By adhering to the following traffic safety tips, the number of accidents in and around school zones can be reduced:
- Motorists should be aware that large groups of children will be on the sidewalks and crossing streets before and after school and many do not pay attention to vehicular traffic.
- Motorists need to be extra alert for sudden movements into the roadway by young people riding bicycles or walking to and from neighborhood schools.
- Parents and drivers are encouraged to allow sufficient time to drive their children to school and not to double park to allow passengers to exit the vehicle.
- Drivers should avoid any activity that distracts them while driving, e.g., adjusting the radio, talking on a cell phone, texting, or eating and drinking.
- Parents are urged to talk with their children and discuss the importance of crossing the roadway at marked intersections or within crosswalks.
- Parents are reminded that bicycle riders under the age of 18 are required by law to wear helmets.
Please do your part in making sure this school year is a positive one. Understand and follow these tip, and please notify the Altadena Station if you observe any potential safety hazards.
