The Altadena Chamber of Commerce has some major events coming up in the next few weeks:

On Wed., April 28, 2010  5:30-7 PM will be the monthly Chamber mixer and grand re-opening ceremonies at Photography by Walt's new location, 875 E. Mariposa Street.

On Fri., April 30, Kat Scrap Studio (2455 N. Lake Ave. at Mariposa) will hold its grand opening (details to come).

Two events coming up Monday night in the 'Dena:

Library: Burst Out Your Creative Juices: Author, columnist, and writing coach Ellen Snortland has an impressive resume of talents.  Known especially for her terrific writers' workshops, she will demonstrate several exercises to activate the writer within.  This fun workshop is for both beginning and advanced writers. 

Members of the Arroyo Food Co-op will also be here to introduce you to their exciting new concept of  buying locally grown,

Forest Service district ranger Michael McIntyre is sending periodic updates on the work that his agency and Outward Bound Adventures are doing on the Cobb Estate (Lake and Loma Alta).  Key information this week is that the Forest Service is working with the Audobon Society to remove Audobon's graffiti magnet signs so that they can be repaired off-site;

Installation of an unmanned telecommunications facility disguised as a 100 foot monopine. AT&T will be installing 9 panel antennas at 95 feet with a 27 foot by 12 foot lease area for related equipment.

Celebrating our 4th anniversary and salon expansion we are hosting a weekend of food , fashion, music and give- aways!

We've been reading the news in the past week, as everybody has, and the behavior in the media quarters has ginned up enough disgust for a lifetime, thank you.

But folks … this is too much.  The Yes on CC website reports that a banner at Webster school was vandalized this week. 

One more before we sign off: some fan did a 60's opening for "Lost", as if done by (Altadena resident) Saul Bass!

The gathering was in part in memory of retired Deputy Charlene “Charlie” Rottler, who died Jan. 3 of this year, but also in honor of Judy Preimsberger and Judy Evans, who received awards from the Sheriff’s Department and the county Board of Supervisors.  All were members of the first “Women in Patrol”

The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team has started a blog where they detail some of their rescues: this entry has a Sunday rescue of a woman and her dog, including a helicopter landing at Farnsworth Park.  Fortunately, all ended well.

The Friends of the Altadena Library will sponsor its annual Poetry & Cookies celebration on Saturday April 10 at 2 pm. This free event will feature a reading by the new Poet Laureate for Altadena Library, Alene Terzian. The public is invited to hear Ms.

The Altadena Historical Society is promoting our upcoming tour with facts and photos from our files about the George Gilbert Green family.

Green was a multi millionaire when there were only 4000 millionaires in the country.  His modest 23 room house on Mariposa Street in Altadena was called “the ranch.”  The house is gone, but the carriage house where he kept his ranch horses and numerous carriages still stands and will be open to the public on April 25,

Altadena Schools Community Meetings

At current rates, approximately half of Altadena’s demographic majority will graduate from high school. Altadena’s high school dropouts are among the estimated one million students who drop out of high school every year.
