Foothill Municipal Water District (Foothill MWD or District) urges its residents to not waste water and to periodically check for leaks around the home.  A leaking faucet can waste over 100 gallons of water per week and a leaky toilet can waste over 100 gallons of water per day!  An easy and effective way to reduce home water waste is by immediately repairing leaky faucets and toilets.

Residents can also use their water meters to check for hidden house leaks.  Here is a tip: Read the house water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used.  If the meter does not read exactly the same, then there is a leak!

Foothill MWD offers these additional tips to help reduce indoor water use:

  • Take shorter showers.  Cutting a daily shower by 5 minutes can save over 200 gallons of water per month.
  • Wash produce in a bowl of water instead of running water.  When finished use the water for irrigation of plants.
  • Plug the bathtub before turning the water on and then adjust the temperature as the tub fills.
  • Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator instead of running water.
  • Run the clothes washer or dishwasher only when full.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Consider replacing appliances with high efficiency models that reduce water and energy use.

The District encourages residents to take advantage of high efficiency toilet and clothes washer rebates currently offered through SoCal Water$mart.  High efficiency toilet rebates are now being offered at $100!  Please visit www.socalwatersmart.com or www.fmwd.com/conservation.aspx to learn more.  Residents and businesses must prequalify for rebates prior to starting any work.

Foothill Municipal Water District provides imported water to Crescenta Valley Water District, La Cañada Irrigation District, Mesa Crest Water Company, Valley Water Company, Lincoln Avenue Water Company, Las Flores Water Company and Rubio Cañon Land & Water Association.  Kinneloa Irrigation District, another retail agency, takes no water from Foothill.
