from Pasadena NowInstruments and equipment stolen from Marshall Fundamental School’s Mighty Eagles Marching Band which prompted an outpouring of public support for the forlorn students were recovered Friday by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies recovered the equipment after they saw and chased a suspicious man rummaging through a Mercedes Benz station wagon in the 2800 block of East Colorado Boulevard about 9:30 p.m., a  Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy told local media.

Although the suspect got away, when deputies looked inside the car they saw instruments and equipment marked “Property of Pasadena School District.”

Deputies contacted the Pasadena police department to properly identify the items. It is unknown if all the stolen equipment has been recovered or how soon it can be returned to the school band. The loss had been valued at about $15,000.

UPDATE:  The deputies who recovered the instruments were from Altadena station.  From an LASD press release:

Pasadena Police Department responded to Marshall Fundamental School located at 900 Allen Ave, Pasadena, on Tuesday March 3, 2015 burglary report call. School officials discovered that various musical instrument had been stolen.

At approximately 9:10 PM, on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, Altadena Sheriff’s Station Deputies Collin Reddy and Kevin Villarreal saw a suspicious male Hispanic, described as 5’10 weight approximately 170 pounds, rummaging through a 2001 Mercedes Benz station wagon which was parked at the 2800 block of East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena.  They drove toward the man and asked him to walk toward them.  He suddenly began running eastbound on Colorado Boulevard then northbound on Sunnyslope Avenue, and out of view.  Deputies gave chase, but were unable to apprehend him.  A containment was established but the suspect was not located.

When the deputies looked inside the station wagon, they saw several musical cases and electronic equipment marked “Property of Pasadena School District, the deputies impounded the car and detectives are currently working the case. Detectives contacted Pasadena Police Department to identify the stolen items.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Yes, we notice the news story says the recovery was Friday, but the LASD says the recovery was Tuesday.  We’re trying to pin the timeline down.
