Wildfire-Affected Homeowners in Unincorporated Altadena and Pasadena Have Until November 25 to Apply for Lead Soil Cleanup Grants

The county’s New Roots Eaton Canyon Pilot Program offers up to $60,000 per approved application, with applications due at noon

Homeowners impacted by the Eaton Canyon wildfire whose primary residence is in unincorporated Altadena or Pasadena have until noon Wednesday, November 25, to apply to the New Roots Eaton Canyon Pilot Program, which provides grant funds to remediate lead contamination in exterior areas with bare soil.

A total of $1 million has been allocated for testing, soil remediation and program administration, and the program is expected to remediate about 20 properties. Each approved application may not exceed $60,000. Applications opened October 21.

Applicants are prioritized in this order: households with a pregnant household member; households with children under 6; households with children under 6 who regularly visit the home; households with a member with elevated lead levels in their blood; households with children 6 through 17; and households with an elderly person or a person with disabilities.

The program is open only to owner-occupied properties within specific ZIP codes, which homeowners can check with the program’s online eligibility tool, and applicants must certify that the property has been their primary residence since January 7, 2025. Multifamily and commercial properties, vacant lots, homes that are uninhabitable or not used as a primary residence, properties outside the eligible area, and condominiums or townhomes where the land is owned by an association are not eligible. Renters cannot apply at this time.

Applicants need a valid government-issued photo ID, a utility bill issued within 60 days of applying and their most recent property tax notice or recorded deed. Applicants have five business days to supply any missing information.

The Los Angeles County Development Authority’s New Roots office is at 700 W. Main St. in Alhambra and can be reached at newroots@lacda.org.

New Roots Eaton Canyon Pilot Program application deadline will run on Wednesday, November 25 at noon. Online application. For more information, call (626) 586-1727 or visit https://newroots.lacda.org/.
