Altadena Sheriff’s Station honors Deputy David Larimer, Who Died in the Line of Duty on Christmas Eve, 1941

The weather on Christmas Eve 1941 reflected the mood of the people in Los Angeles County. It was dreary, dark and filled with uncertainty. Less than three weeks before, the Japanese Imperial Navy smashed the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor. Now, even sharing the daily weather forecast with the public was prohibited by a nervous War Department that feared that the enemy might use this knowledge to launch an attack against the West Coast. Cars moved slowly through the early evening darkness made more extreme by newly-imposed wartime blackout laws. Even Altadena’s famous Christmas Tree Lane was ordered into darkness for the first time in twenty-one years.
On this most uncertain of all Christmas Eves, when the promise of peace on earth and goodwill to men never seemed more remote, Altadena Deputy David Stout Larimer and his longtime partner Benjamin Davis were patrolling on Colorado Boulevard just west of Rosemead Boulevard. 6:28 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 2200 block of E. Crary Street. Suspect(s) entered the residence by shattering the window. Suspects described as (2) male, Whites, 20 years old. Property Stolen: jewelry box containing miscellaneous jewelry. On-going investigation.
6:30 PM – A vehicle burglary occurred in the 600 block of W. Mendocino Street. Suspect(s) entered the vehicle by prying the door lock. Property Stolen: Macbook, Sony camera, hammer drill.
8:00 PM – Amber Haynes, 35 years old of Altadena was arrested in the 200 block of Crosby Street for domestic violence.

Take Holiday Guests to “Altadena in the Rose Parade” Exhibit at Community Center
“We have added Saturday hours to make it easier for area residents and their holiday houseguests to visit our exhibit, ‘Altadena in the Rose Parade,’ at the Community Center,” said Historical Society President Jane Brackman.
“We will be open from 2-4 p.m. on Saturdays through Jan. 16 to accommodate people who can’t come in during our weekday hours, and also those who are visiting the area for the big parade and football game.”
The Historical Society’s archives and new museum corridor are also open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, and by appointment for groups.
The Historical Society exhibit is in the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Drive, 91001.
“Altadena in the Rose Parade” is an extensive display of vintage and recent photographs, documents, newspaper articles and memorabilia about Altadena’s 70 years of participation in Pasadena’s Rose Parade.

12:05 PM – A vehicle was reported stolen in the area of Maiden Lane and Mendocino Street. The vehicle was recovered at 1:30 pm in the 1100 block of Marcheta Street.

The Links Kick Off Holiday Season with Sold-Out Holiday Jazz Brunch
The Pasadena-Altadena Chapter of the Links, Incorporated helped kick off the 2015 Holiday Season with a rousing holiday jazz brunch “Christmas with the Links” on Sunday December 6, 2015 in Paseo Colorado’s Noor Ballroom.
The sold-out affair, which raised $30K, featured greetings by Chapter President, Yvonne Hill, followed by a warm welcome from event co-chairs Charmayne Mills-Ealy, Faye Davidson, and Dr. Karen Guinn Radley. Cheryl Myers, chapter Vice President gave a summary of the current initiatives along with highlighting its impact on the local community for the past 52 years.
After shopping several trendy local vendors, and noshing on the superb brunch, guests were enthralled by former chapter scholarship recipient, Morgan Duff Tucker. She gave a heartwarming speech where she recounted how the Links scholarship enabled her to have funds for her personal educational needs while attending and later graduating in 2013 from USC.

Altadena Library District Presents Paying for College: Finandial Aid and Scholarship Workshop
Altadena Library is sponsoring a workshop, Paying for College: Financial Aid and Scholarships, on Monday January 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room.
Affording a college education is a challenge for most families these days. Learn about financial aid and scholarships from the perspective of a college admissions office at our free workshop with Ashley Sim, former admissions officer at Caltech. She will discuss common misconceptions, types of aid available, and questions all parents and students should be asking the financial aid offices of colleges they are considering.
Ashley Sim is an educational consultant who provides individualized academic advising and college and law school admissions counseling to students and parents. A graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School, she has worked in college admissions for more than 15 years as an alumni admissions representative of Stanford and as the Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions at the California Institute of Technology.
