Metro to Host Telephone Town Hall Tuesday for its 2024 Budget Process

CITY NEWS SERVICE

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will host a public, interactive telephone town hall Tuesday to gather feedback about the agency’s fiscal year 2024 budget process.

The telephone town hall is slated for 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Participants can share their comments and concerns on Metro initiatives, including alternative ways to ensure public safety, enhanced cleaning and the improvement of customers’ experience using transit services.

“Public participation and input are important so that the budget under development reflects the needs and priorities of the public,” according to a statement from Metro. “Metro encourages all Angelenos to participate and offer their input on the kinds of work and projects that should be prioritized in the FY2024 budget.”

Metro will randomly contact about 100,000 residents from various ethnic and economic backgrounds from across Los Angeles County through an automated system. Residents can also pre-register to participate at https://bit.ly/40GPBMf.

LA County Board Orders Progress Pride Flag to Fly at County Buildings

LA County Board Orders Progress Pride Flag to Fly at County Buildings

CITY NEWS SERVICE

The Progress Pride Flag will fly over Los Angeles County offices during June’s Pride Month under a motion unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

The motion by Supervisors Janice Hahn and Lindsey Horvath directed the county’s Internal Services Department to raise “the Progress Pride Flag at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration and Los Angeles County facilities where the American and California flags are displayed during the month of June, while we celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month this year and every year moving forward.”

Such a move is in stark contrast to the action taken last month by the Huntington Beach City Council, which voted to no longer fly the Pride flag on city-owned property. The vote came just two years after the council voted unanimously to fly it.

“We are seeing anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-trans bills being passed at an alarming rate across the country,” Hahn said in a statement after the vote. “Here in Los Angeles County we’re making our position clear: in the largest county in the nation,

LA County Looks to Raise Awareness of Gun Violence Restraining Orders

LA County Looks to Raise Awareness of Gun Violence Restraining Orders

CITY NEWS SERVICE

Calling it an effective law that is underutilized locally, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Tuesday directed its staff to develop a public awareness campaign about the state’s red flag law allowing weapons to be seized from people deemed to be a danger of harming themselves or others.

The 2016 law allows certain people — including police, family members, domestic partners, housemates and school officials — to petition a court for a Gun Violence Restraining Order. Such an order mandates that the subject of the petition who is deemed a threat to themselves or others be stripped of firearms and ammunition for up to five years. The law also prohibits anyone subject to a GVRO from purchasing weapons and ammunition, including those who do not currently possess guns.

Supervisor Janice Hahn said that while the law is effective, it is underutilized, saying, “most people in L.A. County don’t know they exist.”

Under a motion Hahn co-authored with Supervisor Hilda Solis,

LA County Supervisors Fire Embattled Probation Chief

LA County Supervisors Fire Embattled Probation Chief

After resisting calls for his resignation, Los Angeles County Probation Department chief Adolfo Gonzales was fired Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.

“Our juvenile halls are in crisis. The state has found them unsuitable, and they are at risk of being shut down. Youth are being hurt and are not attending school. Staff are being attacked and many are not showing up to work,” Board of Supervisors Chair Janice Hahn said in a statement. “(The) void in leadership starting from the top has allowed this situation to fester. Our board’s decision to terminate Chief Gonzales is only the first step of a long road to fixing our juvenile halls and supporting the youth in our care and the staff who work with them.”

Gonzales could not be reached for comment.

Hahn and Supervisor Kathryn Barger last week called on Gonzales to resign his position, following a 5-2 vote Thursday by the county’s Probation Oversight Commission also calling for him to step down.

Gonzales,

Thousands of Trade Jobs Expected in L.A. County With New Labor Agreement

STAFF REPORT

Los Angeles County will execute a first-of-its-kind agreement with trade and union entities that is expected to bring thousands of trade and skilled labor jobs to the region.

The County Board of Supervisors approved a motion authored by Supervisor Kathryn Barger and co-authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn on Tuesday that will result in creating the Countywide Project Labor Agreement (PLA).

The PLA will ensure that county-funded construction projects worth more than $500,000 will hire workers from local and disadvantaged communities, provide apprenticeships and job training opportunities, and promote fair wages and benefits.

“This motion will build up the future of the County’s workforce so we can offer good paying and stable careers for the next generation of skilled labor and trade workers,” Supervisor Kathryn Barger said.

Supervisor Janice Hahn said the PLA is “the most important workforce development policy our county has done in decades.”

Chris Hannan, Executive Secretary of the Los Angeles and Orange Counties Building Trades Council,

LA County Residents Can Help Shape How Millions Are Spent on Community Projects

LA County Residents Can Help Shape How Millions Are Spent on Community Projects

Los Angeles County residents have a chance to provide their input on how millions of dollars should be spent on community projects that aim to address racial and economic disparities.

The Los Angeles County Care First and Community Investment (CFCI) initiative is a voter-approved measure that allocates funds for alternatives to incarceration and programs that serve under-resourced communities across the county.

The CFCI Advisory Committee, which is composed of eight county department appointees and 17 community representatives, is seeking recommendations from the public on what priorities and projects they want to see funded by CFCI.

The committee held six listening sessions last week, where they heard from thousands of residents and stakeholders about their needs and ideas. They are also collecting feedback through an online survey, which is open until March 6.

The survey asks residents to rank their top preferences for CFCI funding in categories such as:
• Community health services
• Community counseling
• Youth development programs
• Affordable housing
• Supportive housing,

Supervisor Barger Calls for Report on LA County Train Derailment Readiness

Supervisor Barger Calls for Report on LA County Train Derailment Readiness

CITY NEWS SERVICE

Reacting to the recent train derailment in Ohio, Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger will ask her colleagues next week to support a call for an assessment of the county’s level of readiness to respond to a similar disaster.

The fiery Feb. 3 Ohio derailment prompted evacuations when toxic chemicals were burned after being released from five tanker rail cars carrying vinyl chloride that were in danger of exploding.

The town of East Palestine, Ohio, has been gripped by fear and anxiety since the derailment.

Barger’s motion going before the board Tuesday would direct the county’s Office of Emergency Management to assess and report on the county’s level of preparedness and general disaster response readiness in the event a similar derailment takes place locally.

“Freight rail plays a critical role in the delivery of goods and commodities in our region and beyond, since Los Angeles County is home to the largest port in North America,”

Winner of Record $2 Billion Powerball Jackpot at Altadena Service Station Revealed

STAFF REPORT

The winner of a record-setting $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot was identified Tuesday as Edwin Castro, who purchased the winning ticket at an Altadena service station and opted for a lump-sum payment of $997.6 million.

No other details about Castro were released, including where he lives. State lottery officials said winners’ names are a matter of public record in California, but no other identifying information was released to protect the person’s privacy.

Castro declined an invitation from California Lottery officials to appear at a Sacramento news conference, where his name was revealed. But a statement was read on his behalf at the event.

“As much as I am shocked and ecstatic to have won the Powerball drawing, the real winner is the California public school system,” the statement read. “The mission of the California Lottery, which is to provide supplemental funding for California public education, both public schools and colleges, makes this a huge win for the state.

L.A. County Pays $20K Reward to Informant Who Helped Solve Altadena Crest Homicide

L.A. County Pays $20K Reward to Informant Who Helped Solve Altadena Crest Homicide

STAFF REPORT

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors today approved a $20,000 reward for an individual whose information and assistance led to the successful apprehension and conviction of the person responsible for the murder of Marcus Nieto.

Nieto was last seen alive on February 15, 2013. Two horseback riders on the Altadena Crest horse trail found his body the next morning. The Medical Examiner-Coroner’s subsequent investigation found that Nieto suffered blunt force trauma to the head and suggested that he was murdered where his body was found on a trail on the 3800 block of Canon Boulevard in Altadena.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who introduced multiple reward extension motions, shared her perspective on reaching this milestone in Nieto’s murder.

“Today’s approval of the reward payout is a testament to our Board’s commitment to compensate individuals who courageously step forward and help solve a crime,” Barger said. “I believe rewards work and bring justice to family members and loved ones who have gone through the pain of losing someone near and dear to them.
