LOS ANGELES COUNTY – To improve public safety and the flow of traffic for the community of Altadena, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved an amendment to the Altadena Community Standards District restricting commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds or more on any highway or alley in Altadena,

Gail Murphy, one of many Altadena backyard farmers, will be selling blackberries from her garden this Sunday, 10 AM-2 PM, on Santa Anita Ave. just north of Altadena Drive (there will be signs!). She promises other local garden produce growers will bring their wares as well. This is the first formal sale of the COFEAltadena Yahoo group of local produce growers.

- Commercial vehicles: a recurring problem with large trucks parked on city streets (the folks on Loma Alta/Sunset Ridge are particuarly perturbed), and complaining of lack of interest from the sheriff's department. In light of the announcement from Supv. Antonovich's office, we'll see if any action's forthcoming.
- Getting out the word: discussion on President Streets about putting a neighborhood message board of some sort on the dirt strip along Altadena Drive between Berendo and Glen Canyon.

Ex-con Donald Williams, 55, was arrested at his North Fair Oaks home Wednesday in possession of more than 60 guns, sheriffs say. Williams was convicted in 1994 of assault with a deadly weapon, and naturally he's not supposed to HAVE deadly weapons anymore. PSN has the sketchy details.

A House subcommittee has passed a recommendation for funding several planetary space exploration programs, including JPL's Mars exploration programs:
"We were able to obtain $75 million more than the President requested in the budget, and this will help keep the Mars scientific laboratory on schedule and, I hope, give the pathway to launch the next Mars vehicle in 2013,"

In the interests of being complete, here's some coverage on a protest against our neighbor, State Sen. Jack Scott, who recently sponsored a bill to curtail the use of mylar balloons. Posting to the local newsgroups: an opportunistic hot burglary (i.e. with people in the house) at the corner of Highview and Harriet at 4 PM on May 8. The perp came through an unlocked front door and grabbed what they could — a jar of change, an empty purse, and a laptop on the dining room table.

Rhythms of the Village, the charter school that closed its doors last month, leaving students in a lurch and staff unpaid, also left behind bills of $15,000 to the PUSD, PSN reports. The district is looking for student records as well to determine credits earned and grade placement for the former students. Muir, Blair, and Pasadena High Independent Study have accepted some of the students.

Now that the real estate bubble is bursting, the fraud schemes are coming out. For example: Jeanetta M. Standefor, 40, of Altadena, through a Pasadena company called Accelerated Funding Group, allegedly ran a Ponzi scheme in 2005-2007 that promised returns of up to 50% within four to six weeks. The LA Times says more than 600 people invested $18 million in the scheme,

One vehicle vs. some parked cars on the 1800 block of N. Altadena Dr. at about 10:30 this morning. According to officers on the scene, there was one person who was not seriously injured.

Former White House Counsel John Dean will speak on Monday June 9 at 7:30 PM at the main branch of the Altadena Library, 600 East Mariposa St., Altadena. Jeanetta M. Standefor, 40, of Altadena pleaded not guilty in federal court this week, says PSN. Standefor and her company, Accelerated Funding Group, are accused of bilking investors out of millions of dollars in a real estate investment Ponzi scheme. She’s out on bail with a new ankle bracelet courtesty of the feds.

Kenny Patton of Altadena just signed as cornerback with the NY (or is it NJ?) Jets, says scout.com:
Patton, (5-11, 193, Hawai’i/Altadena, CA) was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Oakland Raiders on May 4, 2007 before being released May 15, 2007. At Hawai’i, Patton was a four-year starter at cornerback, totaling 139 tackles and three interceptions in 42 games.
