Edward William is New Literacy Coordinator at Altadena’s Bob Lucas Memorial Branch and Literacy Center

The Bob Lucas Memorial Branch and Literacy Center is happy to welcome Edward William as its new literacy coordinator.

William also works in the literacy program at the Monrovia Public Library. His background includes eight years in public libraries, five years in literacy programs and a Master of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University.

He will be responsible for bringing new learners and tutors into the program, providing the resources and materials for learners to reach their literacy goals, conducting tutor training, and helping the program grow with the support of volunteer tutors.

“I have met with many of our tutors and learners, and I look forward to working with anyone who would like to join our program,” said William. “We always need volunteer tutors for our team. Registration Is Open for 2015 Pasadena Senior Games, Where It Seems There’s No Limit to What Seniors Can Do

There is no limit to what today’s seniors can accomplish. Last year at the Pasadena Senior games, Bradford Boyd took first place in the men’s 50-meter backstroke in the 85-to-90-year-old division and Kathy Bloom won the women’s 20K road race in the 50-to-54-year-old division.

Registration is now open for nearly 30 competitive athletic events for the 2015 Pasadena Senior Games scheduled May 23 to June 28. Registration deadlines and fees vary.

“Whether they are 50 or 80 and older, active seniors know that exercise and physical activity are the keys to a long, happy and healthy life,” said Cynthia Rosedale, director of events at the Pasadena Senior Center and vice chair of the California Senior Games Association. “Senior athletes are serious competitors.”

Teens: Henna Tattoos at the Altadena Library’s DIY Club

On May 15th at 4 p.m. teens and tweens, ages 11-17, can get gorgeous, personalized henna tattoos from guest artist Lernie Bueler. These designs are applied with a special henna paste, which is not permanent, but can stay on the skin for 1-3 weeks.

While waiting for your design, browse through our literature on the art of mehndi, practice sketching your own designs, and learn to make henna paste for home use! Lernie Bueler has been practicing the art of mehndi for over 10 years, sharing her talent and passion for this traditional art form with others at special private events as well as at colleges and libraries.

Teen DIY Club is a monthly pop-up makerspace for teens and tweens. What’s a makerspace? It is a place where we provide tools for creating all sorts of arts and crafts projects. We invite you to make what you love, share what you know, and learn something new. Each month, a new project is introduced!

Native Americans Drum, Dance in Local Canyon to Celebrate Spring’s “Awakening”

Tongva, Chumash, Navajo, and Choctaw were among the Native American nations represented Saturday in Eaton Canyon as a mini-powow celebrated the awakening of Spring and the culture and crafts of their tribes.

The festival at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center was last hosted in 2009, but “reinvigorated” and brought back this year, said Brenda Hurst, a volunteer docent naturalist with the Center.

The festival presented tribal drummers, musicians, dancers, and storytellers. Native artists and crafters showed handcrafted tools, jewelry and art upholding tribal traditions.

Presenters from local wildlife organizations brought with them indigenous creatures including two wolves and a number of snakes.

This Program was presented by Eaton Canyon Nature Center Associates in partnership with County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation, in the Supervisorial District of Michael D. Antonovich.

Sheriff’s Air 5 Lands at Farnsworth Park in Rescue of Hiker Who Fell 75 Feet Down Cliffside

This morning at 10:15 a.m., the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team was requested by Los Angeles County Fire Department, for the rescue of a mountain biker who fell approximately 75 feet off a cliff, on the Sam Merrill Trail, in the Angeles National Forest.

Several bystanders who saw the mountain biker fall were able to use their cell phones to call 911 and request help.  Sheriff’s Air Rescue 5 arrived first on scene, performed a hoist rescue of the victim and his bicycle, and flew the victim to Farnsworth Park.  Firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service and L.A. County Fire Department cleared Farnsworth Park of people for the helicopter to safely land at the park.  As soon as the helicopter lifted off the park patrons returned to the park.

The victim was covered head to toe in brown dust, and once the paramedics started treating him they saw he only had sustained minor cuts and scratches along his arms and legs.

SCE Helicopter Work Set for May 5 Has Been Postponed, No New Date Set

Southern California Edison Public Affairs spokesman Francisco Martinez announced yesterday afternoon that work by a low-flying helicopter which would have forced some neighborhood evacuations on Tuesday, May 5 has been postponed.

“We are in the process of scheduling a new date and sending an updated notice,” Martinez wrote in an email. “Once I have the new date I will let you know.”

SCE still plans to use a helicopter to help in replacing 2 deteriorated wooden poles behind a residence in the 800 block of La Vina Lane.

Earlier, SCE said a low-flying helicopter is required to remove the current wood poles and install new poles due to the “restricted access” of the poles. Actual helicopter flight time is under 15 minutes per pole, the company said.

17 homes are inside the operational area which will be evacuated during external load operations.

The company said in a press release “at no time will our helicopter over fly any residence with a load attached.”

Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management Reminds Altadenans to Prepare for the Big One

The Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management reminds Altadenans who have been thinking about major earthquakes lately in the wake Nepal’s tumbler to consider that event a wake-up call to get prepared for what, inevitably, will happen here.

(After all, those mountains didn’t just happen, without earthquakes accompanying their birth.)

The agency on Tuesday provided the following tips on what to do during an earthquake:

– When you are in public places, be aware of your surroundings and identify your safe spaces.

– If you experience shaking, the recommended actions are to drop under a piece of furniture. Take cover under the piece of furniture by protecting your head and neck with one arm/hand. Hold on to the piece of furniture’s leg to keep it from shifting or uncovering you until the shaking completely stops. Learn more at DropCoverHoldOn.org.

– Do not run out of buildings during an earthquake as most people are injured by falling debris as they try to exit buildings during the shaking.

2015 Courageous Citizens Awards Program Featuring Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey

The 2015 Courageous Citizens Awards Program featuring Los Angeles County District Attorney, Jackie Lacey will be presented at the Pasadena Rotary Club on Wednesday, May 6th Lunch, meeting and presentation begins at 12 p.m. at the University Club of Pasadena, 175 N. Oakland Ave., Pasadena. The public is welcome to attend no reservations necessary check in at registration. Luncheon tickets are $30.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office created the Courageous Citizens Award in 1985 to commend individuals who have acted with courage and at considerable personal risk to help a victim of a crime, to assist in the capture of a suspect or to testify in the face of extraordinary pressures. The award recipients exemplify the highest form of community service.

District Attorney Jackie Lacey was elected into office in 2012 in a historic election, becoming the first female DA and the first African American to serve in that position in Los Angeles County since 1850. DA Jackie Lacey will introduce the program and the Deputy DAs who handled the cases in court.
