When Caltech Seismic Network Manager Richard Guy spoke at the Altadena Library last week he knocked our socks off! His films of recent earthquakes and simulations of what could happen here were shocking.

A self-taught, self-styled painter, Altadena artist Patrick Gothard is one of the area’s most prolific artists. With an almost Seuss-like approach, Gothard presents us with a colorful sense of wonder and whimsy making even some of the more difficult topics easily accessible.

It was an exciting day in Altadena and vicinity as Space Shuttle Endeavour was ready for its close-up this morning.  Endeavour took a final bow, flying over points in Northern and Southern California before landing at LAX to be prepared for its future as a California Science Center exhibit.  It swept the local area starting at about 11:30 this morning,

PSN has a nice obit for former Christmas Tree Lane resident John Ingle, who died Sept. 16.  Ingle was best known for playing Edward Quartermain, the devious patriarch on the soap General Hospital.

Thanks to a tip, Altadena sheriff deputies arrested Deon Mejia, 30, of Altadena on charges related to an August burglary.

According to a press release from the Altadena Sheriff Station, deputies responded to a residential burglary call to a home on the 100 block of West Mendocino Street on Aug. 24. The victim, who was home at the time, was alerted to the suspect after hearing the dog bark.  

The Pasadena Village is a “membership organization connecting people aged 55 and over to resources that enable its members to enjoy safe, healthy and satisfying lives while remaining in their own homes,” according to a press release.

The Pasadena Village will officially launch Sun., Sept. 23, with an event at the home of Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and his wife Claire.    Keynote speaker will be Susan McWhinney-Morse,

The Altadena office of the California Highway Patrol will be conducting a sobriety/driver license checkpoint somewhere in East Altadena tonight, according to a release from the CHP:

“We would like to remind everyone to designate a sober driver. Driving under the influence is inexcusable and has cost the lives of too many people,” said Captain Steve Strull, Altadena Area Commander. The mission of the CHP is to ensure the highest level of safety,

Reader Juan Motta captured this view of the fire now raging in Asuza Canyon near Glendora.  According to reports, the fire has already consumed 700 acres as of this afternoon.

UPDATE 11:30 PM:  The National Forest Service says that the fire (now named the Williams fire) has consumed 3,600 acres, and all campers have been evacuated from the San Gabriel Canyon,  East Fork Area in the mountains north of Azusa / Glendora where the fire is currently raging.  

8 AM: Inciweb reports that the fire has burned 4,000 acres.  400 fire personnel are involved, as well as six heavy air tankers, eight helicopers, 30 engines, two bulldozers, and 25 hand crews, in a mix of federal, state, and local resources.  Structures in Camp Williams are threatened, and there are evacuation orders for the entire San Gabriel Canyon, including recreation along Highway 39.

The Los Angeles County Sheriffs have put out an advisory that the *72 phone scam seems to be coming back.

It works like this:  the victim receives a call from an imposter claiming to be a deputy.  The “deputy” tells the victim that a family member has been involved in an accident or is in jail, and the victimi was listed as the contact.  The victim is then told that they can get the information they need by dialing a number that begins with *72 (star-72),

That helicopter you hear (@3:15 PM today) is a CBS-2 chopper looking for a bear.

The bear was spotted on Skyview Drive, creating a lockdown on the Aveson Charter School campus this afternoon.  Children are being released to their parents, and not much more information is currently available.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Station says that they looked for but hadn’t found the bear.
