Lanterman House Opens Its 1915 Concrete Craftsman Home on the Final Day of Craftsman Week

The La Cañada Flintridge house, which retains its original furnishings, holds a special open house Sunday afternoon
The Lanterman House in La Cañada Flintridge will hold a special open house Sunday afternoon as part of Pasadena Heritage’s Craftsman Week, which runs October 11 to 18.
The house is a 1915 Craftsman home designed by Arthur L. Haley for Roy and Emily Lanterman. It features a U-shaped Mexican Colonial hacienda design with a fountain courtyard in the middle, pergolas with plantings on all sides and English Arts and Crafts design elements throughout. A ballroom occupies the second story.
Roy Lanterman built in reinforced concrete because of the high risk of fire from the native chaparral surrounding the property, and because he had seen the dangers of fire while running an emergency hospital in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake.
The couple lived in the home from 1915 until their deaths in 1948 and 1949, respectively. Their son Lloyd left the house and all of its original furnishings to the city in 1987, and it opened as a museum in 1993. The Lanterman House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is owned by the City of La Cañada Flintridge and is maintained by the nonprofit Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation.
Craftsman Week includes interior tours, walking tours, lectures, exhibitions and hands-on craft demonstrations. This year’s lineup features access to the Duncan-Irwin House and Blacker House and behind-the-scenes experiences at Judson Studios. In 2025, Craftsman Week welcomed more than 1,200 visitors.
Regular Lanterman House tours are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. They are led by trained docents and last approximately 75 minutes. Upcoming programs include “Tid-Bits and Skeletons: Secrets of the Lanterman Family” on November 8 and “Becoming 91011: The Story of La Cañada Flintridge” on December 6. Lectures at the house are free, with first-come, first-served seating.
Inside the Lanterman House — A Special Open House will run on Sunday, October 18 at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Lanterman House, 4420 Encinas Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. For more information, call (818) 790-1421 or visit https://www.pasadenaheritage.
