Supervisor Barger recognizes agencies as county declares March Social Work Month
Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger on Tuesday honored three Altadena-based foster youth agencies for their swift action during the Eaton Fire that swept through Altadena in early January, as the Board unanimously declared March as National Social Work Month in the County.
Five Acres, Sycamores, and Bourne Family Services received recognition for ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable children during the fire emergency that began on January 8.
“Despite the terrifying circumstances, the Five Acres team remained an unwavering anchor for foster youth,” Barger said at Tuesday’s Board meeting. “Even with 25% of their staff displaced by the fire, their professionalism and dedication never wavered. They put children first, and that is truly commendable.”
The commemoration aligns with the National Association of Social Workers’ theme, “Social Work: Compassion + Action,” highlighting the crucial role social workers play in supporting vulnerable residents during times of hardship.
Five Acres, established in 1888, evacuated both their Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program and Shelter Care within 15 minutes after receiving early morning evacuation orders on Jan. 8. Staff continued providing support for children, including a 6-year-old who had arrived at the shelter just hours before the evacuation.
Sycamores, founded in 1902, safely evacuated all youth from their Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program to an alternative site where they continued providing services for 20 days. Staff also helped displaced families navigate complex paperwork to access resources and secure temporary housing.
The Eaton Fire destroyed Bourne Family Services’ Altadena site, displacing five teenage girls who lost all their belongings. Founded in 1999, Bourne provides residential care and mental health support to at-risk youth. Despite the devastation, staff secured temporary housing and raised funds to replace personal items.
“Bourne has an amazing team of dedicated professionals who provide round-the-clock care for at-risk youth,” said Timothy Tucker, chief executive officer of Bourne Family Services. “Even as they faced their own losses, their unwavering commitment to the young people we serve never faltered. The recognition we’ve received today is deeply humbling.”
Los Angeles County employs thousands of social workers across multiple departments who serve in various capacities, including:
- Child Welfare Social Workers who investigate child abuse and neglect, ensure children’s safety, and connect families to support services.
- Adult Protective Services Social Workers who assist seniors and adults with disabilities to maintain independence and safety.
- Mental Health Social Workers who provide crisis intervention, counseling, and behavioral health support.
- Healthcare Social Workers who help patients navigate complex medical systems and access essential healthcare services.
“Social workers are the backbone of our communities, providing critical support that empowers individuals and families,” Barger said. “From child welfare to mental health services, their tireless dedication ensures that no one is left behind. I deeply appreciate their service and commitment to strengthening our communities.”
The County’s designation of March as National Social Work Month recognizes the invaluable contributions of social workers across numerous departments, including Aging and Disabilities, Auditor-Controller, Children and Family Services, District Attorney’s Office, Health Services, Mental Health, Public Health, and Public Social Services. Their work transforms lives, promotes justice, and ensures equitable access to essential services.
