Woman’s Body Found Near Popular Hiking Trail Friday Night
[Updated Saturday, July 20, 2019 | 10:00 a.m.] A woman’s body was discovered near a popular hiking trail above The Cobb Estate in Altadena just before 9 p.m. Friday night.
Sheriff’s officials were called to the spot by the report of a body inside a tent, authorities said.
The body was located close to the Sam Merrill Trailhead near East Loma Alta Drive and Lake Avenue.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. homicide detectives responded to the scene.
Coroner’s officials removed the body just before midnight. The woman’s identity has not been released.
A coroner’s official said the body showed “obvious signs of decay,” indicating it has been lying in the spot for some time.

Between 2:30 PM and 6:00 AM (Wed) – A commercial burglary occurred in the 500 block of Ventura Street. Suspect(s) entered the location via the roof. Stolen: unknown items.

Between 11:00 AM and 6:20 PM (Fri) – A petty theft from a vehicle occurred in the 400 block of Alameda Street. Stolen: 2002 Honda Accord catalytic converter.
Thursday, July 11th
Between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM – A vehicle burglary occurred in the area of Lake Avenue and Loma Alta Drive. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle by prying the driver’s side door lock.

8:37 AM – A vehicle burglary occurred in the area of Altadena Drive and Roosevelt Avenue. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle by shattering the window. Loss: unknown.
12:00 PM – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 1200 block of Sonoma Drive. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle via unknown means. Stolen: vehicle registration and insurance card.

Historian Paul Ayers Presents Program on Abolitionist’s Bloody Deeds, Rock-Star Status in Pasadena and Burial on Altadena Hilltop
Drawing on nearly 20 years of research, historian Paul Ayers will present “Owen Brown—Altadena’s First Celebrity” at the Altadena Historical Society, 7:30 p.m. Monday July 22 at the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Drive.
The illustrated program is free to Historical Society members; a donation is requested of nonmembers.
Ayers, a San Gabriel Mountains historian and preservationist, will recount the histories of Owen and Jason Brown, sons of American slavery abolitionist and insurrectionist John Brown, and their participation in the murderous raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in 1859.
After many years in hiding, Owen and his brother Jason found their way to Pasadena, where Ayers will recount their “rock-star-like reception, their lives of quiet and contemplation in the hills of West Altadena, the death of Owen and his burial on Little Roundtop, a hill above what today we know as the Meadows subdivision.”

Altadena Artist Celebrated in Group Art Show
The Davyd Whaley Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Los Angeles area artists, celebrated their third year anniversary with a special art exhibit showcasing the work of their 2016-2019 grant recipients. Titled, Three Years, The Davyd Whaley Foundation, the opening reception was held on June 8, 2019 at the Castelli Art Space.
Altadena resident Margaret Griffith, recipient of a Mid-Career Artist Grant, was among the seven artists. Margaret’s work takes on a variety of forms, as installation, sculpture and drawing. A self-proclaimed urban scavenger, she searches for interesting patterns and architectural clues that inform her surroundings and help her find deeper connections with the sites she inhabits or experiences. Among some of her pieces shown were “Alba”, Water jet cut copper, 45″ h x 37″ w x 18″ d, 2018 and “15th, 17th, and Pennsylvania” detail, handcut synthetic paper and acrylic, detail. Pasadena Man Killed on Altadena Drive-By Shooting Identified
The Pasadena man shot dead by an unknown drive-by killer on Monday, June 11 has been identified by the Coroner’s office as William Harris IV, 19.
Harris and a 17-year-old boy were both shot at about 4:30 p.m. in the 2100 block of Santa Anita Avenue in Altadena, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies.
In a statement, the Department said both victims were transported to a local hospital where Harris succumbed to his injuries.
The second victim was shot in the lower extremities and transported to the local hospital in an unknown condition. He has not been named.
The suspect was seen shooting at the victims from inside a vehicle. The vehicle description is unknown and he was last seen driving Southbound on Santa Anita Avenue.
The investigation is ongoing, and there is no additional information available at this time.

Young Man Dead in Altadena Shooting, Second Youth Survives
A shooter targeted two young men Monday, killing one and seriously wounding the second, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies. In a statement, the Department said the shooting occurred at 4:39 p.m. in the 2100 block of Santa Anita Avenue, Altadena Both victims were transported to a local hospital where one 18-year-old succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. He was not identified.The second victim was shot in the lower extremities and transported to the local hospital in an unknown condition.
The suspect was seen shooting at the victims from inside a vehicle. The vehicle description is unknown and he was last seen driving Southbound on Santa Anita Avenue.
