Attention Parents! The Altadena Arts Council is offering an opportunity to brighten up your child’s summer vacation days by providing them a fun, very affordable, educational arts experience at the “Creative Summer Arts Discovery Workshops”.
The workshops will provide a creative experience that encourages imaginations while developing sound art skills. Students discover new ways to see and express a world of both form and fantasy.

Adam Bell of the Central Altadena Little League reports:
The Bowling Night Fundraiser at 300 Pasadena on Tuesday, June 1st, was a resounding success! So far, the Altadena Sheriff and the Central Altadena Little League (CALL) have raised $4,100. A great time was had by all and it was truly a pleasure to witness the deputies working with the kids. The kids are still talking about it.

Trail man Paul Ayers writes that the gate is finally open on Chaney Trail and people can drive to the Millard Campground parking lot (we haven't checked this out yet ourselves).
Also, District Ranger Mike McIntyre says that anyone interested in the trails of the Cobb Estate should meet at the gate at 8 AM Saturday.

Just added to the calendar: Odyssey Charter School is holding its pancake breakfast/rummage sale/book sale this Sat., May 15, with rummage sale starting at 8 and pancakes at 8:30. The annual fundraiser will be held at the school, 725 W. Altadena Dr.

The omnipresent Bill Westphal tipped me off on Tuesday about lots of activity around the stage area and in the amphitheater in Farnsworth Park. So, I high tailed it up there yesterday and snapped the attached photo.
I am very impressed with the work that Parks & Recreation has done in the final phase of their improvements to the amphitheater.

Earlier this week, the County Board of Supervisors approved a 35 mph speed limit to
the stretch of Lincoln Ave. between the Pasadena city limits and Loma Alta Dr.
The reason, they said in a press release, was to “enhance public safety.” But the speed limit is 30 mph now. Where’s the safety?
The answer is it now means greater enforcement of speed laws by the California Highway Patrol,

The Friends of the Altadena Library present the first annual “Art on Millionaire’s Row” festival on Sat., June 5, from 10 AM-6 PM. Besides art on display and for sale (including an juried art exhibit), there will be food by many local restaurants, including Amy’s Patio Cafe, Bill’s Chicken, Bulgarini Gelato, Martin’s BBQ, the Park Bench Deli, Coffee Gallery, and more. There will be four races in the Altadena Town Council election June 5, with an equal number of sitting incumbents running unopposed.
In Census Tract 4601, incumbent Gino Sund will be running against Dwight A. Equitz. In Census Tract 4602, incumbent Okorie Ezieme will face off against Brian Fuller. For CT 4610, incumbent Tecumseh Shackelford will face Brent Musson and perennial candidate Rev. CR Tillman. CT 4613 will have Diane Marcussen taking on incumbent Susan Goldman.

Yesterday I, along with two of Mr. Antonovich's deputies, met with the officials at Public Works who manage the trash hauling contracts for the County. The purpose was to get a update on the status of Altadena and to insure that the elements in our franchise agreement are the same as what was previously presented.

This was yesterday afternoon’s early bird member’s only opening of the Friends of the Altadena Library’s annual book sale. The sale is going on today and tomorrow, with lots of books, and pick up a Friends of the Library membership if you can.
The county hazardous materials roundup was also going on this morning, at 232 W. Mountain View Ave, and will continue thru 3 PM this afternoon.

Altadena resident and composer Sarah O’Brien will be hosting a fundraiser on June 6 at Siem Reap Cuisine in Long Beach.
The event will include a 6-course dinner, traditional Cambodian dance and music, and a presentation from Sarah’s new musical “Winds of Angkor“.
Proceeds will enable local artists to attend the Cambodian Youth Arts Festival in Phnom Penh this summer, where highlights from the musical will be presented to the public for the first time.

Well, the solons of Pasadena agreed to keep the Fork in the Road — on the road until May, and now there’s talk of removing it. Bob Stane of the Coffee Gallery Backstage, the man behind the Fork, will be on Channel 4 at 6 PM tonight to discuss the fate of the giant utensil. Bob emails:

LA county has announced the times of the summer beach bus from Altadena to Santa Monica.
The bus will run June 22 to Sept. 6 on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturday, and Labor Day.
Pickup starts at 9:15 AM at Lincoln & Ventura, with arrival at Santa Monica by 11 AM. Pickup from Santa Monica is at 3:30 PM, with dropoffs starting in Altadena at 4:15 PM.

While it opened last week, the Pasadena Unified School District’s student art show, “No Boundaries,” will be on exhibit thru the end of the month at the Shops on Lake in Pasadena:
The more than 400 artworks displayed in this exhibit were created by kindergarten through twelfth grade students from all twenty-nine schools in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD). No Boundaries showcases the best student work without limits to the size or media used.

Two Altadena women are among the 25 individuals who will be honored July 16 at the 11th Annual Women in Business Legislative Update and Awards luncheon. Sen. Carol Liu and Assemblymember Anthony Portantino will host the event at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel.
The awards celebrate those who contribute to the greater good of the workforce through the advancement of business and the proliferation of new jobs while also serving as role models for their community and coworkers.

Received reports of a possible burglary at the 2200 block of Maiden Lane at about 12:30 this afternoon, which one witness said involved deputies with guns drawn. The sheriff’s station reports that suspects got away. Likewise a cropper on gardening equipment reported stolen shortly after on the 400 block of Punaho.

Thanks to reader Matt, we found out that there’ll be a lunch truck double-header at the Coffee Gallery on Friday. Yes, there are now so many gourmet taco trucks that they’re occupying the same place at the same time:

Educational Homestay Programs (EHP) is looking for families to host international students for the month of July. Site director Christine Christoff said that the majority of host families live in Altadena and Pasadena, and they’re always looking for more. This year students from France, Italy, Russia and Spain will be looking for host families. Check the flier for more information.
