Aztec Drums and Dance Come to Villa Parke After Dark

A free, all-ages lesson anchors one night of Pasadena’s 15th summer season of evening park programming

For one summer evening, the softball field at Villa Parke will trade fly balls for the steady pulse of Aztec drums.

The free, all-ages session — called Aztec Dance Toltecayotl — invites anyone who shows up to learn traditional dance from the ground up, starting with basic movements and building toward choreographed steps, all carried by live drumming. It runs Saturday, July 25, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Villa Parke Community Center Softball Field, 363 East Villa Street.

The night is one entry in Parks After Dark, the City of Pasadena program that stretches recreation hours into summer evenings at neighborhood parks. According to a City of Pasadena press release issued June 24, this is the program’s 15th year, running July 9 through August 14 with free family-friendly activities, sports, movies, and swimming across Pasadena parks. The city says this season adds hands-on STEM activities led by Caltech scientists and engineers at select events.

The Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department runs the program, which the city describes as a partnership with the Pasadena Police Department and part of a broader violence-prevention strategy. Most activities, including the Aztec dance session, are free; the city notes that registration is required only for select programs and leagues, and that activities are subject to change.

According to the city, Parks After Dark spreads across seven park sites this summer, opening with a kickoff festival on Thursday, July 9, at Robinson Park. From there the schedule fans out on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings — movie nights, sports leagues, and pool events among them — before the season closes in mid-August.

At Villa Parke, the Aztec dance night sits alongside other July evenings at the same park, including a Foam and Glow Frenzy on Thursday, July 16, and the Aqua Boogie Nights recreation swims that alternate between the Villa Parke and Kennedy pools on Saturday evenings. The pattern is the same one the program has followed for years: take a familiar neighborhood park, keep the lights on past dinnertime, and give families a reason to gather.

The Aztec dance session leans on participation rather than performance. Instructors begin with fundamental movements before building to fuller routines, and live drumming sets the rhythm throughout, according to the city’s event listing. No experience is expected, and the session is open to every age group.
