End of Summer Reading Finales on Tap for the Altadena Public Library

The Altadena Library District is holding a series of Summer Reading Program finales this coming weekend until Tuesday, August 4th, to mark the end of the annual reading program that started in late June.

The Teens Reading Program ended today, Thursday, July 30th, 3 p.m. Candy sushi for the participants; sundaes were served along with games for the participants. The finale also featured the announcement of who won the grand prize for the Teen Summer Reading Program and raffle prizes including the tabletop games King of Tokyo and King of New York.

For adult participants, their own Summer Reading Finale will be on Saturday, August 1st, from 2 to 3 p.m. Every adult who completes his or her reading log will receive a goodie bag at the event. Winners in the bookface and sleeveface photo contest will also be unveiled. In this contest, participants take pictures of themselves holding a book cover or record sleeve obscuring or augmenting any part of the body,

Tofu! Tiffani! Toby! Dorothy! Meet Our Friendly Pets of the Week

Tofu (A380991) is a sweet eight-year-old Chihuahua and Parson Jack Russell Terrier mix. He is a calm, affectionate, easy going senior who loves sitting in laps and and going for walks. Tofu has been out on our mobile unit where he was loved by all! Tofu also qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors program which waives the adoption fee for adopters age 60 and up. The mandatory microchip fee of $20 still applies. Tofu’s regular adoption fee is $125, including the spay surgery, microchip and a set of vaccines.

Meet gorgeous Tiffani (A381086)! She is a two-year-old petite tortie. You will often find her on top of the perch greeting visitors in the cattery. Tiffani loves attention, face rubs, and playtime. She is a very social and confident feline that would do great in loving forever home.

Next Week’s, It’s “National Night Out” in Altadena

Altadena’s National Night Out activities will be held on Tuesday, August 4th, at the Farnsworth Park at 568 E. Mount Curve Avenue, starting at 5 p.m.

Deputy Dan Paige at the Altadena Sheriff’s Station said the Night Out will be held on the middle picnic area south of the covered picnic area and north of the softball diamond. The area is far more level than areas used in the past and there is ample setting, lighting and electrical outlets.

As in previous years’ National Nights Out in Altadena, various units and agencies look at the event as an opportunity to touch base with the community and showcase their personnel and services. National Nights Out are held to promote closer cooperation between the community and institutions involved in law enforcement and public safety functions.

Among the units that will be represented at the Altadena National Night Out are the Altadena Uniform Patrol, Altadena Posse, Altadena Search and Rescue, Altadena CERT, Altadena Explorer Post, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s VIDA Program,

Free Concerts in the Park Presents Mighty Burnt Bacon at Farnsworth Park This Saturday

What has 4 horns, 20 legs and makes a sizzling sound?

The MIGHTY Burnt Bacon are a 10-piece 60s style, soul band from North Hollywood whose mission is to bring the magic and the music of the 1960’s to a brand new generation of fans and this Saturday, August 1 they’ll be playing their hearts out at Farnsworth Park.

The band is a fun, high energy ensemble that features the unique power and passion of a “woman dominant” lineup. So be sure to bring your smiling faces and your dancing shoes, because if this band can’t get you dancing – you aren’t alive!

The concert starts at 7 p.m. at the Farnsworth Park Amphitheater, 586 Mount Curve Ave. Bring a picnic, or enjoy tacos from El Patron Mexican Restaurant or beer and wine from the Altadena Rotary Club. Admission is free.

Altadena Library Awarded Pitch An Idea Grant

The Altadena Library has been awarded $30,000 from the Pitch an Idea grant, which is awarded annually by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and administered by the California State Librarian.

The funds will be used to expand Altadena Library’s teen makerspace, the monthly DIY Club, at the main library. DIY Club kicked off January 2014, and it has continued to be a staple of teen programming ever since.

The grant will pay for exciting new technology like Macbook Pros with film editing software, 3D printers, film making equipment, and sewing machines, all supplemented by print resources to increase the technological side of our makerspace, which has focused on lower-tech activities like string art, duct tape crafts, and hand sewing stuffed animals.

“Our mission is to improve society, and specifically our community, through facilitating knowledge creation” said Mindy Kittay, the Libraries District Director. “We have been doing this, and I believe doing it well, on a shoestring budget.

9:15 PM – Lashawn Zimmerman, 36 years old of Altadena, was arrested in the 2200 block of Santa Anita Avenue for spousal assault.

First Date Goes Awry as Air 5 Chopper Called in to Rescue Young Couple on Cliff

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Air 5 helicopter rescued a couple from a cliff at Lowe Canyon, near Dawn Mine, above Altadena in the Angeles National Forest Friday afternoon.

The two young hikers — who were on their first date — were airlifted to safety by Special Enforcement Bureau deputy sheriff tactical paramedics and Altadena Mountain Rescue reserve sheriff deputies.

The hikers had a map and a phone, but the trails can be confusing. When they realized they were lost, the hikers wisely stopped searching for a way out, and fortunately were able to get a cell phone signal and call Altadena Sheriff’s Station for help.

Neither hiker was injured, authorities said.

Missing “At Risk” Young Man Has Been Located, Authorities Report

19-year-old Altadenan Jonathan Taylor Clark, missing since about 3:00 a.m. last Saturday morning, has been located out of state and is reportedly safe, authorities said today.

Captain Christopher Reed of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Altadena Station said the development comes two days after Clark’s mother received an email from her son, saying he loved her and that he was sorry. She emailed him back.

Now Clark is located, Reed said the Sheriff’s Department is “working on getting him home.”

Clark is Autistic and should take prescribed medication daily. It was revealed during the search for him that he had previously run away and during one incident was ultimately located in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“Thank you all who took the time to post flyers,” Reed said.

Reed said more information about Clark’s disappearance would be released shortly.
