Los Angeles county is offering a webinar to inform that they have an opportunity to hire temporary workers through a stimulus program administered thru LA County.
The Transitonal Subsidized Employment program (TSE) was developed for participants who remain unemployed or underemployed after receiving services and job search assistance. The goal is to provide participants with hands-on experience in a real work setting acquiring wages and new skills,

Per this article in PSN, Foothill Municipal Water District will hold an open house on March 15 (altho' the story doesn't say where — we're looking into it) to meet the public on its proposed $4/month parcel tax for its customers, which include 30,000 households in Altadena (Foothill is the middleman between the Metropolitan Water District and the local water districts).

Lieutenant Sanchez indicated there were multiple calls to the [Altadena Sheriff's] Station reporting a large gathering of gang members and that about ten were fighting.
All of the people standing around outside the store were detained at gunpoint.
Ultimately no arrests were made.

… not in our neighborhood, but we were alerted by other folks around town that there was a brownout in some parts of town early this morning that was resolved about 9:30 AM. Edison said "an animal has come in contact with our equipment." No clue on what the animal was, tho!

PSN looks at the latest Aveson news: after PUSD rejected the charter school's plans to keep upper division classes at their Noyes location (because the neighbors sued), it offered Aveson a floor of its own at John Muir, which Aveson in turn rejected. Grades K-5 will remain at Noyes next year, but where the middle and high schoolers will wind up is anybody's guess.

Thanks to some readers who tipped us off, there is a wide-ranging power outage in Altadena right now (approx. 2 PM). A 1 PM notice from Edison blames an equipment problem, but doesn't give an ETA on when it'll be fixed.
UPDATE: Ended around 3 PM, but Edison says it affected 4800 customers.

Per the
Altadena Mountain Rescue page, a couple of inexperienced hikers were trapped in a steep ravine on Sunday afternoon, necessitating the sheriff's Air 5 bird swooping in. Donald Taylor, 46, and Yumiko Okuho, 38, were not lost or injured, but they couldn't get out of the ravine near Echo Mountain.

1. Not on the agenda but an issue that has come up is the removal of the Post Office Mail Boxes in Altadena. I have had many complaints, particularly by senior residents, that the only safe and practical way to post mail is to drive to the Post Office.

At tonight's Altadena Town Council meeting, Sheriff Lt. Steven McLean was announced as Altadena Sheriff Station's new leader by departing Capt. Roosevelt Blow.
According to a sheriff's department bio, Lt. McLean has served 30 years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. His law enforcement career includes stints as training lieutenant,

Highlights of last night’s Altadena Town Council meeting:
- Changeups: La Vina resident Doug Colliflower was named to the town council seat 4603.01, vacated by Dennis Bridwell last month. Colliflower runs DC Golf, which operates the Altadena and Eaton Canyon golf courses. In a shifting of responsibilities, Ruth Nielan was named vice-chair, and Jamie Bissner corresponding secretary.
- Post office drop boxes: Chairman Gino Sund said he is soliciting comments from residents about the removal of blue post office drop boxes from around town.

Sheriff's got a call of a burglary in the neighborhood around Allen and New York at about noon today, so that's what the chopper's hovering around looking for. Scanner reports suspect is a male with red hair, but no other details.

This sounds like fun — we use an Altoids tin as a case for our iPod Nano (true story!)
On Thurs., Feb. 25 @ 4:30pm, in the Altadena Library Community Room, 600 E. Mariposa, teens and tweens can recycle/reuse an empty Altoids tin and create handy-dandy little travel candle for fun and function. Come on down to the Altadena Library and participate in this great “green” program!

There was a lost Rottweiler roaming around Florecita Farms on Wednesday around 3 PM. Scarred myself and thinking of the nearby Odyssey School, I called the Pasadena Humane Society to pick it up. It looked like it is injured and is a older male. If someone is missing a all black Rottweiler of that description. It is at the Pasadena Humane Society, they will assess it for ten days. It looked like it had been out on the street for a while and it does not have a micro-chip.

Well, they're wasting no time with the improvements to the Altadena Sheriff's Station. Sgt. Marsha Williams sends us this:
Along with other proposed improvements to Altadena Sheriff’s Station, the front neon sign will be undergoing renovations. On Friday February 19, 2010, between 7-11 AM, the sign will be removed and renovated during the week. The front door and lobby of the station will be inaccessible for approximately one hour during this time period.

Cameron Turner, a rising journalist and social commentator, will be the keynote speaker at the 25th annual Black History Celebration sponsored by Altadena Baptist Church, on Sunday, February 21, beginning at 5 PM.
Turner is a native of Pasadena, where he attended public schools before earning a Bachelors Degree in Communications at Stanford University. His column “Turner’s Two Cents,” is published regularly in The Pasadena Journal. He also contributes to two web sites,

Congressman Adam Schiff will host a panel discussion about the crisis in Haiti and efforts underway to rebuild the country on Feb. 28 at the Altadena Library Community Room, 600 E. Mariposa, from 5-7 PM.
