Yes, Skunk, you are a needful thing,
for garden slugs you eat,
but spring can be a loathsome time
because you are in heat!

Remarkable, that spray you shoot,
from six to ten long feet!
When hills were burning, all aflame,
we had our first strange meet.

So dark it was, I thought you were
a lovely kitty queen.
You walked from right, I from the left,
our meet? We both did scream!

You ran one way—I opposite,
like gunslingers, we turned.
Your face was sweet, in peace you stared,,
a Nature lesson learned.

A fire brought you to my life;
your diet?  Garden snail.
Green gardener you are now to me,
and so I end our tale.

Except this morning I must say,
whole house—it truly stunk!
In spring, there’s something in the air;
oh yes, it is the skunk!
