San Jose Mercury News' sportswritert Scott Herhold has a column about Altadena-based artist Michael Chukes. Chukes talks about how his athletic coaches at San Jose City College instilled in him the discipline and mental toughness that he uses as an artist. In fact, he will be presenting some scuptures to his old coaches at San Jose City College this week.

With a few gaps to fill, the Sheriff’s Support Group of Altadena (SSGA) has announced the dates and attractions for the 2009 Concert Series at Farnsworth Park amphitheater. This 13th annual series,
held on Saturdays through the summer, is still looking for sponsors for this key Altadena event.
This year’s schedule includes:
June 20: Susie Hansen (Latin dance band)
June 27: Downbeat Express (Altadena’s big band)
July 4: Patriotic concert,

Los Angeles County Parks & Recreation will present the third annual “Celebration of Unity” gospel music festival at Farnsworth Park on Sat., Feb. 21, 4-8 PM.
Local artists and bands will be featured on the amphitheater stage, as will dancing and spoken word performances. There will be vendors and refreshments available as well throughout the event. “Reign” will be the featured band of the event.
Admission is free.

Some newsgroup chatter and a couple of direct reports tell us that the latest flying object over Altadena is not a B-2, U-2, or UFO, but the Canada goose. Some of the more knowledgeable birders in town noticed Canadian geese honking their way over the foothills this morning.
Usually the geese range over the San Fernando Valley during their migration, so this is a little off the beaten path for them. Let’s be alert tomorrow and see if there are more —

Guest speaker is Dr. Ralph C. Watkins, Fuller Theological Seminar’s assistant dean for the African American Studies program. Performing will be the African Zimbabwe Choir, Billy Mitchell & Guests, Higher Learning, and more.

Today they twittered this address on their website, seeking information on Tommy Bowman, who was missing in Altadena — in 1957, and in all likelihood was the victim of a serial killer, altho' we may never know for sure,

Sheriff’s deputies check out a house at the 1300 block of Altadena Dr. at about 3:50 this afternoon. Deputies were dispatched to a call of a prowler in the neighborhood, and were investigating an open house. Four squad cars and the helicopter were called in.

We're working on a project with some other Altadena-area bloggers, which involves reserving picnic tables at Farnsworth Park for late March. So far, it's been an exercise in frustration — the buck has been passed to an 800 number, which is answered by a machine that tells us to call during office hours (which is when we call), and leave a message (which we do). Not that anyone calls back.

A couple of items that have entered our in-box:
Chantee Benefield’s art will be on display in the Altadena Main Library for the duration of Black History Month. The library’s hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m., Sundays. The library is at 600 E. Mariposa St., Altadena. And on Sat., Feb. 21, the Black History Parade will begin at 10 AM at Charles White Park in Altadena and end at Robinson Park in Pasadena.

KABC has a feature on their website about the billboard at Lincoln and Woodbury looking for info on the 2004 murder of Floyd Anthony Lofton on that corner. The board of supervisors has authorized a $10,000 reward in the case, and billboard space was donated by Clear Channel. Lofton left behind three young sons. (No idea what Jim's Burgers thinks of the sign ID'ing them as a murder location).

Andre Coleman of PWeekly follows up on his story of the tenants of the apartments on North Raymond. Twenty of the families have moved out as part of a settlement agreement — agreement to include that landlord Ahmad Nowaid would not report their evictions to credit agencies. Nowaid claimed that the tenants were not paying their rent —

The American Cancer Society is looking for volunteers and teams for the first ever Relay For Life in Altadena on June 6 –7 at Farnsworth Park.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer), remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer.

In this workshop, award-winning author Linda Weaver Clarke will describe her secrets of making ancestors come alive on paper by turning family history into a variety of written formats in both fiction and non-fiction.
Everyone has stories of themselves or ancestors that might be considered their family legacy.

Central Altadena Little League (CALL) will be extending sign ups and tryouts for its 2009 Baseball Season to Sat., January 24 and 31. Sign-ups and tryouts will be held at the lower baseball diamond at Farnsworth Park, Altadena (corner of Lake Ave. & Concha St.) from 9:00 AM to 1 PM. Tryouts are required for team placement for all players except for those in T-Ball.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept., Altadena Station, and the Altadena Sheriff's Community Advisory Committee (CAC) have announced that translation services will be available at the Parenting Forum on Jan. 27 at the Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Dr., 7-9 PM.
The Forum will help provide parenting information and identify resources available in the Altadena community.

PSN reports today that Jeanetta M. Standefor, 40, of Altadena, who operated Accelerated Funding Group (AFG), got a hefty fine and prison sentence for defrauding investors in a Ponzi scheme. Details are here.
