The LA Times has the story of Francisco Carbajal, 64. who was killed on Altadena Drive near Crestford last night at about 8 p.m. According to the Times, Carbajal was lying or had just fallen on the street when he was run over by a Chevy Astro van. The driver of the van, a 42-year-old Altadena man,

The JPL Cougar has been much in the news and the newsgroup discussions around town. First, the picture by Matthew Dickie and related story finally hit the high, mighty, and newsroom-gutted LA Times. Even tho’ the reporter said it was a large cat, consensus from those in the know say it was probably an adolescent, and not that big at all. And while the occasional pet is snatched,

One of my neighbors on Boulder Rd. called me last night to report that her daughter had observed a black van parked in front of their house yesterday with the occupants remaining inside for "a couple of hours". She went outside to get their license plate number at which time they drove off.

(Altadenablog has a friend, a resident of the home, who’s a little honked off about having to move to the Kensington for several years.) Gang activities are handled by a multi-agency Community Law Enforcement and Recovery (CLEAR) Gang Task Force. CLEAR task force consisted of two detectives each from Altadena Sheriff’s Station and Pasadena Police Dept., on LA County probation officer, and an assistant district attorney from LA County.

Received today from Supv. Antonovich’s press office:
To upgrade Altadena’s Fair Oaks Avenue, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved $400,000 in Economic Development Funds to provide facade improvement services to commercial buildings, announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich who initiated the request.
Alta/Pasa Community Improvement Center will provide the upgrade to commercial buildings along Fair Oaks Boulevard between Altadena Drive and West Woodbury Road in the unincorporated community of Altadena.

Lincoln Crossing minority partner (20%) Ray Carlisle got an earful from his tenants at Monday’s county meeting regarding the troubled project. Leaks and flooding, sewage odors, and a rent increase with a cherry on top. Bad news is plentiful — Bessie’s Daughter’s Soulful Tacos, an Altadenablog favorite, is shutting down, at least temporarily, because of the odor problem,

The latest news about our troubled shopping center says that a Superior Court judge has ordered Lincoln Crossing LLC (jointly owned by Dorn Platz and West Altadena Development Corp.) to pay its concrete contractor $311,000 owed on the project. In addition, the judge upholds a lien against the property, meaning the owners may have to sell it to pay off GBC Concrete and Masonry Construction,

A Superior Court judge in San Francisco is mulling over dropping conspiracy charges in the San Francisco Eight case (now down to seven defendants). The SF 8, former members of the Black Liberation Army, are accused of killing San Francisco police officer John Young in 1971. Altadenans Ray Boudreaux, 65, and Henry Jones, 72, remain charged with murder in Young’s death.

There will be a joint meeting of the Altadena Town Council and the PUSD School Board on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Eliot Middle School. This meeting follows a successful Nov. 13 joint meeting between the Pasadena City Council and the Pasadena School Board. A similar meeting will be held in Sierra Madre at a later time.

The Altadena main library hosts Violinist Paul Stein and Chamber Music Express, 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10. Stein and the Chamber Music Express blend music and imaginative storytelling, entertaining children and adults alike. The beauty and logic of music have much in common with math. The music of Mozart, Kreisler, and Brahms will share the program with gypsy music by Drdla and John Williams’ Harry Potter.

Pasadena Now reports that work on medians, curbs, and gutters will continue, which includes the Santa Rosa/Altadena Dr. intersection, until about Dec. 14. Work will be finished at 5 p.m. each day. This is not really an accommodation,

Inside Bay Area reports that seven former members of the Black Liberation Army, including Ray Boudreaux and Henry Jones of Altadena, will enter pleas next month in the 1971 murder of San Francisco police sergeant John Young.
According to Inside Bay Area:
All seven men are also facing charges of conspiracy to murder police officers for the attempted murder of four officers,

Altadenablog special science correspondent Bill Westphal forwards to us a note that a Delta II rocket carrying Italy’s COSMO-2 Earth imaging satellite is scheduled for launch from Vandenberg AFB Wednesday night at 18:31:39 PST, (or 6:31 p.m.) the start of a 1-second launch window. If the skies are clear and view unobstructed, you may get a good view of the launch.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Station showed off its new command post vehicle at Lincoln Crossing Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff Capt. Roosevelt Blow said that contributions from many community members and groups have refurbished and spiffed up the trailer, which made its public debut at Lincoln Crossing this week. While it’s now used for community outreach events, Blow said that eventually they hope to build in radio dispatch and computer capabilities so it can be a true mobile command station.

Trapping bears is illegal in California. Especially in a populated area. Especially near a children’s camp (Summerkids).
Department of Fish and Game was called. No idea who set the trap, but several people on the list have volunteered to take a stick and snap it shut.

Be more alert to suspicious persons or activities. If you witness suspicious activities, record as much information as possible like the incident below. Include vehicle license numbers if possible. Contact the Altadena Sheriff’s Station on 626-798-1131 and let them know.

Mallcraft of Altadena was one of the losing bidders to build Alga Norte Community Park in Carlsbad, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune. The winning bidder came about $10 million below Mallcraft’s $39 million bid. Since Carlsbad city engineers estimated that it would take about $39 million to build it, it’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out.
