Burglaries, businesses, the Fork, town council, graffiti — and oh yes, fire. Here’s our absolutely non-objective and highly opinionated look at Altadena’s Top 10 news stories of 2009:

Bruce Wasson, one of the petitioners who is working to create an Altadena school district to improve achievement, tells us that they've reached their 7,000 signature goal, and emails us as to the next step:
Petitions will be forwarded to the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) after the last few have come back and volunteers have decided the team is ready for next steps.

Friends watching our dog over the holidays reported that she dashed out the front door and hightailed it into the pass between La Canada and Altadena. The dog's name is Rosie and she is a small(ish) white terrier with black spots. Her ears are too large and her legs too short.

The Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA), the premier performing and visual arts high school in the Western U.S., has set January 22, 2010 as the deadline for applying to all art departments of the school for enrollment in the Fall 2010.

I have a good friend, Paula, who lives in Bellingham, Wa. This last summer her mother was killed and her father dreadfully injured in an auto accident while on vacation. The father is still in neuro rehab and will never be able to return to his independent home in Sherman Oaks.
His two beautiful dalmatians have been with a dog sitter until now when it has become clear he will not be able to take care of himself,

- Good news dept.: Webster's Fine Stationers (Altadenablog sponsor) donated $500 of holiday receipts to Danny's Farm. Cathy Gott of Danny's Farm says it will go toward a new canvas cover for part of the farm, which offers programs for all kinds of children and employement for disabled adults. The American Cancer Society invites individuals and families who want to celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease to join us at our Relay For Life of Altadena Kickoff on Sat., Jan. 30 at 2 PM at the Altadena Library, 600 E. Mariposa.In 1985, Relay For Life began with one man who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000.

There's a note making its way through the local newsgroups that claims to be from the Better Business Bureau, giving advice on how to avoid being scammed during the 2010 census. Rather than pass on a message whose provenance we aren't sure of (altho' it seems legit), we're referring you to this page on the official BBB website that tells you what to be wary of when someone claiming to be a census taker rings your doorbell.

The Altadena Library is now accepting applications and nominations for its new Poet Laureate. Poets who live, work or are active in the Altadena community are invited to apply.
The inauguration of the Poet Laureate for Altadena Library 2010-2012 will take place on April 10 at the library’s annual Poetry & Cookies celebration. The laureate’s poetry will be featured at this event and in the library’s annual publication of poetry which will be available at the presentation.

Central Altadena Little League (CALL) will be holding sign-ups for its 2010 Baseball Season on Saturdays, January 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Sign-ups will be held at the lower baseball diamond at Farnsworth Park, Altadena (corner of Lake Ave. & Concha St.) from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Try-outs will also be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Local poets who would like to be part of the Altadena Library’s annual Poetry and Cookies program and
be included in the library’s annual poetry publication, should submit poems single spaced along with a two sentence bio to
pdutton@altadenalibrary.org by February 15.
Up to 78 lines not more than 50 spaces in length may be printed in the 2010 edition of Poetry and Cookies. Since children may be in the audience submissions should be family rated.

The President Streets neighbors turned out this morning, rain or no, for the final push in the Altadena Sheriff’s Station Food and Toy Drive on Harding. Deputies accepted drive-thru donations (above, with Capt. Roosevelt Blow on the right in a non-uniform hat), but some neighbors walked right up from their homes, as did Bud and Nancee Darling.

Evacuation orders could be issued later today to residents of at-risk communities impacted by burn areas due to present weather conditions over the Los Angeles area.
These weather conditions are forecast to continue throughout today and tomorrow.

As of about 4 PM Saturday afternoon, authorities are reporting mud and debris over part of the Angeles Crest Highway eight miles from the 210. CHP and sheriff's are deployed around the area, so we (that is, me) is re-activating our emergency protocols — which means we'll be monitoring scanner traffic and all media, give you the updates as we receive them,

OK, the weather washed out the North Lake Pole Shop-Hop Festival, to the disappointment of many. Some businesses (including Amy’s Patio Cafe and Webster’s Fine Stationers) remained open late, Altadena Junction held its photography showing, but it’s tough to get people out on a night like this.
That didn’t stop some people, tho’. A pile of snow was spread on Galloway Alley for sledding, and it actually got used. PIctured is Ben McGinty of (Altadenablog sponsor) Gallery at the End of the World taking to the slope.

Relatively uneventful day, flood-wise, but we have to call it a night (family emergency). Before we go, we do hear from the sheriff's that the four stranded Eaton Canyon hikers were recovered safely.
