There is something for everyone in July at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St. You do not have to be a member to attend. Some events require advance reservations as noted.

  • Stay Connected with Social Media – Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 1 to 31, from 9 to 11 a.m. Learn how to keep in touch with family and friends via email, Skype, Facebook and other forms of social media during a 30-minute, one-on-one meeting with an instructor. You’ll choose which applications you want to learn. Bring a laptop or use one of the onsite computers. If you have an email address, bring it and your password. Sign up with Edison at the Welcome Desk.
  • Memory Games Group – Wednesdays, July 2 to 23, at 10 a.m. Exercise your brain and enhance your short-term memory with this fun and engaging group. Stimulating memory games will get your brain going! Space is limited and reservations are required by calling 626-685-6755.
  • Cardmaking Workshop – Monday, Monday, July 7, from noon to 2 p.m. Surprise a special someone with a personalized, handmade greeting card. Whether it’s happy birthday, thank you, thinking of you or any other sentiment, you’ll create a decorative card in your own unique style and have fun discovering your creativity while workshop leaders help you bring your ideas to life. All materials will be provided.
  • Dental Issues – Thursday, July 10, at noon. Learn about common oral health issues experienced by aging adults and the range of services provided to low-income seniors by the Michael D. Antonovich Dental Clinic at the Pasadena Public Health Department as well as changes in Denti-Cal, which restored some adult benefits as of May 1, 2014. A boxed lunch will be served to the first 50 people with confirmed reservations. Presented by Dr. Soulema of the Michael D. Antonovich Dental Clinic.
  • Friday Movie Matinees – Fridays, June 11 and 18, at 1 p.m. Movies can take us to other places and times like nothing else. July 11: “Frozen” (2013, PG) with the voices of Kristin Bell, Idina Menzel and Jonathon Groff; July 18: “The Way We Were” (1973) starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford.
  • On the Move Riders Club – Thursday, July 17, at 10 a.m. Learn how seniors can participate in this special travel club that goes to popular destinations and points of interest using public transportation throughout Metro bus and subway service areas, plus helpful tips and information about TAP cards. Presented by Lilly Ortiz of Metro.
  • Health Fair – Friday, July 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. Glucose, blood pressure and hearing screenings are among the servicers offered. Health fairs take place the third Friday of every month. (626) 685-6732.
  • Understanding and Managing Arthritis – Thursday, July 24, at 10 a.m. Learn principle guidelines for managing arthritis to make daily activities easier and get the facts about arthritis medication, surgery and natural therapies. Presented by Dr. Shylaja Rachabattula, Huntington Medical Foundation.
  • Book Club at the Center – Friday, July 25, at 1 p.m. Read “A Week in Winter” by Maeve Binchy and then join members of the Senior Center Book Club for a discussion. A woman decides to turn a decaying seaside Irish mansion into an inn against everyone’s advice. Readers will laugh and cry with guests and caretakers as they share their secrets and aspirations.   • Hearing Loss and Technology – Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. Learn about hearing loss, hearing aids, breakthroughs in technology and how new devices can optimize your hearing as you age. Presented by Ellen Simon, HEAR Center.

Founded in 1959, the Pasadena Senior Center is an independent, nonprofit organization that offers recreational, educational, wellness and social services to people ages 50 and over in a friendly environment. Services are also provided for frail, low-income and homebound seniors.
