La Cañada Presbyterian Church and non-profit organization Clothes the Deal are holding a unique event this Sunday, “Suit Yourself Day,” where where anyone can donate a suit and in turn enjoy an afternoon of fun.
Clothes the Deal partners with over 85 social service agencies to distribute over 15,000 articles of business clothing to over 6,000 job seekers annually.

There will be two races in the June town council election, and several familiar faces are returning unopposed.
In Census Tract 4602, councilman Greg Middleton will be running for election against Rebecca Haussling. Middleton, who was appointed to fill the seat after the resignation of former councilman Herbert Simmons, is actually running for the first time.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory invites the public to its annual Open House on Sat., May 14, and Sun., May 15, from 9 AM. to 5 PM. The event,

From San Gabriel Valley Mosquita & Vector Control District:
A dead crow collected by the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control District has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). This is the first indication of WNV activity in Los Angeles County this year. The crow was collected Tuesday near the corner of San Bernardino Road and Azusa Canyon Road in the City of West Covina.
Warmer temperatures provide ideal conditions for WNV amplification and transmission.

The St. Elizabeth Parish School junior high is performing “Annie Get Your Gun” over the next two weekends. Amy Aghajanian stars as Annie Oakley in the Irving Berlin classic, with performances Sat. May 14 at 7 PM, Sun. May 15 at 2 PM, Fri. May 20 at 7 PM, and Sat. May 21 at 7 PM.

Every year, the Los Angeles County Peace Officer Memorial Torch Run — a race of sheriff’s deputies and other officers, carrying a torch to remember their fallen comrades — ends at Altadena Station.

The National Forest Service says that about half of the areas closed due to the Station Fire will be re-opened Monday, May 16.
According to a release from the Forest Service, about 98,000 acres will be reopened, including hiking trails and popular campgrounds. Specific areas include Indian Canyon Trailhead,

Dave Melrose has found that, when the going gets tough, it’s good to have friends.
Especially great friends, like he has.
Melrose is struggling with gastro-intestinal stomal tumors (GIST), a form of cancer that was diagnosed about two years ago. It’s tough and not easy to treat. In fact, it was treated once and came back. So his friends are throwing a benefit in Altadena with some big names to help pay for his cancer treatments.

… the bookhounds, that is, as the Altadena Library opens up its “pre-sale” for Friends of the Library members Friday afternoon.
Library insiders tell us that it’s usually book dealers who are lined up and crash through the doors at the 3 PM opening. We suspect it’s true — lots of people with big bags, rolling carts, and even a few handheld devices that were scanning bar codes and ISBN numbers as they picked through the boxes of books.

Power went out to Eastside neighborhoods last night around 11:30 PM. We've had reports of one, possibly two, transformers blowing up around Roosevelt and Glen Canyon, and over 700 homes affected. The Edison website is estimating that full power will be restored about 1 PM Saturday.

This guy moved into the neighborhood recently. We hear him most nights when he’s hunting from his favorite spot near Glenrose and Palm. My husband snagged this shot of him last night. The barn owl must have spotted something interesting because the shot has a 2 second exposure, and you can see he barely moved a feather. We think he’s a handsome addition to the neighborhood.

Bill Burnett lets us know he is doing a special songwriting workshop at the Coffee Gallery Monday night (tomorrow). After presenting a few songs of his own, he’ll open up the room to a songwriting discussion. Just seven days into the San Gabriel Valley’s Mosquito & Vector Control District’s annual helicopter surveillance program, the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito & Vector Control reports a 52% increase in the number of neglected swimming pools spotted from the air compared to last year’s record numbers.
“We’re finding nearly 23 stagnant swimming pools per hour compared with just 13 pools per hour in 2010” said Steve West, General Manager of the District.

Born Eleanor Cumi Burckett in 1918 in Harrisonville, Missouri, Cue MacKenzie died May 5th, 2011. Cue was the first child of Daisy and Howard Burckett, followed by three sisters and one brother, and later on by two half-sisters.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department has announced a new local crime mapping system for the 42 cities and 130 unincorporated communities that it polices.
“People want to know what is going on in their communities,” said Sheriff Lee Baca. “By making crime information easier for the public to access, the public is better able to partner with us to prevent crime.”
Once on the www.Crimemapping.com site, users can “filter” crimes from a list of law enforcement agencies that provide data to the site,

“Save King Dave” was a marathon 12 hour long fundraiser held Saturday to help pay for
Dave Melrose’s cancer treatments, and by all accounts, it was a lot of fun in a good cause. Our Gary Altadena was there, and this is what he saw:

Just received word from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department that homicide detectives are en route to Chantry Flats Campground in the Angeles National Forest to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a man.
The victim was a white man, who was discovered about 5:40 PM tonight.

Almost two years later, anger remains about the National Forest Service’s handling of Station Fire’s early hours, and now those who were affected by the fire are continuing to be angered at the slow pace of the investigation into answers.
That was the mood of the crowd at Congressman Adam Schiff’s Station Fire Update meeting Thursday morning at the Altadena Library.

The top performers at the Coffee Gallery coffeehouse showed up for a benefit performance last night at Altadena Community Church. The benefit was to collect enough money for the coffeehouse to pay the onerous county entertainment license fee.

A 10-year-old boy on a bicycle walked away after being struck by a car Thursday night.
According to Officer Ming-Yang Hsu of the California Highway Patrol, the non-injury collision occured at the intersection of Glenrose Avenue and Poppyfields Drive shortly after 6 PM. The boy and the driver of the car, 76, are both Altadena residents.
According to Hsu, the initial investigation shows that both were traveling southbound on Glenrose Avenue. As they entered the intersection with Poppyfields,

Catching up: Vernon Fisher, 38, of Altadena, has been named as a second suspect in the slaying of Pasadenan Donnell Taylor in January. Steven Wright, 32, also of Altadena, is already in custody for the murder. All involved were members of the Altadena Block Crips gang. I live at the corner of Palm Street and Olive Ave and it is not even a secluded spot.I got a rude surprise this [Thursday] morning. Someone dumped at least two trash cans worth of construction debris on the side of my house. This is a busy intersection and a very narrow street, yet some jerk was too lazy to take it to a dump or put it in their trash.
