena Town & Country Club on Feb. 5, 2016.

Citizen of the Year: Jane Brackman, Ph.D, President, Altadena Historical Society

As the one who guides the team that maintains Altadena’s attic, Citizen of the Year Jane Brackman came into preserving history in a roundabout way.

She’d always been interested in historic architecture. As an art education teacher, she created a high school course on the history of architecture. Later, she worked for the city of Chicago issuing film shooting permits when she met her husband, film and television director Rod Holcombe.

Hiker Falls 90 Feet Off Cliff Near Eaton Canyon Falls Monday Morning

Members of the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team rescued a hiker who fell about 90 feet off a cliff while hiking on the Eaton Canyon Falls trail about noon Monday.

Rescue personnel on board Engine 66 of the Los Angeles Fire Department also deployed to assist in the rescue.

Deputy Dan Paige of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Altadena station said the Department’s Air 5 rescue helicopter was on scene by 12:22 p.m. and was able to deploy paramedics near where the victim had fallen.

“The helicopter has dropped two paramedics down with the victim,” Paige said. “He is conscious and breathing. Two of our rescuers are also helping and we’re just waiting for the ground crews to hike in because they can’t hoist them out of the area.”

Paige said the canyon was too narrow for a helicopter to hoist the victim out, so ground crews had to move the victim out of the area before placing him on the helicopter. The victim was airlifted to Huntington Memorial Hospital.

11:37 AM – Alfonso Tugman, 54 years old of Altadena was arrested in the 700 block of Neldome Street for assault with a deadly weapon.
3:30 PM – Gaylon Hawthorne, 24 years old of Altadena was arrested in the 600 block of E. Palm Street for residential burglary. Suspect Hawthorne entered the residence via the unsecured front door. Property Stolen: blue jacket.

Monday, December 28th

12:50 PM – A vehicle was reported stolen from the 2800 block of Olive Avenue. Vehicle: gold 2003 Chevrolet. Vehicle recovered by Oxnard Police Department.
3:00 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 2700 block of Callecita Drive. Suspect(s) entered the residence by shattering the window. Possible suspect described as male, Black, in a newer model gray or blue Jaguar sedan. Property Stolen: unknown. On-going investigation.

Proposals for Homeless Funding Must Protect Local Government

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich said today that any proposal to alter or redirect the use of MHSA (Mental Health Services Act) funds should enhance the County’s existing efforts to address the homeless problem.

“Funding must follow treatment needs,” said Supervisor Antonovich. “Greater flexibility means supporting effective local programs including hospitalization and family participation in recovery as well as extending supportive housing services to those leaving restrictive environments, such as jails and hospitals, and ensuring their successful reentry into the community.”

State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin DeLeon is anticipated to announce today a proposal which may alter the way MHSA funding is directed to local government.
Since the enactment of Proposition 63 (the Mental Health Services Act), which provides additional money to support mental health services, Los Angeles County has maximized available funds to expand critical mental health services.

“Local governments across the state have the hands-on knowledge and experience about how to address the homeless problems in their counties and cities,” he added.

Monday, December 21st

10:00 PM – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 2000 block of Pepper Drive. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle by shattering the passenger window. A laundry basket, clothes, makeup, and perfumes were stolen.
12:00 PM – A grand theft occurred in the 1800 block of E. Mendocino Street. The suspect was possibly a relative. A MacBook laptop was stolen.
11:40 PM – A juvenile was arrested at Rite Aid, 735 E. Altadena Drive for shoplifting.

Tuesday, December 22nd

2:00 AM – An attempt burglary occurred at the Healing Center, 1911 N. Lake Avenue. The suspect(s) pried the door to attempt entry.

Frost Advisory Issued for Altadena for Monday Night, Tuesday Morning

The National Weather Service has issued another frost advisory for Altadena and nearby areas, in effect from midnight Monday night to 9 a.m. Tuesday. NWS predicts there will likely be “at least two hours of temperatures at or just slightly above freezing” tonight.

“Cold air behind a weak weather system will bring another round of cold overnight temperatures and areas of gusty winds,” the NWS says in its frost advisory for tonight.

NWS advises residents that measures should be taken to protect sensitive outdoor plants and that pets should be brought indoors.

Tuesday will be sunny with a high near 59 and calm winds from the north and northeast, and Tuesday night will be mostly clear with lows at 43.

Wednesday will be sunny and the temperature gets warmer, high around 64 with a north to northeast wind around five miles per hour becoming calm in the afternoon. Lows will be near 45 degrees.

Altadena Sheriff’s Station honors Deputy David Larimer, Who Died in the Line of Duty on Christmas Eve, 1941

The weather on Christmas Eve 1941 reflected the mood of the people in Los Angeles County. It was dreary, dark and filled with uncertainty. Less than three weeks before, the Japanese Imperial Navy smashed the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. Now, even sharing the daily weather forecast with the public was prohibited by a nervous War Department that feared that the enemy might use this knowledge to launch an attack against the West Coast. Cars moved slowly through the early evening darkness made more extreme by newly-imposed wartime blackout laws. Even Altadena’s famous Christmas Tree Lane was ordered into darkness for the first time in twenty-one years.

On this most uncertain of all Christmas Eves, when the promise of peace on earth and goodwill to men never seemed more remote, Altadena Deputy David Stout Larimer and his longtime partner Benjamin Davis were patrolling on Colorado Boulevard just west of Rosemead Boulevard. This area is patrolled by Temple Station today,
