Online Ballot Measure Discussion for Pasadena-Area Voters Set for Wednesday

Pasadena-area voters can join a Zoom discussion of the November ballot measures Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m., hosted by the National Women’s Political Caucus Greater Pasadena Area and the League of Women Voters.

“A Conversation on the Ballot Measures” comes less than two weeks before the Nov. 3 general election, when Californians will vote on 14 statewide propositions. The measures address subjects including housing, elections, state finance, health care and taxes, according to the California secretary of state’s qualified-measures list.

In Pasadena, the ballot also includes Measure PFD, a proposed tax for fire protection, paramedic services and wildfire preparedness. The city says the measure would levy 19 cents annually per square foot of improved property, generating an estimated $22.1 million a year. It would expire after 14 years, provide specified exemptions and require two-thirds voter approval. Critics contend that the Measure is an unnecessary financial burden on local families because the Measure’s objectives can be achieved on current city budgets through focused financial planning.

The caucus has not said whether Measure PFD will be part of Wednesday’s discussion.

Voters in the Pasadena City College district also will decide Measure UP, a bond proposal for college facilities and career-training programs, according to the Pasadena City Council’s published election materials. The organizers have not identified any local measures on the meeting agenda.

Voters seeking more information can consult the California secretary of state’s official voter guide, which includes impartial analyses and arguments for and against state propositions. The League of Women Voters Pasadena Area also provides links to voter guides and proposition resources on its website.

The state’s regular online registration deadline was Oct. 19. Eligible Californians who missed it can still register conditionally and vote at a county elections office or in-person voting location through Election Day. Los Angeles County says select vote centers will open Oct. 24 and all vote centers will open Oct. 31.

The caucus directed questions about the Zoom program to chair@nwpcgpa.org. The election is Tuesday, Nov. 3, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
