A planned burn from an area east of Mt. Wilson, from Mt. Waterman to Cogswell Reservoir, started Wednesday (yesterday), and was visible from the Mt. Wilson towercam last night (you can still see smoke this morning, and we could smell it in East Altadena).

And there will be a memorial for firefighers Tedmond Hall and Arnaldo Quinones at Dodger Stadium at 10 AM Saturday (click graphic for details).

Now that the Station Fire no longer endangers our hills, people are venturing out to see what's open, what's closed, and what still may be a danger spot.

Today, Monday, September 14, 2009, Eaton Canyon Natural Area Park  is finally open — with some parking limitations.

While the Park is open, the Nature Center continues to be closed on Mondays (except for holidays).

Portions of the upper parking lot will be closed until the last heavy equipment transporter exit the Park.

Pasadena Community College is in the process of creating a ten year Educational Master Plan.  The plan will be used to develop programs and direct resources in a manner that will allow the College to meet the future needs of students, employers and the community.  

A series of community meetings have been schedule to get community input.  There will be a meeting at the Altadena Community Center next Wednesday September 23rd beginning at 7:00 p.m.

• Pasadena Now reports that the school "has won the Los Angeles Regional Award in the 2009 Governor’s Challenge for 'outstanding efforts to promote fitness for students, parents and teachers.'"  The school won a $5,000 award for fitness equipment and a $1,000 gift card to CVS Pharmacy.

State Senator Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge), Assemblymember Paul Krekorian (D-Burbank) and Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) are pleased to announce the final 25 exceptional businesswomen from their respective districts whom they will honor at the 10th Annual Women in Business Legislative Update and Awards Luncheon set for Oct.

The Altadena NAACP will host a health fair on Sat. Sept. 26 10 AM-4 PM, at the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Dr.

There will also be panels and presentations on Alzeheimer's disease (10 AM), kidney disease and transplant presentations (12 PM), and AIDS/HIV (2 PM).

“Read for the Record” is a nationwide literacy awareness event, where readers from around the country try to set a world record for the number of people reading the same book on the same day.  The Altadena Library District will be one of many special events throughout the nation.

Karen’s Hallmark Shop, a cards/gifts/scrapbooking shop at 2450 N. Lake Suite A, started its going-out-of-business sale this week.  Co-owner Robert Myers, who with wife Karen runs the store, said that the shop started taking a downturn with the economy a year ago and never recovered. 

The failure of the store is “devastating,” Myers said, particularly in light of the fact that his wife is in the Webster family.
