Paula Johnson, the editor of the Rose City Sisters, has announced nine finalists in their 2009 flash fiction competition.
The Rose City Sisters blog is an online anthology of women writers from the Pasadena area, writing "flash fiction," stories of 1,000 words or less.

Los Angeles Coordinated Agency Recovery Effort (CARE)has announced that Angeles National Forest Highway, Big Tujunga Canyon Rd., and Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Rd. will be closed to all but emergency and public works vehicles as of 4 AM Sunday.

The Altadena Town Council will start its regular meeting on Tuesday as a joint session with the Pasadena Unified School District Governing Board, followed by the regular meeting. Please note that the meeting will start an hour earlier, at 6 PM.

UPDATE 5:30: In a message that says, “The Meadows are cut off,” Zak Brown tell us:
Here’s some video of Canyon Crest Drive. The only access to the Meadows. We’re pretty much cut off from the rest of Altadena now. It looks like debris flow from the station fire have clogged the culvert causing water to flow over the road. There also appears to be a place where the Canyon Crest is completely washed out.

The Caltech Jazz Bands are having a big concert of Latin jazz music on Sat., Jan. 30, at 8 PM, in Beckman Auditorium on the Caltech campus. It’s free!!! No tickets required, but you might want to get there a little early as last year all 1200 seats were full by concert time.

Got the call approx. 6 PM — wind blew a 60 ft. pine tree down at 2832 Maiden Lane, blocking the street, a vehicle underneath it. Sheriffs and county crews are working to remove it.

PSN reports that 29-year-old Kameron Walker of Duarte, a member of an Altadena-based gang we will not dignify by giving their name here, was sentenced today for the murder of 17-year-old Dion Holloway. His accomplice, Eric Williams of Altadena, will be sentenced next month.

Today at Steve’s Bike Shop was the drawing for everyone who participated in last weekend’s Altadena Arts Coalition North Lake Pole Shop Hop, and it was a nice addition to the Christmas season.

We celebrate the Nativity of the Lord in our household today, and wish you the best of the season, whatever you call it and however you choose to celebrate it. Blogging will be light or nonexistent today, and we are rerunning last year’s piece:

Got lots of reports of emergency vehicles going up Chaney Trail, and have been listening to the scanner off and on this afternoon. Sheriffs mounted a rescue of a hiker, who was picked up sometime between 2 and 3 PM and helicoptered to Huntington Memorial Hospital with a leg injury. More as we get it.

Sheriff Lt. Jack W. Ewell sent us the following press release and pictures from yesterday’s rescue:
Altadena Sheriff’s Station received information from Los Angeles Police Department personnel about a lone hiker stranded on a ledge in the Chaney Trail-Mount Lowe area of the Angeles National Forest. The hiker slipped off of a freshly-cut trail and fell 100 feet down the side of a cliff face, injuring his right leg during the descent. He landed in a dangerously precarious position and was unable to maneuver out of it.

We were asked to pass on this information from the National Forest Service about volunteer efforts to restore the trees in the forest. The graphics are a letter from Supervisor Jody Noiron (yeah, we know, settle down over there!), and information on the Plant a Tree program, after the jump.
Much of our response to volunteers is expressed in an Oct. 2009 letter from Forest Supervisor Jody Noiron, which is attached. One key message in Jody’s letter is that restoration activities within the burn area,
