Altadena Mountain Rescue Team Featured at Free July 24 Historical Society Program
Dramatic rescues of lost and injured hikers in the San Gabriel Mountains by Altadena’s renowned Mountain Rescue Team will be featured in a 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 24 program sponsored by the Altadena Historical Society.
The program, presented by Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dep. Dan Paige and AHS member William Dawson, will be free and open to the public at the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Drive.
Founded in 1951, the rescue team is comprised of citizen volunteers and is based at the Altadena Sheriff’s station, one of eight such Sheriff’s Department rescue teams in the county.
“Bill Dawson and Dep. Dan Paige have searched the archives and files of the Sheriff’s Department and the Historical Society to produce this fascinating, illustrated program,” said Historical Society President Kathy Hoskins.
“Bill gives an overview of the historical uses of the mountains above Altadena, first by natives, then explorers, then tourists and now residents and day-hikers,” Hoskins said, “and Deputy Paige describes and illustrates some of the dangerous and dramatic rescues of lost and injured hikers that the team performs almost every weekend.”

Local Authors Want to Inspire Pasadena Public School Students With More Real-Life Stories
Pasadena non-profit Light Bringer Project is about to launches the fifth issue of its online literary journal created by local authors as a resource for engaging and inspiring underserved public school students with relatable stories that are often missing in textbooks.
“Literature For Life” provides greater Los Angeles area young people with tailor-made lesson plans designed to help teachers introduce locally-produced writing and artwork into their classrooms, so that students may see themselves and their communities better represented in their curriculum.
The free resource is published in two issues a year and contains a collection of fiction and nonfiction, poetry, short stories, articles, essays, and artwork from both award-winning authors and emerging young writers.
“The idea is to introduce current contemporary literature in the main from Los Angeles emerging writers into the classrooms of underserved public schools,” explained Tom Coston, president of Light Bringer Project.
“Ultimately, the bottom-line is to cultivate a love of reading and writing again by making stories that are relatable and current for students that have to do with their lives that are things that they can easily identify with.”
“Literature For Life” was created in 2011 by Altadena author Jervey Tervalon who spent five years as a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District being dissatisfied with the textbooks that he was forced to use with his lesson plans.

Free concert at Farnsworth Park this Saturday, July 8th at 7:00 p.m. at the amphitheater. The Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena presents the 21st Annual Summer Concert Series at Farnsworth Park, located at 568 E. Mount Curve Ave.
Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, America’s premier youth fiddling show band from Saline, Michigan, astounds audiences every time the group takes the stage. The musicians, all high school students, present an energetic and polished show that features a diverse range of music from American folk, fiddle, bluegrass, jazz, western swing, and Celtic traditions. Spirited vocals and Appalachian step dancing combine with the instrumentals to create an unforgettable live performance.
Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic began in 1994 with a simple idea: introduce an alternative style of music education to public school students to maintain and expand their interest in music performance. Since then, the group has definitely set the standard for extracurricular music programs in the United States. It has grown into a model of instruction and motivation that is being emulated across the nation.

The Altadena Library Announces Partnership with the Princeton Review to Provide PSAT and SAT Prep Courses
PSAT & SAT Prep for Teens – Starting October 28th, 2017
The Altadena Library is thrilled to announce a partnership with the Princeton Review to provide PSAT and SAT prep courses!
This series begins on October 28th with a practice PSAT test. Over the following months, participants will be given the opportunity to review their results and attend three more sessions covering curated drawn from the results of the practice test.
“Over the past several months, several parents and teens have expressed an interest in free SAT prep classes. This series is designed to meet that need,” says Kate Shumaker, teen librarian. These classes will be offered free of charge during the 2017-2018 school year. This is a great opportunity to start getting ready for your SATs by practicing for the PSAT. The PSAT is slightly more accessible to younger students allowing preparation to begin as early as ninth grade.

Altadena Town Council Election Saturday
The Altadena Town Council election kicks off Saturday at various polling locations throughout the community from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Representatives to the Altadena Town Council are elected by Census Tract (CT) to two-year terms, and each tract has two members who are elected in alternating years.

Census Tract 4602 incumbent candidate Billy Malone has been on the Altadena Town Council since 2013. Malone’s focus will be on keeping this community the upbeat, unique place that it has always been while working toward its financial stability through encouragement of economic and business growth, according to the ATC website.
Malone has sat on the Executive Committee for the past two years and has also sat on the Board and served as President for the Altadena Chamber of Commerce. Malone’s involvement as an Altadena Town Council member has also included assisting local Pasadena Unified School District schools and community organizations in obtaining grants.
