Before a Major Renovation, Altadena Library Offers Tweens a Quiet Space to Create

With a massive renovation project looming for early 2026, the Altadena Main Library is focusing this week on a smaller, more intricate kind of construction: friendship bracelets.

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the library will host a “Gift Making Workshop” specifically designed for children ages eight to 12. The event, scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Main Library Community Room, invites participants to “make a bag charm or a friendship bracelet for a friend or family member (or just for yourself),” according to the program description.

The workshop highlights the library’s continued role as a community hub for youth—categorized as “Tweens”—even as the district prepares for significant physical changes. The Main Library, a 25,000-square-foot facility built in 1967, is scheduled to “close for renovation in early 2026,” a project with an estimated budget between $5 million and $15 million, according to bid documents.

Wednesday’s free event offers a moment of creative calm before the busy holiday season. While registration isn’t explicitly required, the library notes that “Supplies are Limited.” The session is part of a broader December calendar ensuring younger patrons remain engaged before library closures for the upcoming holidays.

Gift Making Workshop will run on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m. Main Library Community Room, 600 E. Mariposa St., Altadena. For more information, call (626) 798-0833 or visit https://www.altadenalibrary.org/programs?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D192362185.
