The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department recognized 32 deputies and reserve officers on Tuesday with the department’s Lifesaving Award.
The Lifesaving Award is given to “employees or reserve members of the Deepartment whose actions result in the saving or preservation of a human life that otherwise would have been lost without the employee’s direct involvement,” according to a sheriff’s department press release.

The community is invited as the newest two shops on Lake Avenue will have a grand opening event Saturday afternoon.
Rhythms of the Village, 2279 N. Lake Avenue, and Angel Moments Spiritual Resource Center, 2285 N. Lake Avenue, will have a celebratory opening from noon to 6 PM Saturday, July 27.

Uber-volunteer Deb Halberstadt shares these pictures of Saturday’s training for Teen CERT members at the Davies Building in Farnsworth Park. Community Emergency Response Team members are offering training Juy 20 and 27 for teens who are interested in developing the skills to respond to a crisis. Loma Alta Park’s “Parks After Dark” program continues tonight through Saturday from 5-9 PM, with an added twist tonight: food trucks!

The county department of public health and the U.S. Forest Service have closed three loops of the Table Mountain Campgrounds in the Angeles National Forest after finding a ground squirrel with plague.
The Broken Blade, Twisted Arrow, and Pima Loops, near Wrightwood will be closed for at least a week,

The Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy is looking for volunteers for “Rubio Restoration Day” on Sunday, Aug. 4.
The Conservancy recently acquired significant property in Rubio Canyon, and offers an opportunity to help restore the area and learn more about plants, both native and invasive.

Altadena Town Council chair Bernardean Broadous has sent out an email notice announcing that the council will consider applications for the vacancy in Census Tract 4603.02.
No one ran for the open council seat in last month’s elections.
Resident Ron Adams had submitted an application for the seat after the election and was to be appointed at the July town council meeting,

A 17-year-old male hiker was airlifted out of Eaton Canyon Saturday afternoon after suffering head trauma at the end of a 30 foot fall near the first waterfall.
The Altadena Sheriff’s Station reports that the call came in about 3 PM about the injured hiker.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Station is hosting Natiional Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Loma Alta Park, 3330 North Lincoln Avenue.
Activities include a bounce house, “dunk-a-cop,” along with booths from the deputies, Neighborhood Watch, and Altadena CERT. Bring a potluck dish, dessert, or drink to share at this annual gathering, where the deputies will provide hot dogs and hamburgers.

We’ve had several reports of a brown bear cub on Echo Mountain Trail — nobody’s spotted the mom yet, but she’s probably close. It’s a good idea if you’re hiking anywhere in the area to be aware of the bear and make some noise when you’re hiking (‘bear bells” are recommended)

We’re enough of a flag-waving patriot that we celebrate the founding of what is still the greatest nation in the world, the “last best hope of earth” in Lincoln’s phrase, the nation that drew our families from Scotland, Ireland, England, Canada, and Germany (after a pass through Russia).

Altadena’s longest (if not oldest) Fourth of July neighborhood parade runs along Pepper Drive, where more people are marching than cheering on. And that’s OK, because everyone meets at the end for cookies, brownies, and some good old American lemonade. It’s always a cavalcade of costumes and vehicles, and we captured a few after the jump.

The Friends of the Altadena Library’s summer reading program presents Kyle Tiernan in “The Magic of Drawing” on Tuesday, July 9.
In this fun and interactive program, children ages 5-10 will illustrate three refrigerator-ready drawings during this one-of-a-king, draw-along program.
The program starts at 2 PM at the Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa St. , and 4 PM at the Bob Lucas Branch Library,

July 4 in Altadena was a busy day for the Altadena Sheriff’s station.
According to a report to the Community Advisory Committee from Capt. John S. Benedict, in the 24 hours of July 4, there were 29 calls for fireworks, compared to 48 calls in 2012. Benedict said that deputies “took appropriate action by warnind and advising and/or citing.”
Benedict elaborated: “I’m hoping our efforts to educate the community paid off.

We’ve had several people comment on a wandering greyhound-like dog (pictured) who was seen Saturday on Sonoma Drive between Mar Vista and Holliston and environs. Looks healthy but acts skittish and will not come to anybody. If he’s yours, here’s a good place to start looking.
Also: found an adult grey cat in the Braeburn/La Solana/Carroll Drive area, appears to be female, no identifable markings,

The Down Beat Express kicked off the Sheriff Support Group Summer Concert Series with verve as they played big band numbers from the 1930’s-1960’s in the Farnsworth Park Amphitheater Saturday night.
A larger-than-normal crowd for the first concert enjoyed the band and vocalist Jennifer Gates as they brought back the American classic songbook, even if just for a night. The theme of the concert was “Dance-Dance-Dance,”

Approximately 130 dogs that were rescued from a hoarder several weeks ago are now looking for rescue again.
The dogs were seized by San Bernardino Animal Control officials on June 18 from Rainbow’s End Animal Sanctuary. According to news reports, the dogs have been living for years in one large pack without human interaction or proper food and medical care.

The Altadena Historical Society’s quarterly meeting and program on Monday, July 22, will slide into the past.
Leon Ricks, “The Mayor of Maiden Lane” (1928-2013) was an accomplished photographer who documented four decades in the life of Altadena. The Historical Society recently received a gift of over 1,000 slides from his collection. This month’s program will look at 100 of them, giving insight into Altadena’s past.

District vector ecologists confirmed that three dead crows collected last week from the cities of Arcadia and Covina tested positive for West Nile virus (WNv). So far this year, the District has confirmed a total of four WNv infected birds; three from the city of Arcadia and one from the city of Covina.
Birds are natural hosts for WNv and are routinely monitored to indicate whether the virus is active in the San Gabriel Valley.

Right next door to the sheriff’s station, the Altadena Community Center will hold a birthday party from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday, July 14. It has been ten years since the ribbon was cut on our “town hall” – a facility that is unique in unincorporated Los Angeles County.

Altadena sheriff’s deputies arrested a local man on July 4 suspected of kidnapping and assulting his girfriend in San Gabriel.
According to a press release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the 20-year-old man arrived at the woman’s home to speak about their daughter. According to the release, the conversation became heated and he forced her into his vehicle.
