Metro to Hold Two Low-Income Fare Sign-Up Sessions in Pasadena on September 22

Two listings at the same East Foothill Boulevard address show different start times, and the free-fare program behind them is open to qualifying residents countywide, including in Altadena

Metro’s Low-Income Fare is Easy program, known as LIFE, will enroll eligible low-income riders in free- and reduced-fare transit benefits at 2550 E. Foothill Blvd. in Pasadena on Tuesday, Sept. 22, according to event listings published by Metro.

Metro has posted two separate listings for that date and address. One runs from 10 a.m. to noon and the other from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as of Sept. 21. Both are listed at no cost, and both identify the site as the Pacific Clinic Workshop.

That address matches the Pacific Clinics behavioral health office on East Foothill Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County service locator. Metro’s listings do not state whether the two entries describe one enrollment session or two.

The program is open to qualifying Los Angeles County residents, according to Metro’s program page. Altadena, an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, falls within that eligibility area on the same terms as Pasadena.

Once an application is approved, a 90-day pass for unlimited free rides is added automatically to the rider’s TAP card, Metro’s program page states. After the first 90 days, participants can load 20 free regional rides onto the card each month. Those rides cover base fare only, and transfers between agencies cost extra.

Participants can apply the discount to a monthly pass instead. Metro’s posted fare tables show a regular EZ Transit Pass falling from $110 to $86, a Pasadena Transit 30-day pass falling from $15 to no cost, and a Foothill Transit 31-day pass falling from $60 to $36, as of Sept. 21.

Riders qualify automatically if they are enrolled in CalFresh, EBT, a Medi-Cal plan, a reduced lunch program, SNAP benefits, Social Security, Social Security Disability or TANF, according to the program page. Riders can also qualify on household income, with limits running from $58,300 for one person to $110,000 for eight people as of Sept. 21. Applicants must be 18 or older, or enroll under an adult head of household.

The event listings instruct attendees to bring a photo identification and proof of income, and note that applicants have the option to self-certify their income instead.
