High Winds Prompt Safety Measures at Pasadena Unifed Schools

High Winds Prompt Safety Measures at Pasadena Unifed Schools

STAFF REPORT

The Pasadena Unified School District is evaluating unfolding wind events on Tuesday and may use a modified “rainy day” schedule in response to a High Wind Warning and Dust Advisory issued by the National Weather Service for the San Gabriel Valley.

The weather alert, covering January 7-8, 2025, has prompted the District to consider schedule modifications affecting recess, lunch, and physical education. Students and staff should follow regular drop-off and pick-up procedures at the school while using additional caution.

“We are monitoring conditions to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff,” Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D., said in a statement to the School District community.

District administrators will continue to monitor the situation overnight and through the next couple of days, with plans to keep the School District community informed of any changes.

The modified scheduling represents a precautionary measure as the District works to ensure student and staff safety during the weather advisory period.

Forecast of Potentially Dangerous Wind Storm Prompts Emergency Alerts From City of Pasadena

STAFF REPORT

The City of Pasadena has issued an emergency alert for severe winds and heightened fire danger expected to impact the area from Tuesday, January 7, through Wednesday, January 8.

Strong winds, ranging from 30 to 50 mph with widespread gusts between 60 to 80, with isolated gusts between 80 to 100 mph are possible, the City said in a statement.

Pasadena emergency officials are urging the community to take steps now to ensure their safety.

Combined with dry conditions, the winds may create hazardous situations, including an increased risk of wildfires, downed trees, and power outages.

The City’s emergency response departments have mobilized in advance of the dangerous conditions.

“The Pasadena Fire, Police, Water and Power, and Public Works Departments are on heightened alert and ready to respond to any emergencies related to the high winds,” City officials announced. “Crews are conducting pre-storm assessments of trees, utility lines, and roadways to minimize potential hazards.”

LA County to Use Gender-Inclusive Language in Drafting County Codes

LA County to Use Gender-Inclusive Language in Drafting County Codes

By ANUSHA SHANKAR, City News Service

The County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a motion calling for the use of gender-inclusive language in the County Code, calling it a modernization effort to cater to a diverse population.

The Los Angeles County Code is a compilation of ordinances which have been codified for over a century. Supervisor Lindsay Horvath noted in a motion that it includes gendered terms in some ordinances, referring to county officers and employees as “he” in several sections.

“While the county has become more diverse, inclusive, and equitable, the County Code contains a significant number of archaic, inappropriate references to gender and gendered terms,” Horvath said.

“Language written in 1942 `constructs gender’ as `the masculine gender includes the feminine and neuter genders.”‘

She stressed that the board was the current caretaker of the County Code and it was responsible for modernizing and bringing the code up to date.

The other supervisors agreed with Horvath,

November 2024 Proclaimed Native American Heritage Month in LA County

November 2024 Proclaimed Native American Heritage Month in LA County

The County Board of Supervisors Tuesday officially proclaimed November as Native American Heritage Month.

The board also asked the County CEO and the Department of Arts and Culture to determine the feasibility of establishing an Office of Tribal Affairs in the 2025-26 budget.

“This month serves not only as a celebration but also as a vital opportunity for education, reflection, and action,” according to a motion introduced by Supervisors Hilda Solis and Lindsey Horvath. “… By recognizing their narratives, we bring attention to the rich tapestry of cultural practices, languages, and wisdom that have shaped our nation.”

Los Angeles is home to numerous First Peoples, including the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh, and Chumash, as well as the area’s American Indian and Alaska Native population, with members from more than 200 tribes, according to the motion.

“By designating this month, we honor the resilience and creativity of Native Americans who have enriched our society through their art, leadership, and cultural practices.”

Proposed West San Gabriel Valley Plan Sparks Debate in Altadena

Proposed West San Gabriel Valley Plan Sparks Debate in Altadena

STAFF REPORT

The proposed West San Gabriel Valley Area Plan (WSGVAP), set for a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors vote on December 10, has ignited controversy among Altadena residents. The comprehensive long-range policy document aims to guide future growth and development in nine unincorporated communities, including Altadena, but some fear it could radically alter the area’s character.

“From what I can tell, there’s H five zones, H 18 zones, H 30 zones. This is 30 units on the corner of Altadena Drive and Lincoln. We’re going to have huge apartments going up. You’re talking about traffic deaths. You’re going to be looking at a lot of increased traffic, increased danger to pedestrians,” said resident Alan Zorthian during public comment at the Tuesday, Oct. 15 Altadena Town Council meeting.

The plan, developed by Los Angeles County, would establish new land use and zoning designations across Altadena, East Pasadena-East San Gabriel, Kinneloa Mesa, La Crescenta-Montrose, San Pasqual, South Monrovia Islands,
