A mosquito with West Nile Virus was captured in La Canada-Flintridge last week, proof that even though mosquito season is ending, the danger is still out there.

October 16 is World Food Day. Altadena Community Garden, Arroyo Food Coop, Neighbors Building a Better Altadena and RIPE Altadena (Residential In-season Produce Exchange of Altadena) are partnering to honor the day by holding a food drive. Members of these four organizations will be at the Altadena Community Center from 6-8 p.m. on October 16 to collect donations of non-perishable food and to share information about their respective organizations.

The Weizmann Day School at the Pasadena Jewish Temple will celebrate its ninth annual Daniel Pearl World Music Day Concert this Friday, Oct. 12, starting at 11 AM.
The concert honors the memory and legacy of the reporter-musician Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was killed by Islamists in Pakistan in 2002.

Tonight, the Altadena Coalition of Neighborhood Associations (ACONA) will hold its much-anticipated meeting with Javier Angula, representative for Walmart Neighborhood Markets, from 7-8:30 PM.
In order to handle the expected attendence, the meeting will take place in the Altadena Senior Center, 540 E. Mariposa Street.
Altadena Sheriff Capt. John S. Benedict is also on tonight’s agenda.

Deputies used the help of a robot to search a house on the 600 block of Devirian Place Tuesday night, but failed to flush out the suspect in an afternoon shooting incident.

A friend asked us to help find a home for this friendly lab/pit mix. Her name is Diamond, presumably from the white marking on her chest. We are told she has been spayed and has her shots. Walmart representatives defended the company last night, saying that it was far more transparent about employee wages and benefits than other area grocery stores. They also said that studies that blame the retail giant for the loss of small businesses were contradicted by other studies.

The Altadena Ale & Wine House, 2329 N. Fair Oaks, is holding a wine-tasting fundraiser for the Pasadena Rugby Football Club tonight, starting at 5 PM.
Nine whites, reds, and sparkling wine from France, Spain, and Italy will be featured at the wine tasting. Food pairing is included. There will also be a live and silent auction. Admission is $30, and can be purchased at club’s website here.

The Altadena Library is a testbed in a state pilot project to make internet access available to more people through the public libraries.
According to Principal Librarian Pauli Dutton, the Altadena Libraries will be among 40 libraries around the state participating in the California Public Libraries Google Chromebook Pilot Project. “Chromebooks are a new type of computer which is lightweight with built-in security and so speedy they boot up in eight seconds,”

The Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St. , will hold an electronics recycling event in their parking lot on Sat., Oct. 20, from 10 AM-2 PM.
Computers, monitors, TVs, cell phones, MP3 players, ink and toner cartridges, printers, microwaves, cables … all electronics are welcome to be recycled.

The Arroyo & Foothills Conservancy has received an almost-$21,000 grant from Los Angeles County to plant native trees in the foothills, according to a press release from the organization.
The $20,550.13 grant will enable the Conservancy to begin to reforest lands “hat have been depleted of trees by wind, fire and historic logging,” the release said. The Conservancy will plant trees on land it owns in Rubio Canyon,

Tuesday, Sept. 25, is National Voter Registration Day, and the Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St., is the local location to make sure you’re ready for November’s election.
National Voter Registration Day is a national non-partisan effort involving major technology companies, retailers, voter registration and activation groups, and nonprofits including the YWCA, Tumblr, Patagonia, the League of Women Voters, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Univision, and over 700 other national an dlocal organizations.

The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy voted to authorize a grant of $100,000 Monday night to the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy to complete toward the purchase of 13 acres of Millard Canyon, according to a release from Assemblyman Anthony Portantino.
According to the release, the grant comes after the State Wildlife Conservation Board granted $375,000 in August toward the purchase.
It’s an important piece of the financial puzzle to forever save Millard Canyon,” Portantino said in the release.

Read books and get a free burger — what could be better?
The Altadena Library’s annual In-N-Out Cover to Cover Reading Program starts Sat., Oct. 6, and runs through Sat., Nov. 17. Children ages 4-12 who check out and read five library books during that period will receie a certificate for a free hamburger, cheeseburger, or grilled cheese sandwich at In-N-Out Burger.

The Altadena Sheriff Station reports no new information nor suspects in a disturbance at a liquor store on Lincoln Avenue Friday night.

Part of the University of California’s Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program, you can become a certified UC Victory Gardener through this four week program.
Classes cost $55 for the series or $15 per class, and meet at the Altadena Community Garden, 3333 N.
