Getty Curator to Examine Degas Monotypes at Norton Simon Saturday

“The Artist at Play: Degas and Monotype,” by Danielle Canter, assistant curator in the Getty’s Department of Drawings, runs from 5 to 6 p.m. in the museum’s theater. The Norton Simon holds more than 100 works by Degas, a group the museum calls the second-largest assembled by a single collector, after the Havemeyer collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Monotype yields a single impression. Degas encountered it in the 1870s, and it let him blur the boundaries between mediums as he worked with ink, paint and pastel, the museum says. He had come to it as a draftsman, trained under a disciple of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, whose advice, the museum recounts, was: “Draw lines, young man. Many lines.”

The museum’s Degas monotypes include “Squall in the Mountains” and “Autumn Landscape (L’Estérel),” both from 1890. “Woman Drying Herself after the Bath,” from 1876 to 1877, is pastel over monotype and is on view.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and everyone must be seated by 4:50 p.m. The lecture is free with museum admission: $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 62 and older, and free for members, students with valid identification and everyone 18 and under.
