Altadena Deputies Nab Sexual Assault Suspect

Patrol Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s, Altadena station worked every angle to positively identify and arrest a suspect responsible for several sexual assaults along the Lake Avenue corridor of Altadena.

On April 15, 2016, a victim was touched inappropriately and a suspect was ultimately arrested. The suspect is being held in custody and awaiting a jury trial. Altadena patrol deputies worked closely with detectives and the victim of this most recent assault to positively identify the suspect. The suspect was also subsequently linked with at least five other incidents.

Over the past seven months the Lake Ave. corridor in Altadena has experienced several incidents of sexual battery, (inappropriate touching). Investigators believe there may be unreported victims. Investigators are seeking any additional victims that may have been touched inappropriately within the nearby community, and have not reported the incident to police.

Bird Walk and Habitat Restoration at Rubio Canyon

Saturday, May 14th, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Rubio Canyon Nature Preserve

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty with a day of birding and habitat restoration.

Join the Pasadena Audubon Society and the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy at Rubio Preserve on May 14th. This is an all ages event (but please, no dogs). There will be a bird walk from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., and then help restore Rubio Canyon’s bird habitat by either removing invasive plants or planting native plants from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Wear clothes that you are okay getting dirty, sturdy shoes, and a hat. Organizers ask that participants bring a refillable water bottle and sunscreen. Water and light snacks will be provided.

“Whether you’ve been birding for years or just want to learn who is visiting your backyard feeders, we welcome anyone with a love for our feathered friends.”

Friends of the Sierra Madre Library’s 54th Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair

The 54th Annual Sierra Madre Art Fair, sponsored by the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, will be held in Memorial Park, 222 West Sierra Madre Blvd., on Saturday, May 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Fair this year is in honor and remembrance of Nancy Doyle, who was a long-time member of the Exhibits Committee and also a much accomplished and very talented artist who participated in the Art Fair for over 20 years!

Seventy-five artists, including 18 newly juried, will display and sell their works of art. Mediums include oil paintings, jewelry, watercolors, glass, wood, metal, wearable art, photography, pottery, ceramics, mixed media and weaving. The Art Fair will be the perfect place to treat mom to a wonderful Mother’s Day gift or to buy upcoming graduation and wedding gifts, as well as to purchase pieces for your own enjoyment.

The Featured Artist this year is Sarah Moore.

Altadena Sheriff’s Deputies Find Stolen Car, Arrest Driver

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies from the Altadena Station,searching for a stolen vehicle reportedly driving in northeast Altadena around 4 p.m., found the car and arrested the driver.

Pasadena Police had received the report and put up a police helicopter.

When they requested assistance, Altadena deputies searched throughout west Altadena for the stolen vehicle, and soon located the vehicle on Lincoln Avenue and Acacia Street.

A felony traffic stop was made and Lincoln Avenue north of Woodbury was shut down for a short period of time.

The 27-year-old male driver was arrested driving a 2015 Jaguar stolen in La Crescenta. Lincoln Avenue is now open.

County Supervisor Candidates Debate in Pasadena

Five Republicans, one Democrat, discuss 710, homelessness, and water use

The six candidates vying to replace termed-out LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich in the Fifth District, met for a live Internet-streaming debate at Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church Monday evening. The Fifth District, over two thousand square miles in area, includes all or part of the San Gabriel, Pomona, San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys.

Antonovich has held the office since 1980.

The evening, hosted by the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters, and moderated by KABC-TV’s Marc Brown, featured candidates Kathryn Barger, Antonovich’s former Chief of Staff; Gang Prosecutor Elan Carr, LA City Councilmember Mitchell Englander, Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff, Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian, and public policy executive Darrell Park.

Five of the candidates for the non-partisan office are Republican, while candidate Park is a Democrat.

Given only an hour for the debate, the candidates were given two rounds of questions from the panel of moderators.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Encourages Residents to be Prepared for Distasters on the One-Year Anniversary of the Nepal Earthquake

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck central Nepal. Within hours of the April 25, 2015, earthquake, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) deployed a 136-person Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) comprised of 22 USAID disaster experts and two urban search and rescue (USAR) teams from Los Angeles County and Fairfax County, Virginia. Twelve search dogs also accompanied the DART.

Since 1988, USAID has deployed USAR teams abroad 16 times for disaster assistance, with only a 72-hour window to quickly rescue trapped victims from precarious situations before they succumb to dehydration or further injury.

Five days after the tremor initially hit, USAR teams pulled a 15-year-old boy out of the rubble in north Kathmandu. After a large aftershock, USAR specialists from the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) also rescued a 41-year-old woman from a collapsed four-story building in the remote village of Singati. During its deployment, USAR team members provided triage and much-needed medical treatment to dozens of survivors.
