The Altadena Community Center was the scene for a sendoff of Sheriff Capt. Roosevelt Blow, who retires today after 33 years in law enforcement and three years as Altadena Station’s commander. Many well-wishers attended the reception, including Altadena Library District board member Tom Hubbard and Star-News columnist Shirlee Smith. (Since Hubbard’s wife Monica is a force on the “Yes on CC” campaign, and Smith … is not, we see his bridge-building skills at work!)

Today, Altadena Sheriff Station welcomes its new captain, Steven McLean.
A 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept., McLean joined the station last fall and has been taking over the duties of now-retired Capt. Roosevelt Blow. McLean already boasts the arrest of 11 theft suspects and a reduction of 56% in theft reports around town under his watch.
McLean credits the reduction and arrests to a modified strategy,

Just a reminder to send out to everyone in your Neighborhood Watch Groups. In the past two days we’ve had two burglaries of homes east side. A home on Midwick was entered during the night through an unlocked door. On Thursday a home on Midlothian was entered through an unlocked window. Please remember to lock-up when you leave your home or go to bed.

The Altadena Library is pleased to announce the new Poet Laureate for the Altadena Library District will be Alene Terzian. Her official inauguration will be on Sat., April 10 at 2 PM at the library’s annual Friends sponsored program, Poetry and Cookies. Her term will be from May 2010 through April 2012. Marcia Thompson, the library’s current laureate, will be there to pass the laurels.
This event is free and will take place in the community room of the main Altadena Library located at 600 East Mariposa Street,

About 20 radio cars, a passel of sheriff deputies, and volunteers gathered in Charles White this morning to pass out fliers of theft and burglary prevention tips to west side neighborhoods. Altadena Sheriff Capt. Steven McLean said that about 75 volunteers showed up to spread the word. The sweep will go on until about 2 PM today.

Central Altadena Little League (CALL) will be holding its Baseball Mania and Picture Day Event on Sat., April 10 from 8 AM- 5 PM at the lower field of Farnsworth Park in Altadena. This annual fundraiser will challenge Little Leaguers in friendly competition in areas of running, throwing and pitching while obtaining sponsorships for their efforts. The event will be highlighted by a homerun derby at 12:30 p.m.

There is a tree down on the west side of Lincoln between Palm & Altadena, blocking the street. There are folding signs blocking the southbound lane at Palm and northbound lane at Lincoln, but evidently the sheriff doesn't want any traffic through at all as I saw a deputy in a black and white run his lights and pull over someone who turned on Lincoln!

I was just on Lake Ave. by the Cobb estate, and on my way to my car, I saw that the woman parked in front of me was talking to the police because her front seat passenger-side window had been smashed. She started her hike around the same time I did–around 1 p.m., and she told me she had left her purse on the front seat.

The La Vina Homeowner's Association's attempt to keep public trails on the property closed was rejected yesterday in a decision by the state Court of Appeals.
La Vina appealed a decision by the county court last year that the trails be reopened and the warning signs taken down.

Something old but new to us, the large painting (10’ x 12’) in the attached document has never been on view to the public. The funds we raise for the Summer Concert Series are completely outside of the funds we raise for equipment and services for the Altadena Sheriff’s Station. It has always been that way, and will continue to be that way. We have a number of sponsors lined up, but we could always use more.

Looks like nothing too urgent on the agenda, but chairman Gino Sund tells us that (item 9.3) the council will be getting public input on a proposed ordinance for overnight parking permits for oversized vehicles. Commercial vehicles in excess of 10,000 lbs. are already forbidden from parking overnight on our streets, but there is a problem of non-residents parking their oversize vehicles in Altadena. The proposed ordinance would provide a free parking permit for residents,

Danny’s Farm held an open house Saturday, and all kinds of people showed up to see the animals and learn about the good work the Farm does with adults and children with disabilities.
Farm namesake Danny Gott and his large rabbit greeted all comers.

We've been reading a lot in the business wires lately about
Perfect Market, an Altadena-based business spawned in Pasadena's Idealab that unites advertising and search engines. This Business Wire story says that Perfect Market just sold $6 million in shares to a variety of companies, led by the Tribune Co.

The Arroyo Food Co-op folks have announced their next three “coffee shop hop” information meetings, where you can enjoy your coffee or tea uncolored by politics and talk about food instead!

At last night’s Town Council meeting:
- The Town Council is considering an ordinance to restrict overnight parking of RVs and other vehicles on Altadena streets. According to council chair Gino Sund, ever since Pasadena stepped up enforcement, some out-of-town RV owners are storing their rigs on the streets of Altadena, moving them every three days to avoid getting ticketed — and even if they do get a ticket, it’s cheaper than paying hundreds of dollars a month in storage fees.

This spring’s community art project is underway from the Altadena Arts Coalition: entitled Abstract: Altadena, it’s a chance to be really creative with local images. It will all wind up in a show at Galloway Alley on May 1, part of another North Lake Ave. business open house. Submissions are $15, and signup is at Photography by Walt at its new location, 875 E.
