About 50 bloggers, fans, and hangers-on came to the San Gabriel Valley Blogger's Potluck, "Primavera in Altadena," at Farnsworth Park. It was great re-connecting, meeting new friends, and tackling that groaning board of food!

Christ the Shepherd Lutheran Church, 185 West Altadena Drive (corner of Altadena Drive and Glenrose) is holding a free E-waste recycling event on April 25th from 9-4. Drive in and drop off!
Proceeds will help support the church’s work with community organizations that help the poor and homeless, such as the Altadena Food Pantry and the Bad Weather Shelter,

March 8: $30,000 damage in an arson fire of a vehicle at Glenrose Ave. and Las Flores St.
March 12: 3400 block N. Fair Oaks, two male adults disguised as law enforcement officers entered the victim’s home, bound him, and stole several items.

The Altadena Christian Children's Center will host its annual benefit May 1, with the theme "Jazz Royale."
ACCC, a nationally recognized child care center in Altadena, is awarding Peggy Sisson of Pasadena with the 2009 “Community Partnership Award” at its annual IT TAKES A COMMUNITY benefit. Ms. Sisson will be honored for her distinguished accomplishments as a community leader and role model to youth in Pasadena and Los Angeles County.

La Canada Valley Sun online has the story on Wednesday's fatal accident in our neighboring city: an out-of-control car transport big rig came off the Angeles Crest Highway, running over an occupied vehicle in the intersection and crashing to a stop at the Flintridge Book store. Hal Lee Moore, 54, of Altadena, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison Thursday. Moore was found guilty of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, and other charges last February. Moore ran a red light at Hill and Washington on Nov. 29, 2006, causing a crash that killed Bertha Vasquez Arias,

MHPevents (Inger Miller and Jill Hawkins), Altadena event planners, were finalists in the 2009 Catersource/Eventsolutions conference in Las Vegas. They won an industry award in the "Best BBQ or PIcnic" caategory for turning the Gerrish Swim and Tennis Club into a "Concrete Clambake." Their note on the event says:

Images of Dignity: The Drawings of Charles White by Benjamin Horowitz is reviewed
in this article in the Langston University Gazette. White, who spent his last years in Altadena (there’s a park named after him!) had a significant art career, coming out of WPA mural work and drawings of African American life.

LA Times is on the case about George Garner, a noted black singer and theater actor in the 1930’s from the Pasadena/Altadena area. He accomplished many important things, but what happened to him is unknown — and the Times is looking for someone who knows. There is an Altadena chapter of the
National Association of Negro Musicians named after him.

The Altadena Library, 600 E. Mariposa, is holding another Fun Flick Friday, March 13 with "Madagascar Escape 2 Africa" (Rated PG),
This sequel brings back lovable New York Zoo Animals, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo. Still stranded in Madagascar, they manage to leave the island only to land in the wilderness of Africa.

One of our favorite causes,
Club 21, a resource center for people with Down Syndrome and their families, will have a grand opening Sat., March 21, 10 AM-12 PM, on the grounds of Pasadena Covenant Church, 539 N. Lake, Pasadena. (Parking is at Westminster Presbyterian Church on the Altadena border, and there will be a shuttle down the hill).

Pasadena Sub Rosa prints a series of email correspondence from a disabled resident to MTA re: getting a bus to come to Lake north of Altadena Drive. The answer: nope — no sidewalks, deep drains, steep slope. This is a real issue, essentially leaving disabled, elderly, and nondriving residents trapped in the area unless they can negotiate their way down Lake on foot.
