Residents of the neighborhood around the 183 E. Palm St. property registered their objections to turning the property into a school for autistic spectrum children at Tuesday’s Altadena Town Council meeting.
The site, formerly used by Sahag Mesrob Armenian Christian School, is now under consideration by the Almansor Center in South Pasadena to expand their services. But residents of the neighborhood didn’t want the same experience with Almansor as they had with Sahag Mesrob,

The Altadena Sheriff’s station is looking for suspects who shattered a car window and stole a cell phone in a car burglary that took place in the lot of the AM-PM on 1880 N. Lake Av. on Sunday morning at around 12:45 AM:
Loss: Blk Samsung “Mythic” touch-screen cell phone
Summary: On 5/16 the above subjects were identified as possibly being involved in a vehicle burglary.

Yesterday, the La Vina HOA’s attorney informed counsel for plaintiffs in the consolidated cases that the HOA will not petition the Supreme Court for review of the Court of Appeal’s affirmation of the judgment and attorney’s fees award in favor of the County in the case of County of Los Angeles v.

Aveson Charter School is holding its annual June Jubilee event coming up on Sat., June 5. It’s a family affair featuring games, music, food and prizes for kids and their parents in a low-key festival atmosphere. There will be face painting, bounce houses, kid’s crafts, a silent auction and a plant sale. And of course those regular favorites, confetti eggs and snow cones!
This free community event is open to everyone, students, families and our local community.

Representatives of the Aveson Charter Schools hosted a “meet and greet” with neighbors at Loma Alta Park Gymnasium on Thursday night to discuss the relocation of Aveson’s upper school students to the commercial building at the corner of Lincoln Ave. and Altadena Dr. Aveson hosted the meeting to address any concerns neighborhood residents might have and to hear ideas about the role the school might play in the immediate community.

Since May is National Foster Care Month, the folks at Altadena Library would like to remind both foster parents and young people in foster care of its Library Cards for Foster Youth Program. Foster care givers may sign up their foster children for library cards so that they may check out books and other materials as well as use the computer centers in the Main and Branch libraries.

Attendance was a little light at Saturday’s Abstract: Altadena exhibit held in Galloway Alley. It was a wonderful exhibit of abstract photos from local photographers organized by Molly Tierney. Local merchants were there displaying there goods and a variety of food was available. Those Manning Boys were on hand and provided music.

Our friend and mighty Altadena blogger Debbi Swanson Patrick (
Altadena Above It All) has this great tribute to her husband, Steven Patrick, who died April 23. Yet another creative Altadenan — he helped designed theme park attractions, pop concert special effects, and spacecraft systems — he will be missed, and our hearts go out to Debbi and the rest of his family.

Reader Dierdre Del Re sent us this note about the passing of Lynn Redgrave:
Ms. Redgrave was a regular dog walker at the Cobb Estate for a short while several years back – she was performing at either the Mark Taper or Dorothy Chandler. This was perhaps 2005 or 06.
I had a friendly dog at the time and often stopped to chat idly with her while our dogs socialized.

Opening Reception will be held Saturday, May 8, 2010 from 6-8pm
Nicole’s work is fundamentally about growth, awareness, and overcoming obstacles. Her artwork is a combination of digital photography and an ancient wax painting technique called encaustics. The work depicts moody environments showcasing flora and fauna. They are beautifully fragile, yet portray a sense of strength and caution.

The American Cancer Society’s Altadena Relay for Life has been rescheduled to Aug. 14 and 15, and relocated to Farnsworth Park, according to race organizers (it was previously May 15-16 at Loma Alta Park).
Says John C. Pings, one of the race organizers, the rescheduling has greatly increased participation — but just because the race has been delayed, doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of activities until then:

The staged reading of “Surprise Valley”, a play about Western writer and Altadenan Zane Grey, brought in $4,500 for renovation and expansion of the Altadena LIbrary on May 1.
“Surprise Valley,” an original play by Mary Casey, was performed by the Moveable Theater Company at the Zane Grey Estate as a fundraiser for Friends of the Altadena Library and the new Altadena Library Foundation, the fundraising arm for the library’s planned expansion.

Two items from Pasadena Unified School District:
- Early returns show that a thin majority approved Measure CC, the parcel tax measure that would provide some emergency funding for PUSD schools. However, a two-thirds majority is required to pass the measure, a gap that is unlikely to be met in the final stages of counting. PUSD press release here.

We're catching up with all kinds of late things, but had several inquiries about this one: at about 7:16 PM May 3, there was an auto accident at about the corner of New York Dr. and Catalina, according to CHP officer Ming Hsu. Patrolmen are saying that it was caused by an intoxicated driver,

Deputies were called in to a stabbing at the 2600 block of N. Fair Oaks at 10:15 last night.
According to LA Sheriff Lt. Sheila Sanchez, the victim was a male adult Hispanic who was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital and released after being treated for minor injuries. A suspect in the incident has not been identified. Altadena detectives are investigating.

The Battle for Mt. Wilson — the extraordinary effort of firefighters to save the historic observatory and communication towers from the wrath of the Station Fire last summer– was recounted Wednesday night by one who was there.
Dave Jurasevich, superintendent of the Mt. Wilson Observatory, spoke to a full house at the Sierra Club’s monthly meeting at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center Wednesday night. The fire — which Jurasevich said took out one third of the Angeles National Forest —

This humorous memoir tells the story of three farm boys who, after their shooting prank demolishes a mail box, blunder into a runaway adventure from upper state New York to California to escape the feds whom they are sure are on their trail.

Looking for opinions on the new look: for body copy — serif (i.e. a Times Roman type) or sanserif (i.e. Helvetica type)? Sanserif is cleaner looking, but serif-ed is actually easier to read. We went to serif-ed type today, just to see what it looks like, and aren't sure. What's your opinion?

LA’s premiere bicycling spokes-man, Ted Rogers, a friend of this blog since before we could legally drive, is peddling an LA County political action organization so cyclists can, uh, “wheel”-d some political muscle:

It’s not hard to have a big influence on local elections. In fact, only 17.9% of registered voters — slightly more than 285,000 people — cast ballots in the last election for Mayor of Los Angeles.

The Altadena Children’s Choir will be performing an original production of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book” this weekend at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Morrison Hall, 1757 N. Lake, Pasadena. Tickets are $10, $5 for students and seniors, and kids 12 and under are free. Saturday’s performance is at 7 PM, and Sunday at 4 PM. This performance is supported in part with funds from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation.
