Arroyo Monthly is a high-end yet free magazine that you can find around
Altadena and Pasadena. (Judging by the advertising, it’s apparently aimed at people who are obsessed with their bodies and their kitchens.) Anyway, in the June issue (not yet online) there’s a nice piece by Jenine Baines about two area originals: Altadena artistic legend

Richard Feynman (who is buried in Mountain View Cermetery).
The two men shared a friendship and were mutual students of each other.

Otterhop is a new-to-us blog with kids's events, and they've got a good reminder that tomorrow at 11 AM is Barks and Books at the Altadena Main Library (altho' whoever's writing the story doesn't seem to know the difference between Altadena and Pasadena). The Pasadena Humane Society gives your child a chance to read to a loveable dog at Altadena's library. Really,

Armenian Music and Musicians is the theme of a free concert to be given by the Crown City Symphony at the Altadena Senior Center on Sat., May 31, at 2 PM. Svetlana Oganesian, violinist and Ophelia Nanagyulyan, violist, will be soloists in

Congrats to our neighbors at Jet Propulsion Laboratory who successfully bulls-eyed the Phoenix lander on the arctic plains of Mars Sunday.
The photo was captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is the first time that a spacecraft has imaged the final descent of another spacecraft onto a planetary body. You can see the lander, its parachute, and the lines that attach the two on the brightened photo,

Christian Kooshian of Altadena, a student at John Muir High School (Pasadena), was appointed to the Military Academy at West Point by Congressman Adam Schiff this weekend. Kooshian will be in the West Point Class of 2012.

Temps of 100 degrees are predicted for today, and the fire above Sierra Madre is still raging. News reports say that it’s 5 percent contained, and full containment may not be for 2-3 days.
It’s a tinderbox out there, so be careful!

The city of Sierra Madre website reports that the city council has declared a state of emergency. They are requesting that everyone keep off the streets to keep them clear for fire and police vehicles. All public and private schools are closed tomorrow due to the fire. About 1,000 people in Sierra Madre have had to leave their homes.

As we sit, it’s almost dawn and you can hear the helicopters flying over Altadena on their way to fight the Santa Anita fire. TV news reports that firefighters have lost ground overnight, and containment isn’t expected until Wednesday or Thursday.
Sierra Madre schools, both public and private, are closed for the day. Reports from the field say that Sierra Madre police are trying to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicle traffic,

Altadenablog’s old stomping grounds, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, says that there is an unhealthful level of particulate pollution (or PM10) for sensitive groups, and special precautions should be taken. Here’s a link to fact sheets about particle pollution caused by fires and what you can do about it.

Pasadena City Council District 1 rep Jacque Robinson is holding a May 8 meeting for her district — at the Odyssey Charter School Auditorium at 725 W. Altadena Drive. In Altadena. Not Pasadena.
We were alerted to this by the West Coast Grrlie, who is appropriately snarky about it.

PSN front-pages last week’s decision by Judge Joseph De Vanon that the La Vina Homeowner’s Association must open up the trails around the development, as was agreed to when La Vina was originally approved. La Vina owns 180 acres of open space around the development that was popular with hikers and horsepeople. In 2004, they posted "No Trespassing"

Last night, the Altadena Library District hosted a kickoff for its long-term planning efforts, to determine needs, programming, and library renovations needed to serve the community.
(Full disclosure: the Altadenablogmaster is on the LIbrary’s strategic advisory planning committee, probably because he’s been doing so much public bitching about access.)
One of the impetuses for the plan is that the main library must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA),

The Meadows neighborhood blog reports that a hiker found two ropes dangling suspiciously from a high voltage transmission line at the top of Risinghill Road. Investigation by SoCalEdison linemen found the following:
The linemen removed the object, which turned out to be a bolt cutter, jury-rigged to be activated by pulling on the pair of ropes simultaneously.

Rachel Cota of Altadena, captain of Notre Dame University’s fencing team, was selected for the Ray Siegfried Award for Leadership Excellence. MonteCedro, the Episcopal Homes’ new development on the site of the old Scripps Home, will on the agenda at the Altadena Town Council Land Use Committee meeting tomorrow (7 PM at the community center). This may be a hot meeting, as moving the population to Alhambra and destroying the old home to build a massive new facility are meeting with more than its fair share of local controversy.
