I found this adorable little kitten crawling along our fence near our trash cans Sunday the 4th of September.  I’ve canvassed the neighborhood, put out signs, posted on Face Book and emailed to all my friends but have not been able to find him a home yet.  I’m not able to take in another cat.  He is about 2 or 3 months old, sweet, affectionate, Siamese mix with beautiful blue eyes and full of energy.

We are excited to announce Aveson Global Leadership Academy (Grades 6-12) is up and running at our new location at 1206 Lincoln Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103. Aveson Global Leadership Academy is beginning its 5th year as a free public charter school.

With our new, larger location, Aveson has room for more students than we have had in previous years.  

Several news outlets are saying that the Ralphs grocery store chain could close as soon as Sunday night if it fails to come to an agreement with the grocery worker's union.

We will be featuring the cottage of Altadena’s first historian, Sarah Noble Ives on our East Mariposa Street history tour on Sun., Oct. 23, from 10 AM to 4 PM.  Sarah was not only a noted author but also a landscape painter of some renown.  Her history of Altadena was published by the Historical Society in 1938.  

• It’s Social: The Social Media Club has rescheduled its next meeting, “How to Map Your Social Graph,” to Thurs., Sept. 22, at 11:30 PM.  Meetings are open to all at the Business Technology Center, 2400 Lincoln Ave., and the meeting is free.
• AHS looking for volunteers: A reminder that the Altadena Historical Society is looking for volunteer docents for its “Secrets of Mariposa” tour on Sun., Oct. 23.  Whittier Daily News has the scoop.

As you know, the Altadena Sheriff’s Station is finishing up more than a year of reconstruction/ renovation and the Grand Re-Opening Celebration will take place next Saturday.  Stay tuned for an update on a change in time for the Grand Re-Opening.

The leadership team and the deputies at Altadena Station are asking for some help.  Difficult economic times for the County have meant stringent budget cuts for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Topics include:

• Athens Waste: get your questions ready — progress report, and what can be recycled.
• County Public Works: trash in Altadena: how do you get your neighbor to clean up.  Weeds, leaves, dry brush: who do we contact?
• Forming a Neighborhood Watch: how do you do it?

A cornucopia of wonders at our Sunday column for the Valley Sun, which finally went up online this morning.

As you know, the Altadena Sheriff’s Station installed two drop off boxes in front of the Station a few months ago and the boxes are now being very well used.

For those of you who need a safe way to dispose of sharps – hypodermic needles, the Station doesn’t yet have a sharps box available.

• Street repairs: The council heard a report from the Department of Public Works on work that will be done on several streets next summer.  Maiden Lane and Holliston Ave.

Our content partners at the Pasadena Sun report that the body of an African-American man in his 30’s was found by a witness who called police at around 12:45 AM Wednesday morning. Witnesses report that he is a Pasadena barber, but an official identification is still pending.

Police have blocked off Washington Boulevard at Lake Avenue as they continue the investigation.

Captain McLean from the Altadena Sheriff’s Station, his leadership team and the deputies and administrative staff are thanking you all very much for helping them move closer to having televisions in all the places they need them at the Sheriff’s Station.

They requested help acquiring seven Sony Bravia 32 inch TVs that were on sale at some places for $368 each plus tax and one Sony Bravia 46 inch TV which was also for sale in some stores for $898.

Federal funding cuts continue to impact the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge, where 40 workers were laid off last week, the latest notch in a prolonged period of cutbacks for the agency.

The Altadena Community Church, 943 E. Altadena Dr., re-installed its keynote stained glass window, “The Light of the World,”  on Wednesday.  The window, which had been deteriorating from age and exposure, was removed after Easter because lead solder that held the individual glass panels together was falling off the window and into the street, said  church member Chris Meadows. A new, non-rotting circular aluminum frame was set around the glass, which was taken for cleaning and restoration to Judson Studios,

12:50 PM – A residential burglary occurred in the 600 block of E. Mariposa Street.  Suspect(s) attempted to enter the residence by prying and removing the window screen.  The resident was home at the time and contacted sheriff’s department.  Loss: none.

Pasadena police on Thursday arrested four people in connection with the slaying of King Eldridge King, a Pasadena barber whose body was discovered in a parking lot early Wednesday morning.

In honor of National Public Lands Day, the Angeles National Forest will offer visitors free admission on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The National Adventure Pass normally required for daytime activities such as fishing and hiking will be waived. Throughout the country, volunteers will take to public lands to clean up and make improvements.

A joint group of LA County Sheriff’s Deputies, Pasadena Police, and FBI agents raided the house on the 400 block of West Harriet at approximately 5 AM this morning.  The operation was to serve a search warrant related to a narcotics investigation.

One aspect of the Grand Re-Opening Celebration about which you may not know is that Altadena Mountain Rescue is also celebrating its 60th anniversary tomorrow.  Plan for enough time to tour the renovated station and be sure to visit Altadena Mountain Rescue’s newly renovated facilities. 

On a related note,  orthopedic surgeon Dr. Donald Longjohn was named one of the "Top Doctors" in U.S. News and World Report magazine.  Longjohn, who practices at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation, is also a flight physician for Air Rescue 5.

Skip Robinson, writing in Vertical, a helicopter industry publication, says the LA County Sheriff’s Department Aero Bureau has purchased three Eurocopter AS332 L1 Super Pumas, which will replace the modified Sikorsky SH-3H Sea Kings now used in rescues.

• Hector Tobar at the LA Times looks at the early days of integration at the Pasadena Unified School District, starting with a picture at Noyes Elementary (now Aveson Charter School) c. 1971.
• The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team caught another one in Eaton Canyon:  a lost hiker, called in at 7:20 PM on Wednesday by another hiker who heard the yell for help. The lost hiker was located at 9:10 PM, cold but uninjured.
