Juneteenth Weekend Events Planned Across Pasadena and Altadena

Juneteenth observances across Pasadena and Altadena on Friday, June 19, and Saturday, June 20, will include a community hike, scholarship luncheon, blues performance, outdoor night party, concert, comedy shows, festival, community fair and roller skating celebration.
The events begin Friday morning in Altadena and continue through Saturday evening at Pasadena City Hall, with several programs free to attend and others requiring advance tickets or reservations.
The Altadena Historical Society will open the Friday schedule at 8:30 a.m. with a Juneteenth hike on the El Prieto Trail. The 3.2-mile round-trip community hike will include the unveiling of a new public bench dedicated to the legacy of Robert Owens, described in the event listing as an early Black pioneer, and the region’s Indigenous people. The bench was created by Eagle Scout candidate Elias Silva. Participants will meet at the JPL East Parking Lot in Altadena. The event is free.
At noon Friday, the Altadena Historical Society will hold its 6th Annual Juneteenth Celebration and Scholarship Luncheon at Loma Alta Park, 3330 N. Lincoln Ave. The event includes the Altadena Oral History Project, with Altadena African American community members speaking about the Eaton Fire; the Ellen Garrison Clark Scholarship Award ceremony; a display of handcrafted quilts; and a Juneteenth photography exhibit curated by photographer Alfred Haymond. Tickets are $35 and include lunch. Reservations and payment must be made in advance, and no tickets will be sold at the door.
Pasadena Public Library will present a Brother Yusef blues performance at 3 p.m. Friday at La Pintoresca Branch Library, 1355 N. Raymond Ave. The free program invites attendees to “stomp, clap, and celebrate Juneteenth” with Brother Yusef, described in the listing as the King of FattBack Blues. The listing notes that the library’s May/June brochure shows the performance at 3 p.m., while some newer public listings show noon to 1 p.m.
Friday evening events begin at 5 p.m. in Altadena with DENA Juneteenth: Backyard Boogie, hosted by My Tribe Rise at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 2283 N. Fair Oaks Ave. The free outdoor night party, scheduled from 5 to 10 p.m., is billed as a kickoff to the Juneteenth weekend. It will feature live music ranging from oldies to contemporary hits, including performances by Jammetry and “American Idol” alum Edi Callier. The event also includes games, neon art, complimentary food and a Juneteenth art exhibition.
At 7 p.m. Friday, Hollywood Piano, 499 S. Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena, will host “A Juneteenth Celebration Concert featuring Kirk André Wilson.” The free concert is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and will include Kirk André Wilson and all-star musicians performing world premiere compositions. Seating is limited to 100.
The Los Angeles Tuskegee Alumni Club will host two Juneteenth Comedy Show seatings Friday night at The Ice House California Room, 24 N. Mentor Ave. in Pasadena. The first seating is scheduled from 7:30 to 9 p.m., and the second from 9:30 to 11 p.m. The event is for guests 21 and older and will include stand-up comedy, live DJ music, line dancing, a curated menu and HBCU pride. Tickets are $25 plus fees, and a two-item minimum applies. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, My Tribe Rise will hold the 6th Annual “DENA Juneteenth” Festival & Community Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Altadena. The free festival will include music, food, fellowship, live performances, healing and wellness programming, educational content, vendors and an Academic Scholarship Program. Grants also will be awarded to local survivor individuals and businesses.
The City of Pasadena’s Juneteenth celebration will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave., where the City of Pasadena Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, in partnership with the NAACP Pasadena Branch, will host a Juneteenth Celebration and 5th Annual Roller Jam.
The free City Hall event will center on the NAACP Pasadena Branch’s 5th Annual Roller Jam while also offering a broader afternoon and evening of family-friendly activities on the City Hall grounds. The program will include arts and crafts, a live DJ and community resource booths, giving attendees opportunities to skate, listen to music, take part in hands-on activities and connect with local organizations. Roller skates can be borrowed at no cost, making the skating portion accessible to people who do not bring their own equipment. Food will be available for purchase from vendors during the event.
