Here are our Calendar highlights for this chilly Saturday in Altadena.  Please note, the Folly Bowl opening performance will go on, not in the soggy Bowl itself but rather inside in a special venue (Folly Bowl Update: Rain Causes Switch from Altadena to Eagle Rock for Season Opener).

ALSO: Let’s not overlook the “bookstravaganza” at the Altadena Library, as reader Hugo Arteaga reminds us!  See here.

Altadena Town Council Candidate Forum to be Held May 28

A forum for candidates running for a seat on the Altadena Town Council will be held Thursday, May 28 in the Altadena Library Community Room, 600 E Mariposa Street.

Voting in the election will be held on June 2 and June 6.

The candidate forum is sponsored by Neighbors Building a Better Altadena, a group dedicated to creating a stronger, more cohesive community.

At the forum, each candidate will be offered an opportunity to speak to the entire community and respond to additional questions from attendees.

Then the group will gather by census tract with each tract’s candidates available for more detailed discussions with their neighbors.

Prior to the forum, each candidate will be asked to answer in writing three questions about their goals for the community and the Town Council, and the responses will be posted on the group’s web site at buildingabetteraltadena.org.

A similar survey of candidates was conducted in the last election; the responses can be seen at http://buildingabetteraltadena.org/Town_Council_Election_2014!.html

Folly Bowl Update: Rain Causes Switch from Altadena to Eagle Rock for Season Opener

Folly Bowl Update: Rain Causes Switch from Altadena to Eagle Rock for Season Opener

“Although we loved getting the 1.9 inches of rain and hail last night, alas the Folly Bowl will be too wet and cold to host the concert tomorrow evening,” said Folly Bowl owner Susanna Dadd  on Friday, continuing to say “Happily, a new indoor venue has been found, and I hope you will be able to make it and enjoy the concert in comfort. The concert will be held at … 4901 Onteora Way, Eagle Rock 90041.”

Dadd said the concert was also rescheduled for June 20. too, so there will be another opportunity to hear this wonderful music in the Folly Bowl at a warmer time of year.

Stars of the performance will be the sitar and the cello making beautiful music as Peter Jacobson and Paul Livingstone, performing as Sangam, open the summer concert season at 7:30 p.m.

Over the past decade, the duo has blended the sounds of their instruments to create a fusion of Indian ragas,

Despite Spring Showers, the 38th Annual Memorial Torch Relay Run Kicked-off Without a Hitch

Despite Spring Showers, the 38th Annual Memorial Torch Relay Run Kicked-off Without a Hitch

Executive Officer Neal Tyler led the ceremony this morning on the footsteps of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Building and recalled the reason for this important run: To honor the memory of the brave and dedicated peace officers in Los Angeles County who sacrificed their lives in the performance of their duties.

During his speech recalling the incidents in which our fallen brothers were taken, Tyler solemnly reminded all in attendance, “There is never an easy day for a guardian.”

The Memorial Torch Relay Run takes place during National Police Week, a time designated in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to nationally honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Many off-duty sworn and civilian Sheriff’s Department personnel from the Sheriff’s Information Bureau, Personnel Administration, Custody Operations, and Court Services Division participated in the race. Recruits of currently-training Academy Class 406 ran in formation, commencing the journey with a lap around the Sheriff’s Headquarters parking lot, making their support known with enthusiastic jodies and thunderous claps.

Woodbury House Update: It Was Not Auctioned Today

Woodbury House Update: It Was Not Auctioned Today

The owner of Woodbury House said Thursday that the historical property, which in late April became the subject of widespread community concern when a foreclosure auction notice (shown above) was photographed posted on its front door, was in fact not auctioned today.

Owner Peter Leissos had told Altadena Now earlier this month that he had received assurances that the foreclosure sale would be postponed indefinitely in order for the mortgage servicer, Nation Star, to complete a review of the property’s files.

Today Leissos said “the sale was removed from auction as they [Nation Star]  continue to review the file.”

For full background on this story, see “Woodbury House, Storied Altadena Landmark, Reportedly Wins Reprieve from May 14 Foreclosure Auction.

Second Wave of Cold Front Expected Friday, More Rain With It

Second Wave of Cold Front Expected Friday, More Rain With It

The unseasonably cold storm system that swept in Thursday will linger over Southwestern California all day Friday. Friday’s weather will bring more showers and possibly thunderstorms, the National Weather Service said, in a copy of the weather that swept across the Southland on Thursday afternoon. The high is expected be about 64. The chance of precipitation is ranked at 80%.

This second wave will be stronger and bring most of the week’s precipitation to Los Angeles County on Friday. There will be wintry driving conditions for the local mountains with snow levels as low as 5,000 feet. With the cold air mass aloft there is a potential for isolated thunderstorms with dangerous lightning, small hail, gusty and erratic winds and isolated waterspouts.

Rain could begin to let up Friday night, with only a 20 percent chance of showers before 11 p.m. The night will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. Southwest winds at 5 to 10 mph will become light south southwest in the evening.

[Updated] Altadena Deputies to Participate in the 38th Annual Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Memorial Torch Relay This Weekend

[Updated]  Altadena deputies will take part in the 38th Annual Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Memorial Torch Relay May 15-17 to honor 18 fallen peace officers who died in the line of duty.

The Memorial Torch Relay Run is comprised of 58 legs and will start from the Sherman Block Sheriff’s Headquarters in Monterey Park, traveling more than 300 miles to end at the Altadena Sheriff’s Station on May 17. More than 2,000 runners will participate, including local deputies.

“We are taking possession of the torch on Sunday, May 17th, at Crescenta Valley Station and transporting it 7.8 miles to Altadena Station,” said Sergeant Matthew Bossier, Jr.

Community members are invited to cheer on their local deputies and family members as they run, bike or walk the 7.8 mile route.

Although the start of the route, from CVS to Windsor Avenue remains the same, the course will change to eliminate Fair Oaks Avenue, to create an easier route for participants, Bossier said.

From Windsor,

“Meditations East and West” with Sangam Opens the Folly Bowl Season May 16

“Meditations East and West” with Sangam Opens the Folly Bowl Season May 16

The sitar and cello together will make beautiful music as Peter Jacobson and Paul Livingstone, performing as Sangam, open the summer concert season on May 16 at 7:30, at The Folly Bowl in Altadena.

Over the past decade, the duo has blended the sounds of their instruments to create a fusion of Indian ragas, jazz counterpoint and rhythmic sounds that they call “ragajazz chamber music.”

Jacobson and Livingstone have performed with the Arohi Ensemble, and have been featured on Grammy-winning albums with Ozomatli, Quetzal & Rickey Kej.

Folly Bowl owner Susanna Dadd suggests that attendees bring a blanket and cushions for comfort.

“Please join us for a delightful concert to start our season,” she said. “This music has not yet been recorded, so this is the only way you can hear it at present.”

Bring a picnic basket to the garden amphitheater and enjoy a meal at the Bowl or just settle in before the concert starts. The doors open at 7 p.m.
