Pasadena Star-News had a story yesterday about the fear of bear traps on the hiking trails in west Altadena, something we reported Dec. 12. Now, to date, nobody has actually come forward to say they’ve seen a trap — it all seems to be "friend of a friend" stuff — altho’ Chaney Trail newsgroup reports that some of the local raccoons are sporting injuries that would be consistent with being caught in a trap.

Arthur Pilavyan,33, of Altadena was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison in a scheme that defrauded Medicare out of more than $7 million. Pilavyan pleaded guilty to health care fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering for submitting fraudulent claims to Medicare. Medicare’s Most Wanted website (warning! music!) has the details.

Neighborhood newsgroups are buzzing about suspicious incidents (such as this one) of a gray car circling around the Glen Canyon/Berendo/Pepper Dr. area, apparently looking for freshly-delivered UPS packages.

An interesting article about the William Beard house in Altadena (1918 Meadowbrook Lane), designed by Richard Neutra: it used natural sunlight to create convection to heat and cool the all-metal house. An eco-house from 1934. Pity it never actually worked! (Get an artsy view of the house here.)

California Highway Patrol has assigned a fulltime officer to catch the speeders on the eastern side of Altadena Drive. Increased enforcement will start Jan. 2. Town Councilman Gino Sund sent a letter to his constituents on Dec. 27, which said:

assigned full time to Altadena.

We don’t have tiger attacks around here, but we do have coyotes. President Streets newsgroup reported a pack of four who were stalking a dog walker around 5:30 a.m. Thursday at Allen and Midwick or Meadowbrook (maybe they wanted to see the Balian Mansion lights). They or another pack just like them were also spotted on Harding between Canyon and Berendo,

PSN breaks the news today that Altadena Town Council chairman George Lewis was arrested Dec. 15 on suspicion of felony spousal abuse, allegedly following an alcohol-fueled run-in with an old girlfriend. The nut quote, from fellow councilman Steve Lamb, re: Lewis and his ex:

Thanks for posting info about the Mount Lowe excursion. What a great opportunity for those who have never been there. Lots of great history. There was even a fox farm near the Mt. Lowe Tavern. It used to be on the side of the hill near the short road to Inspiration Point. You can still see some remnants of posts and fencing.

Several reports from the newsgroups that sheriff’s cars zipped into the parking lot at the Lincoln Avenue McDonald’s at about 4 p.m. on Halloween and deputies emerged with guns drawn. Four juveniles were cuffed in the incident. Apparently there was a fight, and someone reported seeing a gun, altho’ no gun was found, according to someone who talked to the sheriff.
Altadenablog just doesn’t go there anymore because we were tired of always getting hit up for change by Muir high school students —

Well, Halloween’s over, the Braeburn Boneyard is being dismantled, and it’s already time for the snows of Christmas …
Yes, we’re still dealing with weather in the ’80’s, but thanks to the joy of Hollywood special effects, this house on Mendocino is enjoying a fresh coat of artificial snow for whatever-it-is they’re filming there (the production assistants weren’t talking to me).
On the other hand, up the street, this IS one of the signs of the season in Altadena: the Balians are stringing up their Christmas lights,

A lot of people showed up to the Pasadena Police Department’s open house on its Windsor Ave. helipad in Altadena. Besides a chance to look at the police copters, there were free drinks and hot dogs and a presentation about modern police helicopter technology in the hanger.

Ok, that was the most strained headline of our career. Bill Westphal, the camera guy, tells us that:
Comet Holmes, normally only visible with the aid of telescopes, has suddenly become brighter after emitting a large dust cloud. Now usually somewhat visible with the naked eye, it is definitely visible with binoculars.
To find the comet, go outside a couple of hours after sunset and face between north and northeast.

Pasadena Star-News reports that K. Harrington, Tom Hubbard, and David Datz are in the lead for positions on the library board. Datz is only 42 votes ahead of Mark A. Mariscal (which makes 20% vs. 18% of the vote). Good news for Tom, way ahead with 881 votes, who actually campaigned for his seat!

Word from USFS Public Affairs Officer Sherry Rollman is that the Angeles National Forest closure will be lifted Thurs., Nov. 8. San Bernardino and Los Padres will also re-open Thursday, and Cleveland on Saturday. Fire conditions are still "extreme," and all prior fire restrictions will remain in effect.

Save the Altadena Trails (STAT) reports that trial will begin Nov. 21 in a county lawsuit against the La Vina Homeowners Association. The county is trying to enforce the original developer’s agreement to provide public trails in the open spaces around the La Vina development.
Yes, Nov.21 is the day before Thanksgiving. While that’s when the trial begins, witnesses are expected to start testimony Monday,

PSN reports today that Nia Educational Charter School has until Friday to present a recovery plan to PUSD, which claims that the school at the Edison Elementary building, 119 W. Palm, is on the edge of bankruptcy. A story by reporter Cortney Fielding says that Nia ended the last school year $41,999 in the red, and presently owes the district approximately $29,000 in lease payments,

The Lincoln Crossing development at Lincoln and Woodbury is also in deep trouble, according to PSN reports. The developer, Dorn Platz, just got hammered with a default notice from Los Angeles County, claiming that Dorn Platz has gathered a collection of attachments and creditor actions and "the potential exists for a judicial foreclosure action against the property."
