New week, fresh start.
We’ve spent the holiday weekend in the bosom of the family and, except for putting out some brush fires (and you know what they are) we haven’t been online enough to do regular news updates. That means there’s lots to do, so expect updates throughout the day.

This post condenses a lot of what’s been going on in the comments all weekend. Many of you don’t read the comments, and lately we can’t blame you. But because we believe in being open and up front in our processes, we’re taking some time on the main page to explain what’s going on.
We’ve studied and been inspired by Benedictine spirituality. Benedictines are famous for their hospitality.

We decided we needed some umbrella name for this kerfluffle that involve certain town councilmen, the sheriff’s department, the Altadena Sheriff’s Support Group, the Chamber Citizens of the Year, and now the Pederast Hilton, etc. and has caught Altadenablog in its toxic spray. Since the precipitating event is the (unproven) accusation that the deputies are stopping people who shouldn’t be stopped, we’ve decided to call it Roustgate.

The Sheriff’s Support Group “Concerts in the Park” series at Farnsworth Park continues this Saturday at 7 PM with The American Flyers:
The American Flyers came to be in the early 1990’s, born of players who had formed strong friendships in a number of different bands in the 1980’s. The Flyers have gone through numerous versions since that time with all members maintaining a strong fraternal bond with one another.

Gotten from several sources: a jogger was accosted Sunday by a dark-haired, bearded man wearing a tank top who began swearing at her and gave chase. She got away and called the sheriff’s station, who sent a patrol out but found nothing. Unknown if the guy lives in the neighborhood. Be wary and cautious when you’re out.

We are spending today working on a video project (!) for A-blog, so there may not be updates until late. In addition, we’re slogging thru a whole bunch of paper re: the La Vina decision for an upcoming post. And Typepad, our provider, is making “improvements,” which usually means “slowdowns” (for example, we can’t get into the comments section today —

LA Times' Julie Sheer has a piece about the work that is being done — or not being done — on the three-year-old slide on the Mt. Wilson Toll Road. Work will start this fall. Maybe.

Steven Cisar of Altadena crashed at the BMX Olympic trials today, dashing his hopes for a trip to Beijing. His training partner and roomate, Mike Day, did manage to land a berth on the US team LA Times has the story.

The Elliot Caine Quintet opened up the Altadena Sheriff’s Station Summer Concert in the Park series tonight at the amphitheater in Farnsworth Park. After some opening remarks by Sheriff Support Group president Bob Klomburg and Capt. Roosevelt Blow, the night was filled with the sounds of cool and Latin jazz.

bookofjoe, we just learned of this business that sells rare books on DVD and CD, which got its genesis from the David A. Lawyer Bookstore in Altadena:
BookFlow.com began as a traditional upscale bookstore in New York. It was founded in 1899 by Grover C. Lawyer and Wellington J. Lawyer, with the help of their father, David C. Lawyer, a successful businessman.
Many of the books from that store were eventually passed down to Grover’s son,

Gail Murphy and friend and fellow gardener Kathryn Toth share a laugh at the first “official” COFEAltadena Yahoo group fruit sale this afternoon, on Santa Anita north of Altadena Drive. The Yahoo discussion group, formed of Altadena and Pasadena gardenic overachievers, will be offering their wares to the public throughout the growing season.

The West Altadena Community Development Project (boundaries above) is looking for residents, business owners, and others to serve on the Project Area Committee.
According to a release from Los Angeles County:
The Project Area Committee (PAC) is a citizen’s advisory group of residential tenants, residential owner-occupants, business owners, and representatives of community organizations who reside within, owna business within the redevelopment proejct area, or represent a community organization serving the area.

Laura Graham, who is managing Saturday's town council election, writes Altadenablog that she's still short of help for the big day. The town council is looking for "wranglers" (her word) to oversee the polls' setup and breakdown, and counters for the ballot count at the end of the day. In addition, she can use people to staff a four hour shift at the polling locations.

Laura Graham (who is in charge of Saturday's election) tells us that:
- They still need people to cover four hour shifts (midday and evening), and might need more staffing at Farnsworth Park due to the Juneteenth festival.
- Also, counters are needed from 6-8 PM, and some healthy backs to dismantle the polling stations (teenagers and young adults are welcome) and it may take an hour or two of time.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY — Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich has appointed Ms. Barbara Yvonne Bigby to the Los Angeles County Sybil Brand Commission for Institutional Inspections.
A resident of Altadena, Ms. Bigby was the past owner and operator of the Bright-Eye Day Care Center for over 30 years.

Story #1: The Altadena Town Council spent a considerable time at last night's meeting discussing potential ethical conflicts: particularly, some councilmembers have contracts with Pasadena Unified School District. Most pointedly: councilmember Keith "Sarge" Gibbs, who is chair of the council's Education Committee and runs training, intervention, and leadership programs at Blair. Chairman George Lewis said that there had been numerous complaints about Gibbs requesting money for his programs.

Once again, Supv. Antonovich's office is sponsoring the Summer Beach Bus from Altadena to Santa Monica and back again, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Labor Day, starting this Fri., June 20.
Fare is $3, or $1.50 for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Anybody boarding the bus under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Altadenablog's ex-brother-in-law was an ultramarathoner — a 26-mile marathon was only a warmup to this guy. Once when he came to visit, his idea of a good day spent was running up to the peak of Mt. Wilson and back. We absolutely don't understand this behavior — and ultimately neither did our sister-in-law.

The Chaney Trail gate, which is normally closed +/- 10 o'clock at night, will close at 5 PM on July 2-6, according to Sgt. Yolanda Palomo of the Altadena sheriff's station (fireworks — drunks and boneheads — dry forest — not a good mix). The normal closure time will resume Monday, July 7.

Don't forget — tomorrow, Saturday, June 21, is the Altadena Town Council election. All you need to do is go to one of the many convenient polling places to cast your ballot sometime between 8 AM and 6 PM.

Altadena Town Councilman Keith “Sarge” Gibbs gave Altadenablog an exclusive interview Thursday, answering the criticisms against him at the most recent Town Council meeting.
Council chair George Lewis said at Tuesday night’s meeting that he would appoint a committee to look at council ethics after it was brought to the council’s attention that some of its members are contractors with Pasadena Unified School District, and that could be construed as a conflict of interest. Gibbs particularly was singled out, as he teaches “boot camp”-type courses at Blair IB High School,

PSN has a sketchy about a shooting on the 2200 block of Glenrose Wednesday night at about 8:45 — six rounds were fired at a young man who was hit on the heel. PSN's Larry Wilson reminds us that the Armory Center for the Arts' exhibition, "Jirayr Zorthian/Richard Feynman, A Conversation in Art," opens next week.
Besides being a rare exhibition of Zorthian's work and an even rarer exhibition of Nobel Prize winner Feynman's art, there's another artist on display: retired JPL'er and Altadenan Richard Davies, who will present six paintings of freewheeling galaxies in space.

FIREWORKS
It is against the law to set off fireworks in any unincorporated Los
Angeles County area, this includes Altadena.
Safe & Sane fireworks are not illegal to possess. They are however only
legal to discharge in a city that sells them.
