An oldie-but-still-a-baddie scam is making the local rounds, according to the Pasadena Police Department, which sent this message:
One of the latest trends Pasadena and the surrounding communities have been experiencing lately is called the “Grandparent’s Scam” also known as the “Emergency scam.”
In the typical scenario, a grandparent receives a phone call from a scammer claiming to be one of his or her grandchildren.

The LACMA9 Art+ Film Lab is a program of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art that is traveling to nine locations to provide free film workshops, oral history, outdoor film screenings, and other activities.

The Fall Festival of the First Presbyterian Church, Altadena celebrates the church’s 100th year anniversary on Saturday, September 14 by presenting a photo review of its history and by hosting a performance of the play “One Way or Another– Overcoming the Odds One Base at a Time”.
The play centers on the friendship of Shig Takayama (a former church member) and Jackie Robinson as they together pushed up against the “whites only” barrier on the athletic field in 1937.

Altadenan Nancy Stiles has been appointed as executive director of Pasadena’s Lake Avenue Community Foundation, effective Oct. 1, 2013.
Stiles is a graduate of UCSD and UCLA, a former middle-school math teacher and an adjunct math professor at Glendale and Pasadena community colleges. She has been associated with LACF since 2005 as a volunteer. In 2009 she was hired as a mentor coach and in 2011 became manager of the mentor program.

Shed a tear, please, as the last Fancy Food Truck Friday until spring heads its way into Altadena this coming Friday, Sept. 13.

Noel is a blackish tortoiseshell older female cat, last seen in their front yard at Calavaras/Midwick and Allen Avenue. Has a distinctive throaty meow and only four teeth left.

Southern California Edison (SCE) is advising customers to be aware of a telephone scam that demands immediate payment for allegedly past due electricity bills.
Imposters have been calling SCE customers telling them they must make immediate payment on past due bills or have their electric service disconnected. The callers are also demanding that payment be made through a prepaid cash card.

These are the facts: The US Forest Service maintains a safe, easy trail from the Eaton Canyon Nature Center to the bottom of the first waterfall. The Forest Service has not built and does not recognize any other trails to the falls or up the side of the falls.

Altadena town councilmembers Judy Mathews and Damon L. Hobdy, representing census tract 4603.01, plan to hold a get-together with their constituents in September — but they’re looking for input to plan the date.

Lisa Robin Kelly, 43, best-known for her role in "That 70's Show," died in an Altadena rehab facility Wednesday night.
According to Breaking News Wire, Kelly had checked into the rehab facility Pax House in Altadena earlier this week.
A resident on the 200 block of Wapello Street told Altadenablog that sheriff's cars and the coroner's van were in the neighborhood a good part of the day.

The next meeting of the Altadena Town Council will be Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Altadena Community Center, 730 E. Altadena Drive, starting at 7 PM.
Major items of business seem to be choosing a new group of executive officers for the term and appointing Ron Adams to the vacant seat at CT 4603.02. That was pretty lively last month, who knows what’ll happen this month?

Walmart Neighborhood Market, which opened in March, has posted a notice that is is applying to sell alcoholic beverages at the store.
The notice says that Walmart has applied for a “premises to premises transfer,” which means transferring an existing liquor license from another location, rather than creating a new license.
In public meetings, Walmart representatives have said that a liquor license was always in the planning,

Susanna Dadd and James Griffith’s Folly Bowl (their backyard garden amphitheatre) will have an evening of movies and music outdoors Saturday night, Aug. 24, starting at 7:30 PM.

Despite last month’s conflict over leadership — at the council meeting, between each other, and online — the Altadena Town Council approved the slate of officers presented in July, with Bernardean Broadous handing over the chair’s gavel to Diane Marcussen Tuesday night.
The council arranged to approve the slate by assent, with no actual vote, public or secret, being taken.

The Altadena Town Council rejected a conditional use permit for an Indian restaurant and banquet hall Tuesday night, following a lengthy hearing that included 44 people speaking against it, according to one tally.
The council followed the Land Use Committee’s recommendation and turned down the permit, saying that owner Nirmal Kumar was conducting a bait-and-switch, agreeing to abide by certain conditions while also changing the intended use of the property.

The next meeting of the Altadena Coalition of Neighborhood Associations (ACONA) will be Sept. 24 at the Altadena Main Library, 600 E. Mariposa Street, from 7-8:30 PM.
Speakers will be Diane Marcussen, the new chair of the Altadena Town Council, and Kim Kenne, Pasadena Unified School District [PUSD] Board Member for District 1 in west Altadena.
ACONA members have long asked that the town council be more open and to responsive to issues they have in an interactive setting.
